User ImageIt had been several days now since she had found herself in strange new lands. Thanks to the kindness of some other soquili that she had met, her nerves had become a little more at ease and she wasn't quite the wreck she had been only days before. Her heart was still heavy at the thought of her parents, but she knew there was nothing she could have done.

She was lieing under a shade tree, enjoying the summer breeze. It was a hot day and she was doing her best to hide from the sun's rays that beat down upon her light pink coat. She drew in a deep breath and lay down her head, closing her eyes she listed to the insects that buzzed around her. It was calm here, much like her homelands, but, even they had proved to be unsafe.

Kamala knew that she would have to find a herd, but she also knew how hard it could be for an outsider to be accepted. She sighed a bit to herself, wondering how long it would take for her to find some where new to call home.

Zian hated summer. With the heavy armour he carried with him, the summer heat was brutal. He found he had taken to moving between spots of shade so that he could get as much relief as he could. However, he felt his life had been unfulfilled. He was a warrior, a knight. He had been trained to fight and protect, yet he was doing nothing with that training since he left is home lands. He was disappointed with himself, and he knew his clan would be, too. He had to get to work soon before he got too much out of practice.

He was pulled out of his thoughts as the sun came out from behind a cloud and beat down on him. It was as if the sun knew about his lack of activity and was punishing him for it. Snorting his discontent at it, he picked up his pace to a trot and moved toward a patch of shade.

At the sound hooves closing in, Kamala lifted her head to survey the area. Her eyes caught sight of another with a strange face and adornments, her mind suddenly flashed back to the monster that had slain her parents. She hadn't seen him coming until it was too late.

In a moment of panic she quickly jumped to her feet to run. In her frightened manner, she failed to see a branch that had fallen from the tree she had been lieing under. Her hooves caught the side, tripping her up, causing her to plunge face first into the earth beneath her... Just like her mother, she would be killed for her clumsiness.

Zian stopped in his tracks as he suddenly saw somebody spring up and turn to run, but promptly fall down. He tilted his head to the side, waiting to see if they would get up and continue to run away from him. When they didn't, he continued to the patch of shade at a trot. When he finally reached the tree that provided the shade, he saw a pink mare lying on the ground. He didn't really know how to approach the situation. He got a little bit closer to her and lowered his head to her level, nudging her side to see if she was ok.

"Excuse me, but I didn't mean to startle you. Are you ok?"

She closed her eyes as tight as she could, trying to hold back tears. She was scared to death, thoughts running rampant in her head. "Please don't eat me.... Please... Please don't," she pleaded with the stranger. She was so lost in her own thoughts that she hadn't heard his question. Upon his nudge, she jumped and tried to shimmy across the ground away from his reach.

After seconds that seemed like minutes, Kamala realized that she was in fact, not being eaten. She opened one eye and looked at the stranger who was staring at her. Her voice quivered as she spoke, "Are you... Are you going to kill me?"

That was the last question he had expected. He was quite taken aback. He lifted his head and stared confusedly at the mare.

"Kill you? Of course I'm not going to kill you. Why would you think that?"

He supposed his appearance might be intimidating to some. Another curse of his armour. But he definitely meant this mare no harm.

"Would you like some help up? I promise I won't harm you."

Her face went from that of terror to utter embarrassment. She nodded when he offered to help her to her feet, "Thank you," she looked down at the ground, too embarrassed to look at him just yet.

"I... I apologize," her voice was soft, still quivering just slightly as her nerves calmed, "You gave me quite the start," she tried to laugh before looking up at him. She took a moment to look over his adornments, she had never seen such on a soquili.

"You," she paused, thinking of how to not sound rude, "You are unique looking..."

He helped her up as best he could and smiled when she was back on her feet. This mare was obviously a very nervous Soquili. He was concerned about her shaking. Why was she so on edge? He thought it best not to ask just yet, seeing as he didn't even now the mare's name yet.

"No need to apologize. It was just as much my fault for startling you."

He chuckled when she commented on his appearance. It wasn't the first time he had heard it. It didn't offend him at all, though. He knew he was a bit unusual looking, especially to Soquili in these lands.

"Indeed, I am. But I assure you, it is just armour. My name is Zian. Its nice to meet you."

She shifted her weight, then shook her coat to remove the debris that had settled on it. "It's a pleasure, Zian. My name is Kamala," she bobbed her head in greetings to him.

"Do you mind if I take a closer look?" she inquired. She was curious of this 'armor' he spoke of. "What is it for?" her head tilted a bit. She had her family had come from a very solitary area. Just in the few days that she had been in these lands she had seen such oddities.

Zian bowed his head as she returned the greeting.

"It's nice to meet you Kamala"

When asked what his armour was for, he smiled a bit. He had been asked what it was for before, and it always brought up some hard feelings. He felt he was no longer fit to wear this armour, seeing as he had all but abandoned his duties that he had been charged with when he was given this armour.

"Of course you can take a closer look. I was given this armour because I was raised by a clan of knights. I am supposed to protect those who need it and fight those who need to be stopped. But I must admit, I've been neglecting my duties lately."

He sighed and lowered his head, thinking what his clan might say to him if they knew how much he had been neglecting his duties.

"A knight?" she sounded amazed. Her father had told her stories of knights and their good deeds, but she had never met one. "My father... He would have like you," she said in a distant voice before taking a few steps closer to inspect his armor.

"I'm sure you are a great knight," she said as she stepped back away from him, "I could have used a knight a few days ago," her eyes teared up just a little. She didn't go into any further detail, not wanting to burden him with her losses.

Zian was surprised at the fact that she suddenly teared up. It seemed he was right in thinking that this mare had been through some tough times, and probably recently. He didn't want to seem too forward, but he felt he wanted to ask about what had happened to her.

"If you don't mind my asking, what happened to you?"

He sincerely hoped that he wasn't prying and that he might be able to help her. If she needed protection, he could provide that for her if she would accept it. It seemed she needed it more than anybody he had come across recently.

She looked back to Zian's face once he posed the question. The scene of the attack was still fresh in the young mare's mind.

"We were attacked, my parents and I..." she took in a deep breath, "It was a skinwalker. My parents...." she shook her head. "I just ran like they told me to...I never looked back...Not once." she admitted to the knight.

She shrugged and looked to the ground, "I don't know where I am, I'm afraid."

Zian sighed. He has suspected something like this. She was so jumpy, it was fairly obvious that she had been attacked.

"I know it's little consolation, but I'm truly sorry for your loss. At least you escaped with your own life."

He had never personally come across a skinwalker, but he had heard stories of their brutality. Her parents' death was probably a terrible one. As she hung her head, he looked at her with sympathy. Stepping forward, he nudged her with his muzzle.

"It will be ok. If you like, I can travel with you for a time and protect you. After all, it is my duty."

He smiled at her, trying to cheer her up.

Kamala looked up after the soft touch, "I would appreciate it, but I don't want to be a burden..."

She had traveled with a few other soquili for a short period, but they had all parted ways after a few days. She did feel much better with company though. She had nightmares of the skinwalker tracking her down to finish off her family lines.

"I don't really have a destination..." she shrugged, "I don't know which way to head."
