Well, that was it. She had done it. After what seemed like an eternity, they finally had a safe haven. After her rites, Omolara let her fur dry completely as they toured and wandered through their new Pride lands. It had been a long, eventful day...but it was far from over. There was still one very important thing!

"Isn't this wonderful, Ur?" She keened out, a picture of happiness. "No more uncertainty, no more wandering...We're officially home!" Breathing out a heavy sigh of relief through her nostrils, she lifted her dark head to look over her shoulder, back at the beach that offered so many new opportunities. Her expression was soft; thankful for the chance to be a part of something.

"Well...just one more thing, and then it's official." Omolara said cheerfully to her son, leaning her head down with an affectionate purr to nuzzle into the soft tuft of fur on the top of his head. "Would you like to help me pick out a den?" The two-toned Lioness asked, playfully nudging her son in the shoulder, trying to make him stumble.

"Awww Mum!" Ur protested as she'd nuzzled him. "I'm not a cub anymore!" He ran a paw through his headfur as if she'd somehow mussed it, though in truth he was trying to fluff it up again. His tone lacked vehemance though. He was feeling too old and 'grown up' to be treated like a cubbie anymore, but truthfully savored his mother's affections. It was a token protest at best.

She was right of course. This was the best thing that had ever happened to the two of them. So long spent scavanging and hiding and running. For a lion his age, Ur had more wisdom of the savannah and muscle than was usually expected. He glanced at his mother thoughtfully. She was thin, though not dangerously so. Still, compared to the lionesses of their new pride, she looked skinny and underfed. Concern for her flooded him, sending a wash of relief through him. Here she could grow fat and sleek and beautiful again.

Thus lost in his thoughts, he was unprepared for her playful shove and did indeed go stumbling off to the side. His eyes lit with laughter and mischieviousness, though, and he launched himself at her, growling playfully as he leaped to attack her neck. It wasn't such a stretch as it had been not so long ago. He was growing in height, weight, and agility. He bared his young fangs and pretended to be fierce. "Yes, I will choose our sleeping place!" he announced grandly, then scooted away from her to avoid the expected swat of her larger paw.

"You can argue all you want, but you'll still be my cub forever" Omolara teased ominously, chuckling and allowing him to fix his little tuft. For now, she wouldn't try to mess it up again...for now. Her chuckle grew a little louder when he pounced her, playfully baring her own fangs, about to swat at him when he began to run off.

A sudden wave of worry crashed heavily into her, and the Lioness lept after her son, quickly catching up with him on instinct. She may have been thin and tired, but concern made her forget that with remarkable ease; and it wasn't until she caught up with him did she feel silly for being so panicked. They were safe here. It was remarkable how often she had to repeat that to herself in her head; it wasn't quite setting in yet.

"So, Mr. Big and intimidating Lion, what kind of place should we look for?" She teased, her head held high but her gaze down on poor Ur, now taking the time to get back for the little neck attack by 'accidentally' and lightly swatting him with her tail. Oops! Still, she was interested in what he had to say; there were places in the Rogue lands that he liked more than others, for comfort reasons. Pity they could never stay in one place for very long before now.

He romped ahead of her, then got a face full of tail fur. This distracted him enough that, despite claiming not to be a cub anymore, he went chasing it energetically, swatting and bouncing back and forth as it swung with her movement. At her question, though, he left it alone and came to trot beside her, eyes roving the landscape. Sand rolled up into grass that rolled into the jungle. Caves yawned one above another in a huge rocky outcropping. He pondered her question seriously.

"Somewhere without all this wind," he began. He didn't mind the wind, but at night it might be cold, or the wind might blow harder. Shelter from it seemed a good idea to him. Defensibility wasn't going to be a problem. Cub-like, he found it easy to let go of the fear of danger, trusting the pride's promise to protect them implicitly. "Somewhere in the green?" he suggested, looking up at her for reaction. "Near some good water?" By good water he meant drinkable water. It hadn't taken long to learn not to drink from the ocean. He'd made the most horrible face when he'd tried it the first time, and his mother had laughed at him. Indignant, he'd inwardly vowed never to do that again.

Omolara laughed, flicking her tail this way and that, trying her best to keep it out of his grasp. Soon enough he'd get bored of it, and she wouldn't have to worry about it anymore; luckily, that came faster than expected, and she smiled down at him. As always, she listened intently to him, pondering his suggestions with a bit of a nod.

"Very good, that sounds very comfortable. In the green, no wind, near the drinkable water..." She trailed off for a moment, glancing down at Ur; surely he remembered his first taste of the ocean water! Oh, what a fond memory that was. "How about...somewhere that isn't on the outskirts of the Pride's territory?" Lara suggested, padding into the bush, on the lookout for something suitable. She was heading toward where she heard the water, and where the mist from the river smelt different from the scent of the ocean.

"Do you want to find a larger den? Are you too grown up to cuddle with your Mama, Ur?" Omolara mentioned with a teasing pout to her voice, leaning her head down as she walked to nuzzle into his light tuft, snorting a bit to make it good and messy. What? He was so cute when he whined! As much as she teased, she couldn't deny that he was getting bigger, stronger and healthier every single day...he would leave the den soon enough, and even before then a small den wouldn't do it for the both of them. It was a sad truth, but it was one she had to face.

Just...not right now!

This time he completely ignored the affectionate gesture. It wasn't a rudeness, but that the youngster was soberly considering her question, not having caught that she was teasing him. "Well," he began in answer, "I think it shouldn't be too big." He gave his mother a glance that was both adoration and a slight bit of embarassment. No, he was not too old to want to snuggle up to his mum. "But maybe a little bigger than our last?"

Their last before meeting the pride had been reasonably comfortable in size, but an infestation of cave-snakes had made it less inviting, to be sure. Ur had discovered he's not overly fond of the scaled kind, especially if it was sliding over his tail. He gave his entire coat a shudder at the thought, lashing his tail in irritation. More confidently he continued, "Yes, a little bigger than the last and unoccupied!" This time he cast her an amused look. A sudden thought visibly crossed his face with excitement. "This means we can keep things there too, doesn't it!" Possessions were for those with safe places to keep them. He and his mother had always had little to nothing that they kept when they moved on. Keeping things he wanted was a completely novel and thrilling thought.

She couldn't help the fond and happy expression that lit up her face; her son wasn't growing out of her quickly! It was sweet, and it was a huge relief; the poor boy had to grow up so fast, it was wonderful that he still wanted to do cub-like things with her. Bigger than their last, she could deal with that. He wasn't going to stay small forever.

The shudder made her laugh; but she honestly agreed with him. That was worse than the time she checked out an abandoned den that had some poisonous insects in it; that was a rough few days for them...Omolara could not feel safe without a den to at least protect her cub, and the knowledge of poisonous creatures made her forgo that den; she had to search for an entire day for a new one.

"Aww, but what about that time there were a family of mice? You had so much fun terrorizing them when you were young." She sighed heavily in a fond manner; oh the memories! That poor Mother Mouse nearly had a heart attack when she saw the tiny Ur crawling after her babies...but she had to wonder if he remembered that. It was one of the first dens they shared.

"Yes, it means we can keep things now." She confirmed with a nod, tilting her head and padding into a different bush. After sniffing at the ground for a moment, she pawed her way over to a nearly concealed den entrance, giving a bit of a roar into it. She heard nothing but her echo in response. It sounded fairly sized, if even on the small side, and didn't really smell any strong scents of current occupants. "Just don't fill it with junk." She warned good naturedly, looking between Ur and the possible den. Her head tilted towards it, allowing Ur the option of going in first. He was a smart boy; if there were anything inside she trusted him to run, or to at least yowl for her.

"Well, go on, see inside; is this what you were thinking of?"

Soberly, taking his assigned job very seriously, he padded into the cave. He sniffed about for himself, smelling no new scents, only old, musty wisps, echoes of whomever or whatever had once used it as a home. He circled the back corners, making soft rumbly noises to himself, though they sounded infinitely more cute than thoughtful, as he hoped they would. His mothr always had a way of making him feel grown up and important, and he was trying to uphold the image he supposed she had of him.

He emerged from the propsective den with a pensive expression. "It's good," he announced, "but we'd have to move when I got bigger. I'm not sure it'd last us." He sat, having given his opinion, turning his gaze to his mother. His tail swished back and forth behind him, displacing leaf litter. "What do you think?" Despite being an only child, he'd managed to escape feeling selfish and self-centered. HIs world always included his mother as a huge impact. It was for them both, or nothing. Unspoiled by their tough life, he never stomped his paws and whined for what he wanted. If it didn't benefit them both, what use was it?

Omolara stood guard outside the den, ears perked; she was listening to both the inside, and the outside. Inside to make sure that there was nothing in there for Ur to need protection from, and outside to make sure that no one...well...that was something in the past, actually. She didn't need to be on such a look out anymore. Right.

She startled a bit when her son came back from den inspection. "Hum...well, if you're interested in not moving again, why don't we look for something bigger?" She suggested with a purr, leaning over to nuzzle her son. He always made her proud, so proud...and the way he spoke now was no exception. "Remember where this place is though, just in case?" With a hum and a tail flick, she lifted her head again, looking around...and then started to trot lightly, staying in the same area but looking around and through the bushes.

"Are you excited about living here?" She asked, absently sniffing at this and that until she found something else. With a little nod to him, she wandered through the bushes until she came across another empty den opening. "Check out this one~" The Lioness nudged her boy's hindquarters, ushering him towards the den. It was still his job, after all!

He followed her obediently as a cub, though the look on his face was still very sober and serious. "It's definitely something new," he replied cautiously. He wasn't exactly sure how to feel about it yet, though he knew his mother felt a vast sense of relief. He wasn't sure how a pride worked, but he was learning. As far as he could tell, this was a good idea, and the lions here seemed kind enough, thus far.

He slipped into the opening wordlessly, padding forward carefully into the gloom. To his surprise, the floor sloped downwards a few steps, then back up again. It was there that it opened up into a spacious area. He padded about, eyes wide. A central cave area actually had a sort of window, a place where the rock had broken and left a crack open to the outside world. It was small though, large enough only for a small snake to slip in, though it was probably as tall as he was from nose to tail.

To one side was a large section of rock carved out, while on the other side a smaller but less shallow area was explorable. He sniffed about, whiskers spread wide. There was dirt in most corners, and tiny leaves had blown in the crack to litter the main area's floor. Still, he rather liked it.

He popped back out. "Come and see," he called. "But watch out for the dip. The ceiling gets a bit low there." He nodded in agreement with his own words and dove back in the entrance.

Omolara waited as patiently as she could as her little son slipped into the hopefully empty den, as always alert to any noises or any potential threats. She had moved to sit as straight as she could, ears perked as high as they could go. Her dark gaze was on Ur when his little head popped out of the entrance, nearly startling her. Whoa, the kid was still as fast as ever!

With a little nod, she looked around once more, then moved to crawl in after him, crawling as low as she could under the little dip just in case it was lower than he estimated. Luckily she was small enough to get through it without any worry, but she had to fret over what would happen when Ur got bigger; he was already proving to be a large cub, and steadily getting better. She surveyed the area, turning around a bit until she was able to flop over and onto her side, kicking up some of the dirt but otherwise not disturbing much.

"I like it here." The Lioness nodded, peering around at the walls; the little crack that would give them light. Might be annoying in the rain, but otherwise it was perfect. "What do you think? Is this home?"

He suddenly gave her a brilliant smile, eyes shining with excitement. Home! A real home! Not just a temporary den, but one they could stay in! He gave a cubbie rowl of glee and flung himself at her, play-mauling her with soft paws and gaping, gentle jaws. He tumbled about her paws, though he couldn't roll under her quite as easily as he used to. He swatted at her tail and mock-chewed on her hind leg in joy. It felt good to finally be HOME!

The Lioness laughed when he pounced her, but giving a cry to pretend that the might hunter Ur'ahava caught her right after. Rolling onto her side, she tried to swat her cub as he mauled her, chewed on her and made a general cub-nuisance of himself. With another laugh, she turned in the den, trying to pin him with her front paws to keep him still, growling as playfully as he was.

"Oh my! Have you seen my cub, Ur? It seems he's been replaced by a worm!" She gasped out in dismay, flicking her tail and twitching her back leg when he attacked them.

She managed to pin him down while he was on his back, and he batted at her face in play, yowling and laughing at the same time. The place rang with their voices, and all felt right in the world. Yes, this was their den for sure.

With the suddenness of cubbie nature, his energy left him exhausted. He sagged beneath his mother's paw, though he still smiled up at her sweetly. "I love you, mama," he cooed in a very young manner. Despite being a juvenile, he still had many many cub tendancies, not the least of which was affection for his mother. His small chest vibrated with a purr now, and hiw paws were wrapped around hers in an embrace. Sleepy beyond telling, he snuggled his cheek against her paw and almost immediately dropped off to sleep, feeling as safe as he ever had in his young life.
