As the two traveled, the grass grew thicker underfoot, hiding the scorched earth beneath a new blanket of green. Wild grains stroked the felines' underbelly and flank as she passed through. Perched atop her shoulder, her cohorts eyes surveyed the area. A sea of waving grasses covered what had once been decayed ground, swirling around the goddess's paws as foliage fingers sought to entangle her. But they often ended up trampled beneath her paws, their forms contorted and severed. Sturdy acacia trees still offered shade amongst the vacant plains, their heartwood still living, their fibrous bark etched from the licking of summer fires passing. The sun seemed to burn brighter in the remotely cool, still air that wafted between scanty boughs.

Cael walked, her tail swung back and forth in time to her pace, listening to the grasses undulate and slither with a hiss. The only other sounds were the muted hammer of beaks hammering at trees and the faint traces of individual scents that lingered within the air. Most of them were days old but it was more or less entertaining to pick out those that caught her interest.

Leopard. Cheetah. Lion- her face suddenly contorted as a foul odor latched onto her nostrils. Good god, what was that? She cringed, wrinkling her muzzle as she bore her teeth with sheer displeasure.

"Hyena," she mumbled.

Unfortunately she knew that rank smell without requiring a second whiff. Cael shook her head and snorted, the wings that furled against her sides ruffled in attempt to dislodge the fowl scent from around them. Amongst all the aromas and smells that lathered the air in a conglomerate mix there was still one which eluded her; the smell of which she had been vigilantly tracking.

His smell.

"We're going in circles," Adara addressed. "That's the third time I've seen that tree."

Her ears flattened against her skull. Mismatched eyes remained fixed in front of her. "I don't have a damn clue where we are anymore. The smell just... disappeared. I could have sworn I was on his trail."

"What do you expect? He tends to not follow the rules. You knew he'd give you a hell of a run for your money," the Toucan reminded, clopping her beak as she laughed.

"He doesn't make it easy, does he?"

"Never," the goddess sighed. "But that doesn't make him clever."

Or did it? She wasn't sure. He was elusive all right but certianly that didn't mean he was invincible. Regardless, Cael herself was bent on the task of finding him to the point where she would travel the snow pummeled tundra, pave through glaciers and frozen lakes. But this was only just the tip of the iceburg- the core of the matter was still submerged within the murky sea of mystery. The thought had crossed her mind more than once whether the search to find the god was worth it yet she was too stubborn to call it quits. A breeze tickled Cael's whiskers, bringing with it the revitalizing smell of hope that melded with the scent of fragrant foliage and crisp, trodden soil. She sensed, as she stood still and let the wind ruffle her fur, that up ahead might be a good stopping point for now.

Intrigued and attentive, Adara watched as her feline companions ears perked upwards. No doubt there was an idea being tossed around.

She cocked her head. "So what's the plan?"

"Let's venture just a bit further. Just for kicks."

Unanimous and in accord, the two ventured deeper into the heart of the estranged plains.

Keena lay in the grass, her cream toed paws folded across her chest and her golden eyes bright as she watched the clouds passing by overhead. It was a favorite pastime of her friend Kisun, though the hare seemed to have a lot of 'favorites'. But she did love the excitable little thing. Kisun was one of the friends she got to see at least on a semi-frequent basis, and it was wonderful to know someone who seemed so in love with life.

Besides, they had a lot in common, from what she'd managed to gather. Both loved to wander and meet new people, and both had very limited knowledge of family. Keena was fixing that now though, with her adopted daughter. Star was getting so big, but she was still so sweet. It didn't matter that the little one's 'parents' were a lioness, a hare, and a leopard. They were still family.

A small contented hum rose in her throat, she was utterly at ease. Perhaps she was too trusting, but Keena had always been that way. It was happy sort of way to be, and no one had managed to prove to her any different.
