Eskiva sat on a large rock near the edge of the water. Here at this part of the river the water foamed and rushed around the smaller rocks. There was a waterfall nearby and these rapids were the indicator of just how massive a waterfall it really was. Eskiva loved to hang around on the rocks and make little boats out of the leaves to release into the rapids. She was constantly changing her design to see how long they would last and overall it was a rather fun passtime. Generally her small leaf boats were smashed against rocks or sucked underwater on the first rapid but once in a while they made it pretty far. Yeah some people skip rocks and others enjoy watching small leaf boats get crushed by the rapids before a waterfall.
Eskiva was playing with a particularly successful design at this particular moment in time. It was a leaf and a twig combination that seemed to always make it past about 3 rapids, this was exciting and so she was squealing with glee and bouncing around her rock like a mad woman as she kept sending more leaf boats out into the rapids.

Leith was not a very good swimmer for a water type. This he had only learned recently, taking the risk of jumping into the water at a rather fast-flowing portion of it. That was a stupid idea he now knew. The shiny Mudkip cried out unhappily as he was once again pulled underwater, the oddbird of a Pokemon having not quite figured out yet that he was able to use the gills on the sides of his face. That was probably the main reason that he was of the impression that he was actually drowning instead of just having a poor time of fighting off encroaching rapids.

Eskiva had just watched another one of her more successfull leaf boats be smashed against a rock when she heard a noise in the water. It was evident from the noise that whatever was making it was not in a happy place so naturally she began to look around for the source. It didnt take her too long to spot the shiny mudkip struggling against the fast flowing water. Eskiva was about to shrug off any worries since it was a water type pokemon, but the way it was swimming seemed off....was it even swimming. She squinted her eyes in an attempt to see more clearly and got the impression that the mudkip was drowning...Could Mudkips dorwn?! Infact she began to wonder if water type pokemon in general could drown.
"Well I guess if I tried really REALLY hard i could drown..." She thought out loud to herself. She sighed, well there was nothing she could do to stop herself now. This Mudkip was either putting on a really great show or it was in deep trouble. It hadnt quite reached the rapids where she was yet and so Eskiva jumped into the water and stayed in one place by hanging on to a large rock. Now that she was taller and had longer arms she really didnt need to do much swimming, the water would bring the little pokemon right to her. Infact by the way it was bobbing around she was sure the water would throw the mudkip right AT her. She sighed again. Sure enough the water shot the mudkip right at her and she managed to grab hold of it and haul them both out of the water onto the large rock surrounded by the foaming angry water. She put the mudkip down and stared at it.
"What are you doing swimming in rapids and pretending to dorwn?!" She half asked and half scolded. She had already thought herself out of the idea that water types could dornw and was now almost positive that this mudkip had been playing some sort of game.

Leith continued his vain struggling against the current of the water, but it seemed it was far too much. More than once, he was dragged under, struggling for air and flailing his stubby little limbs, but it was a fruitless effort, destined to fail. After all, his tiny purple body couldn't do a lot against the terribly fast rapids, and the rocks at the bottom were probably so sharp...
He didn't even notice when he was picked up. Not at all, in fact. With the water still attacking his face, and the fear of drowning still at the top of his mind, he was convinced that he was still in the rapids, and thus continued flailing his tiny legs in a desperate attempt to get out. It wasn't until he was set down that he realized anything contrary to this idea, flailing only enough to fall to the ground, eyes widening in surprise at the sudden land. Slowly, he looked up to the person who had saved him, a wide grin coming to his face. The grin fell away at the heartless accusation.
"Pretending to...?" Leith started, looking perplexed at the female before gasping and jumping back, looking horribly offended. "You think that I was... was pretending?! Well, miss, I will have you know that drowning is a very serious risk that comes along with being in water, and it is not something to be joked about!!"

Eskiva stared at the little pokemon and could not quite understand why he was so upset. "Of course you were pretending to drown, your a water type arent you.....you cant drown. Not with gills anway." Eskiva huffed at the little creature, she hadnt been joking at ALL! She stared at the little mudkip hard to make sure she wasnt kidding herself. Sure he was a strange color but there was no mistaking that it was most definitely a water pokemon.
"Arent you supposed to live in water?" Eskiva added in a questioning tone "Well if you werent pretending to drown then what were you doing? Because like I said before your a water type so... Eskiva let the question hang on the air. She sat down in front of the little pokemon and waited for an answer. She wasnt going to leave she wanted to get to the bottom of this!

It was a good moment or two before Leith was truly able to take in the vision that existed in front of him. She was certainly a Poke'mon -- after all, she was able to communicate with him, and had no trouble in understanding his speech. Yet despite all that, she was no proportion that he had ever seen in any sort of Poke'mon, not even the ever-humanoid fighting types. It was quite impressive, in fact. The melding of her humanoid features with the twinge of the Poke'ones was well balanced and--
And yet she still insisted that he was not in danger!!
"I'll have you know that being a water type certainly does not ensure one's safety within the water, my dear!" he snapped fiercely, puffing up his chest as best as the four-legged critter could. "I simply... I simply haven't figured out how to use my gills, if you must know! Just because most are born knowing how to switch between their lungs and gills, doesn't mean that some aren't... well, aren't late-bloomers!"
Offended as he was, he only puffed up further at her continued questions, pacing off the irritation that was trying to woo him into making flippant questions to someone who had truly done nothing wrong -- who had saved his life, in fact! It was all that he could do to be polite and entertain her questions for the time being. "In swamps, as a matter-of-fact. As we do not need to be totally submerged, using our gills is not always... a necessary skill. Some merely... are never taught to use them. And I was attempting to teach myself, as a matter of fact! Well, and to swim, as I've never experienced such clear, quick water before. I had no idea it would be so... powerful!"
