I think it's fantastic. Only people who really want to put their avatar out there would pay that. No nubs.

I agreed to it, but only because it'll be a bigger gold sink. I don't think it'll fix any of the arena's problems.
Back when the AvA first opened, 1k took longer to earn. The entries were still crap. We had good weeks, just like we do now. And 5k still isn't too hard to earn. People can earn 5k back in just 2 or 3 games of Booty Grab. No big deal there. I think that crappy avatars will still enter and will still win.
(Okay, so the first few weeks are good because the AvA was new, but soon the crappy winners leaked in. But yeah, in early 2006, it took me about an hour of posting and polling to earn 1000g. And, since the gold you earn per post dwindles as you post, I didn't make too much more than that either unless I continued to waste time and kept making post after post.)

I took one day and looked at a bunch of the proposals that people had for fixing the AvAs. Just like Elderchunglo said, they sound good in theory but wouldn't work in practice. None of the proposals would really work. The only thing we could do is voter / entrant education. XD You know, tell people that the basics are wrong like don't enter in a full set of items. But then again, everyone's entitled to their own opinion. Those who win are what the masses like. And, apparently, we Gaians have a horrible sense of style. *shrugs*

I think that somehow making it impossible for people to get their guild to mass vote for them is what we need. That and removing the All tab. I have an idea that could work to eliminate the mass guild thing, but it would require a whole rewrite of the AvA system and... eh, I think it's just not worth the work. We'd still have the same voters, so the same types of avatars would inevitably win anyway. And if that's what our voters want, that's who wins. I think the key to beating the system is actually having the AT ban together for a week and make sure that every single ATer votes. XD Hmm or maybe all the people from the AvA forum. You know, just have a mass of 'educated voters' voting and see if the results that week are 'better.'

I like the idea of taking a week and making sure all the AT vote on everyone for that week but I fear that it won't really help because the population of the AT is really quite small when you take out the wondering newbs.
Probably the easiest fix for mass guild voting would be to just ban AA advertising from guild announcements(with harsh consequences). Sure they can make a thread but with guilds that are huge, not many people are regulars and view the forum. Unlike announcements which are forced in their face.

As for the arena, I really don't think it's ever going to change. Gaia is an anime and roleplaying forum at heart. Only a small older population of the site care about how their avatar looks and even a smaller population know how to actually make it look good.

And I swear it's only that small population that ever really complains about the state of the avatar arena anyway. XD
And, well, that's a good point about the small population size. I just took that thought further. I was thinking it'd have to be a big movement that tried to appeal to guild like this that also have fashionable people who may not post in those avatar forums regularly. And, well, by that time, some other random massive guild could just send out an announcement saying, "The AT is trying to band together and vote on 'good' avatars this week. Lets band together and vote on all the crap avatars this week just to piss them off." And just like that, a guild would win anyway~

I went and looked through all the winners from 2006. I swear I remember more duds getting into the winner's circle. But~ overall, I think most of the winners each week were very good (for the time). I guess that's what happens when it takes you about an hour to earn the entry fee. And, what, MCs sell for 15-20k ish? I don't remember for sure. I do know that MCs sold late 05 for about 10-15k and I thought that was a ton of gold.

Anyway~
Yeah, they really do need to ban AvA advertising from announcements, with harsh consequences. I figure people will still find loopholes. They'd just link to some thread they made where the thread just happens to mention that they're in the arena. But yeah, a ban on advertising in the announcement itself would help cut down on the mass votes ...since not everyone will click those links to view another thread that just happens to casually mention the arena thing.

In my own opinion, not a good idea.
Not that because of a bigger Gold-Sink, but because I'd need to gain that Gold back, where other things start inflating.

Oh well. Whatever reason, they'll always make this "Optional" Feature, happen, no matter how many Users refuse. :/

Meh, not a fan. I hardly ever enter arena as is but some people, including some members of this guild, enter practically every week. I prefer not to lose 5k when I have never even placed in arena, I already lose 1k when I enter sweatdrop

I actually like the idea of the raise. It'll be a good gold sink and I think it may dissuade some users from entering because they're 'bored'.

I think that there should be a stricter, more defined set of rules when it comes to advertising. Like I don't think Guild Announcements should be allowed to be glorified signatures. I think that would make things loads better.

I agree that stricter advertising rules would help, and the gold sink will probably help deter a FEW entries for the sake of boredom- but it's not going to miraculously fix the problem by any means.

I still think, overall, it's a good idea.
