This pickled vegetable...

When preforming your craft, what methods do you employ to focus your Will?
And please, don't say "meditation". Give a real explanation.

I usually will assume the shizen no kamae (earth stance). Its doesn't look much like a fighting stance, standing upright with my arms at my sides and feet slightly apart, but it is the "default" posture for my style of martial arts and I find it is the one best suited to readying myself before any act of "magic".

I will assume the shizen stance with my eyes closed and turn my focus inwards to follow the flow of qui in my body. When I'm ready to consciously manipulate it I'll draw it out with me and focus it on my desired intent.

I always find that sitting with my legs crossed helps me to relax and calm down enough to concentrate on focusing.

I then go through some breathing exercises (I always have a bad cough so I do the breathing exercises to relax my throat so that I won't cough when I'm concentrating, it tends to break through the concentration).

Do you use any spoken word spells as well? I ask only because you mentioned your cough which would be very damaging to have in the middle of a spoken spell.

I have a tendency not to focus for most of my spells. The world simply does not have time for me. I do, however, find that a few deep breaths work wonders. I use pranayama for meditation, but not for spells really.

If I'm doing anything which requires the spoken word, I drink a lot of water first and do those breathing exercises. I then decide how I'm feeling, and if I think the cough might become an issue, I won't do the spell, because I don't want to risk it being damaged.

Since I believe that the will is the only thing that matters and all other tools/actions/words are crutches (however useful) I merely imagine my goal. It's been a long time since I have done any sort of full blown ritual or anything special though if what I need is too complex to imagine all at once I will speak a quite prayer to my dieity but that usually in a form of a sentence.
