Neo: "I'm fairly sure that many of you have heard that Akira is supposed to become a live action feature and I want any and all opinions, info, etc. that you may have. I heard that the script calls for Kaneda to be Tetsuo's brother! Believe me, when it finally does come into theatres I am going to be one of the first people in line scrambling for a ticket! To sum up the previous statements this thread is for any of your discussions, info, opinions, etc. pertaining to the live-action feature (may it come very, very soon!)." 3nodding

NO IT WOULD NOT BE.
It would be a live-action, hollywooded rip-off, Americanized and changed and bastardized from its original source, until it no longer even resembles what Otomo orignally created. The actors would probably look nothing like the anime characters, and the plot would be dumbed down with a meaningless, computer graphic'd action scene ever three minutes.
And I heard it was hiatus, but that was a while ago.

i think a live action movie whould be redunit but if they do make one they should do it with that akira custom ninja Master Mushina made it looks like a lil better then the one on the anime but still the best secan will have to be the biker fight on the streets of neo tokyo. sweatdrop

But i also think it whould be better to just keep it a anime and leav it like it is.. My atr class prased akira as one of Otomo's best and one of the greates classic animes.
and if they do make Tetsuo Kaneda's brother oh god Otomo will spin in his grave.

Yeah, making a movie, based on a movie, based on a manga is just a bit redundant.
That, and since it's probably going to be based on the MOVIE, it's going to deviate from the original's movie's plot. Which was already incredibly deviated from the manga's plot. In the end, the live-action movie would be nothing like the manga which I know and love.
The manga will grow obsolete! Nothing that awesome should ever be allowed to die.

I'd watch it but as for liking it that would probably not happen. It be just like any..or most comic book movies. The characters will have the same names but nothing will be the same I bet. Most comic book movie writers say that they are also fans of the comics, and it turns out horrible compared to the comics. But we'll just have to wait and see.

I think it would be interesting if they made a live action movie. And truly, I've haven't even heard that they were thinking about it. Shows you how in-tuned to the anime world I am. gonk
Though, even if it is an interesting idea, I agree that it wouldn't be a good idea. The whole thing would get slaughtered. Best to keep it as it is and to keep it a classic.

The Akira movie was squashed over a year ago, the director (the director who did League of Extrodinary Gentlemen) left from the project. The WB is currently unable to find a suitable director to replace him, and also is seriously considering dropping it all together.

Yeah, I feel the same way too. They also said there was a Robotech, EVA and DBZ movie in the works from different studios, but almost all have been cut. Mainly due to financial restrictions, fan outcries (DBZ was to be made by Fox, and it would have been horrible) and other various reasons.
I think the biggest reason for dropping them now is look how the Comic Book/Video Game adaptions did. Only a few of the movies really took off. Spiderman & Xmen. The Hulk was crap, and The Leauge of Extrodinary Gentlemen wasn't the best either. The one movie that *MIGHT* rejuvinate these projects will be Sin City, which comes out very soon. Its one of the only movies to be directed by the creator, and might turn out to be good.
But if you think about it, North America has already seen several movies directed by their Japanese creator. Ringu - The Ring & The Ring 2, Ju-on - The Grudge, and Dark Water(slated for release in North America in a year or two). So its more than possible we could see Japanese directors/creators come to make these movie adaptions. I could see someone like Oshii-san directing a live action movie.

♠I read alot of the replys in this thread and I agree with some. I believe that they should not make a live action movie of Akira. Instead they should spent their money on something new and original. If they make a live action Akira then they will destroy this guild. So many people will watch the movie and think they know something when they don't. This guild will quickly turn into a guild full of fakes.♠
