The morning was cool, and a draft swished by a large tree. This tree was odd - short, with a thick trunk. An odd tree with a basin in the branches where a cluster of cubs could sleep, which they often did.
To the mother of many, it was safer for the cubs to be above ground with dangerous creatures wandering about at night, digging in ground-dens for creatures to eat. It was the best possible option, she thought.
The tan lioness gave a small smile, looking at the tree with wonder. It was home - it was a wonderful one with all the little cubs running about. She hoped they loved her as much as she loved them. She loved all of them - products of her mate. They were all lovely.
They were her children without being from her body, but that did mean anything to her at all. Even if some of them did hate her - which in fact made her heart clench with unbearable pain - she still loved them.

Kira missed her papa when he was gone. He was gone a lot, she thought to herself, but she wasn't sure why. It made her a bit grumpy when he left, though she'd never strike out at anyone in her irritation. No, instead, she'd merely have to find something else to occupy her time. She didn't much like playing with her siblings. It was too busy, too many, and they didn't understand that sometimes she wanted to be alone. Kira moved away from the tree and the ruckus of her brothers and sisters tromping about, and decided to move towards Mama Nafsi. Mama Nafsi was such a pretty lioness with such pretty green eyes, and she was so nice and kind. Kira didn't mind spending time with Mama Nafsi. Flopping down in front of the lioness, Kira gazed up at her with bright orange eyes. "Hi."

The green-eyes lioness looked down at the pretty little girl that lay before her now. "Hello, little one," she said with a smile. The grassy eyes seemed to curve with the smile, and Nafsi was happy.
She gave the small girl a nuzzle. "What's on your mind, Sweetie?" She asked. Normally, he cubs would be off playing or doing there own thing until they passed of from exhaustion and slept until the sun was shining again.

Kira purred softly at Nafsi, enjoying the attention. It was nice, whenever she felt like she hadn't gotten enough attention, Nafsi always seemed there for a hug or a nuzzle. It was great, and mama Nafsi always seemed to know what to do.
Still, Kira was troubled.
"Why is papa gone all the time, mama Nafsi? I miss him sometimes."

"I don't know, Love," she told the cub regretfully. "I wish I knew, little one, but he just leaves. He's always left, since before you were born, Sweetie." she gave her daughter another nuzzle.
"I miss him too," she gave a small sigh. "He'll come back, though, and one day he'll stay," she said hopefully. It's all she could do after all.

Kira sighed softly, looking out at the siblings that played tirelessly with one another. They were so overwhelming to her, endlessly wrestling and full of boundless energy. None of them ever wanted to collect pebbles, or flowers, or shiny beetles. It felt like she was all alone sometimes, despite the fact that she had many, many siblings.
"Doesn't he like our home, mama Nafsi? Doesn't he love us?"
Kira pouted. Of course papa had to love her, Kira had done nothing wrong, had she? She didn't think she did.

"Kira-love, he does love us, so much," She assured, gently, trying to believe her words herself. "He wouldn't come back if he didn't love us, little one." She gave a smile to the young leotah.
"And he'll come back to us soon. Don't you worry about that, little one." Nafsi knew it was hard on all of the cubs when their father left. It was hard on her too, and she hoped her mate still loved her as much as she did him. She knew he would be back.
But that didn't make the wait and and the eventual departure any less difficult.

Kira tried to understand why papa kept leaving. It made her sad, and Kira didn't like feeling sad. She decided to just believe mama Nafsi. The lioness would never lie to anyone, so why shouldn't Kira believe her?
"Maybe he'll stay this time." She whispered to Nafsi, hope clinging to each word. It was hard to get any alone time with papa. He had so many children that needed looking after, and so when he was home it seemed as if everyone wanted to be around papa. While this was understandable, Kira craved attention from Mauja.
"I miss him."

"One can only hope," Nafsi told the little cub. She wished he would stay, too, with all her heart. Perhaps he would, but then he could leave again at any time. There was never a guarantee, but there was always the whispers that he would return, and that's all she could hope.
She didn't want to lie to the little girl, birthed from some unknown female's body, but hers by heart. "When he returns, I'll ask him for you," she told Kira with a smile, though sad.
She gave a small sight. "I miss him, too, Love."

Kira nodded, heartsick and tired of feeling this way. She didn't know how to get out of the slump she was in, and looked to Nafsi for guidance.
"What do you do when you miss papa and it makes you sad, mama Nafsi?" It seemed like a good idea to ask Nafsi; she was in charge, after all, when papa wasn't around.
As she waited for the answer, Kira rested her head against Nafsi's side, a soft sigh whispering past her lips.

Nafsi tried to his the sadness in her smile. "I do all I can, to remember everything about him. The color of his fur, that spark in his eye when he's up to something," Nafsi sighed. "And his scent." She shook her head a bit, heart aching.
"Knowing that he will come back helps the most," she said finally after a pause. She tried to control her sadness. She didn't want the young ones to see her cry, or to see her upset. She didn't want to upset the young ones with her inability to control her emotions.
