I'm not sure I'd like to live there, but Plastic Island may be a cool place to visit if it works. According to this article, the Great Pacific Garbage Patch may have a future as a recycled island. I'm sure since the architect is planning to make the community fully sustainable he will also be looking for ways to keep the chemicals in the plastic from leeching into the environment. I would think since there is no soil there yet that most of the agriculture would be hydroponic. What do you think? What would you add to plastic island? Would you live there?

Plastic is not chemically inert.

It needs to be removed from the ocean.

I agree with removing it from the ocean. We need to stop using plastics in everyday life so much as well IMHO.

Everyone has already said the obvious. If the trash has been "leaching PCBs, Bisphenol A and other endocrine-disrupting polystyrene plastic compounds into the water" already, what is to stop it once it's compressed into an island? Yeah, nothing.

Here's some further information on the massive plastic garbage patch in the ocean. Check out the photo of that pelican filled with trash. This is horrible.

All because there's no initiative nor mandatory laws towards recycling. Sigh. If only we'd take the hint from Japan and recycle 98% of the things we call "trash".

This, for the record, is why I almost obsessively try to lower my plastic consumption. Okay, not almost.
