The best way to start a book is to draw the people in within the first page. Usually I like to start mine off with a good opening by having something suprisingly happen. Like a wrek, death, or cool dream. You may want to try having it something that happens later on in the story as your opening, and then say "20 years earlier" after it. I dunno.
Mine and my fiancee's series starts off with someone stalking our main character. It turned out that it was both of the main characters in the end. The stalker and the starkie.
