When she spots him her breath catches in her through and she finds herself frowning. “Why?” she asks blinking rapidly when she realizes that she just said that outloud. Oops. “I thought we were done with this,” she states shaking her head.
“Heh, guess destiny doesn’t agree,” he retorts giving her that lopsided wolfish grin that just sends shivers up her spine. Damn him.
“Maybe not,” she responds nervously scratching at the ground with her claws. She looks at him with her golden eyes and can’t help but smirk. He hasn’t changed one bit, he’s still the goofy canine she had left behind. She’s over him, she knows this and yet she can’t understand why his presence is making her heart beat just a little bit harder than normal.
She starts to think her whole “I’m over you” thing was just a blatant lie to save her some pain. It wasn’t his fault he was in love with someone else. She went into the relationship knowing that his heart wasn’t fully hers, she couldn’t be upset with him. She refused to be upset.
The white dog had always been good at concealing her emotions, at least she thought she was.
“Come on Spades, don’t look so upset to see me,” the brown male tells her frowning ever so slightly. She wishes he wouldn’t frown, she doesn’t like it when he does. “I know things didn’t...er end well, y’know with me running off with Bella and everything...but I miss you” he mumbles so softly she almost misses the last part.
“What?” She mumbles, hope fluttering in her chest more rapidly than her heart. Did he just say he missed her?
His ears flatten against his head as he grins sheepishly at her. “I...I miss you,” he mumbles again inching closer to her. “It’s not the same without you, I always thought Bella was my other half but...” he sighs and flops onto his belly. “I can’t stop thinking about you,” he admits praying that she come and sit next to him.
It’s as though she can read his mind as she picks herself off the ground and strides over to him plunking herself firmly in front of him. She sits there for a minute before slowly letting her paws slip forward and leave her laying on her stomach as well. Her paws are barely touching his.
She smiling at him and it’s a real smile instead of one of her “I know what you’re up to” smirks. She understands what he’s saying, because she’s felt the same way. She feels the same way. “I missed you too,” she tells him loud and clear. She’s not afraid of admitting it, she’s always been confident.
He’s grinning that goofy lopsided grin that she just realizes she loves. He tilts his head, just barely, grins widely and sticks his tongue out the side of his mouth. Sometimes he even goes a little bit cross-eyed for add humor. She missed it.
“But I need to know,” she starts the smile fading and her expression growing far too serious for his liking. “Do you still love her?”
He frowns and averts his eyes. He saw the question coming but he doesn’t want to answer it. He can’t answer it because he’s not sure. “Honestly Spades? I don’t know. I haven’t seen her in months and I can’t shake the feeling that she’s returned to him”
She winces at his words and suddenly she’s back on her paws. She inching away from and he’s so confused by her reaction. He sits up too and tilts his head at her. “Spades?”
“No,” she nearly growls there’s so much venom in her tone. “No, no, no!” she shrieks, ears pressed to her head and her eyes are shut so tightly. “I’m not doing this! I will not be the second choice!” she screams at him opening her eyes. She staring at him accusatorially and her lips are pressed thinly together. “Forget it,” she spits turning away from him and storming off.
“Wait!” He calls after her fleeting form. “No! That’s not...” he trails off because at this point it’s pointless. She can’t hear him anymore, she’s too far away now.
He sighs and practically throws himself back onto the ground and curls up tightly into a ball resting his head on his paws. “I really screwed up huh?” he whispers to himself.
