The sun was rising.

The dhole sat on the rocky outcropping near where he and Ivanova had settled down to sleep before, his icy eyes fixed on the tiny sliver of crimson. So long it had been dark, here on the tundra. So long blackness had been touched only by pinpoints of stars and the occasional brush of that strange glow called the northern lights. So long. And yet, the first dawn would be so short.

A thin sliver of flame, bright and harsh after so many weeks of nothing but moonlight. So bright. Kirai's eyes were narrowed against it, refusing to allow them to adjust to the light only to have it vanish once more. He was used to the darkness now. Used to the harsh cold and endless night. But soon, very soon, they would walk in the light once again.

Soon.

But not quite yet.

User ImageShula dreaded the pitch black of night. She hated the moon and the stars, the cold that endless night brought with it. It wasn't the tangible cold that bothered her, really, it was the spirit-chilling cold that ate at her. It sank into her bones and her brain, weighing her down.

Shula hated these endless nights.

Being alone didn't help her sanity. The hunger for companionship was driving the wolf, urging her forward relentlessly. Shula felt as if she'd go mad if she remained along much longer.

...someone was there.

Kirai tensed faintly, his icy eyes glittering in the sliver of light as the dark dhole glanced around. He'd caught an unfamilar scent, just as the faint tread of paws came to his ears. Who was it? Not Ivanova, and she was the only person he knew in this world now. His most loyal companion.

So it was someone new. Someone...bright. He could just see a bit of golden stripes moving towards him, and paler fur. But it wasn't a dhole. It was a...

...a wolf.

Interesting.

A scent tickled Shula's nose, a strange scent carried lightly through the air. She froze; it was damnably dark, barely a sliver of cursed light to guide her path. She remained where she was; camouflage, no. Shula had none.

And she couldn't see anything but shadows and the palest whisper of light. Was it friend? Foe? She hoped it was the former, but with her luck it was likely the latter.

She remained quiet, patient, and still. It would not be Shula who made the first move.
