The Labryinth
A fan fiction by me

< Authors Note >

This takes place after Sarah and her adventures. I have added to the original story somewhat and kept a few. This is all made up and if there is anything here that sounds familiar it is total coincidence. I wrote this a while ago and I am still in the process of editing, if you have suggestions or find mistakes please feel free to make note of them and where exactly they are. You may post them here as well as any comments you like. I hope you enjoy the story.

Chapter One
The Play

Tara rolled over and looked at her clock. It was still an hour ahead of her alarm. When she rolled over again she stared up at her ceiling light. For some reason every time she did that this feeling of helplessness came over her. She didn’t like it so she sat up and turned on her bed side lamp. After sitting there for about five minutes Tara turned her alarm off. Seeing no need to get dressed for another hour or so she went down stairs and into the kitchen. She wasn’t surprised to see no one there. She fixed herself a pretty good breakfast and turned on the T.V. to watch the news. There wasn’t anything really on this early. Other then music videos, usually that would have been her first choice. But lately the only videos that were been playing was rap. And Tara didn’t like that kind of music.
When she finished her breakfast it was about the time her parents got up. And when her parents got up her little sister got up too. The peace and quite of the early morning had suddenly ended as if you had run into a brick wall going about seventy miles an hour. If you can imagine that then I bet you can imagine the look on her face as Kassie started screaming bloody murder. Yes she has her good points, but mainly all you’ll see is the bad. She didn’t know it then how much that she loved her, all of her. Eventually Tara managed to get ready and out the door for school, her uniform told a lot and yet nothing. See it was her parents idea to send her to a privet school, and because of it people thought her a stuck up, snot nose, I’m better then you, type of girl. She was the opposite of that. Other than the girl part, the rest were all lies.
In her classes she was quiet as usual and did her work. There was one class she really wanted to get to. Drama class was when she could feel free. No she didn’t like to act but that didn’t matter. Tara was happy to just keep every one in line and on time. When the time came and she arrived to the stage room every one was talking about something. She set her stuff down and joined the group, there the teacher came in and sat down with them.
“All right calm down, I have the new play. And I must say that this will be a big one. Now I know that all of you are good actors and I don’t think I will have to give auditions. So this time we will vote on who gets the parts. So here are the script summaries. Look them over and I will pass around a hat where you will put the name of the person you think should play the part.” She pulled out this huge black velvet top hat. It was sort of intimidating. They went down the list and wrote the names on a peace of paper. Tara put in the name the person sitting next to her did and then read on. The play was very interesting and before she knew it her name was called. “Tara, Tara, you have been chosen as the lead female role.” The Drama teacher and the other students were clapping and looking at her.
“What did you say? I can’t do the lead role!” Tara said starting to panic.
“What do you mean? You’ll be fine. Besides, you haven’t had a bigger role then an extra sense you started coming. You disserve it.” The teacher was happy that Tara got a lead role because she knew that Tara could do it. Don’t ask how she knew that, its drama teacher intuition. The teacher set every one up with the script and was sent home early. The Drama class is not really during school hours. So when Tara got home she studied and got her mother to help out. A week went by and Tara got the hang of her part. She had gotten the first scene memorized and was starting on the next. The play wasn’t a musical and so she didn’t have to worry about singing.
One day when she was tired from all the practice and school work she had to do, Kassie decided that that night was a good time to bug her older sister. Tara hadn’t even had a chance to get out of her uniform yet, and she was alone that night to watch her sister, as her parents were out. Practicing with herself, Kassie ran into Tara’s room. She started to go through her older sisters’ things and make a mess. “Kassie! Get out of my room and stay out!” Tara yelled at her sister. But Kassie came back time and time again. Finally Tara caught Kassie and held her tight. “Unless you stop bothering me I will say the words! And the goblins will come and take you away forever!” Tara threatened.
“No you won’t, you don’t mean it!” Kassie answered back.
“Oh no? Just try it missy.” Tara let go of her sister and pushed her out the door. Kassie whipped around and stuck her tongue out at her. Tara returned the favor. “Brat!” and Tara slammed the door shut. “I wish the goblins would take you away, right now.” Just then Tara couldn’t hear Kassie any more. She opened her door and called out. “Kassie. Kassie, where are you? Kassie! “Tara was really worried that she might have hurt herself or something crazy like that. But something didn’t feel right, it was too quiet. She turned around to shut off the…there was an owl sitting on the rail of her balcony. She went up to her double French doors to get a better look.
When she pushed aside the curtain the owl was gone but in its place was a strangely dressed man with longish white blond hair. What he wore reminded Tara of a 17 to 16th century clothing, like what a noble would ware, but out of a scary Goth like setting. She was about to turn and run to the phone when the doors flew open with a rush of wind. Just then Tara knew who he was and where Kassie was. “You’re Jareth, aren’t you? Oh come on, that shouldn’t count! If I had any idea that you were real I wouldn’t have said it! Please give her back.” She pleaded to him; he had a mock sympathetic look.
“You know very well that I won’t, and can’t.” he stated as if talking to some one that just couldn’t get the concept of it all.
“It still isn’t fair.” Tara said pouting.
“Since it’s so unfair, you can just forget all about your sister. “ He said almost hopeful.
“I can’t. I’ve taken any chance she has at a life here because of my temper. I have to get her back.”
“You may try. I’ll give you that chance. She is at the center of the Labyrinth at my castle.” He pointed out her window and she saw the Labyrinth, “I have to go through that?” suddenly he was behind her.
“Yes, and you even have a time limit.” Tara looked around, and her room was gone. She was in this unknown world. It was dark and a thunder storm was over head. The lightning illuminated the maze. “Wait, time limit! How long do I have?”
“Until the thirteenth strike on the thirteenth hour, you must solve the Labyrinth. If you don’t, then she stays with me forever and you will go back.” He seemed to be enjoying this. Tara had a vision of him doing horrible things to her sister. She whipped around and looked him in the eyes.
“If you so much as hurt or harm her in ANY way, you will wish you had died. I swear it on my Life.” She was ready to do that now, but she waited to hear his answer.
“Don’t threaten me.” There was a surprised look on his face.
“It isn’t a threat, it’s a promise.” And she stormed off toward the gothic like gate. They opened on their own and she entered.

Chapter Two
Enter The Labyrinth

Tara noticed a few things about this over sized rat maze. One was that things weren’t as they seemed. Two was that this was a dangerous place and not long after entering, her life was threatened. Tara had made a wrong turn and when she entered the passage she stepped on a trigger and spikes jumped at her from the floor and the walls. She escaped with minor cuts and a few bruises from diving out of the way.
“s**t, that was close. Is it all going to be like this?” She went on walking, but more careful this time. A few times she felt like Indiana Jones, jumping over openings in the floor and dodging more spikes. There was this one time that she went through these root like vines and they tried to entangle her and eat her or something. It was crazy. Tara rounded a corner and looked carefully, nothing she could see was looking dangerous.
“What a mess I’ve gotten my self into. But I can’t let Kassie down.” With that Tara continued on, the night was growing darker. But she could see light off to her left. Hope of being able to see anything in this maddening darkness renewed her enthusiasm. Eventually she found a promising path and followed it. It did lead closer to the light source, suddenly the stone wall stopped and a green hedge picked up. “I must be getting closer.” Soon she came upon the lights source.
They were small torches, but the fire was big and bright. When she looked further down the path Tara noticed that those lights were actual lanterns hanging on a post about two more feet from her head. “Ok, that’s not so odd. Just a little questionable. But a light is a light.” Tara took a step and nothing happened to her, must be safe. She took nothing for granted, and before she knew it, she was running down the path. She had very little time to spare and walking wasn’t getting her very far.
When she turned a corner Tara found herself running on a dirt path now. She stopped; in front of her was the biggest tower of dirt she had ever seen. It went up past the hedge and still had a good way to go. How she could have missed it, escaped her. “Wait a minute, why is this surprising me? It fits with every thing else around here.” Tara turned to try another way but as she did there was this clicking sound. She turned back around and three feet from her was this pink, hairless, wrinkly thing that was less than a foot long and its head was nothing but two eyes and a set of jaws full of teeth. Really sharp teeth, a good two inches long and as wide as her small finger.
It seemed to be eyeing her, as if she were a slab of meat. Then with jaws open it lunged at her. Tara screamed and bolted with the thing right behind her. For something with stubby legs it sure could run. When she looked back there was at lest ten of them after her. She screamed again and took as many corners as she could to try and lose them. But not one had backed down. Tara was slowing down and the creatures noticed. She stepped on another trigger and Tara hoped to be one to benefit her. And in some ways it was. The floor opened up in front of her, it divided the garden and another part of the maze.
Before she jumped there was a second of hesitation, but when she did jump one of the creatures leaped and bit her on the ankle. She could feel its teeth sink into her; she landed on the other side awkwardly and the thing was still attached to her. Tara then began to pry the things revolting jaws open, it wasn’t easy. Mad that this thing of jaws caused her pain and terrified her Tara grabbed its head and started to strangle it before she threw it at the others. She didn’t see where it landed for Tara got up and moved. She didn’t want the creatures to get the courage to leap the gap.
When she had blindly turned corners and felt a good distance from them did she relax enough to care for her wound. Her uniform had gotten torn and her skirt wasn’t in very good condition. So she tore off a strip and dressed her ankle as best as she could in the dark. Tara sat there for a time resting and gathering strength to go on. It began to seem that it would take for ever and that she would never get her sister back. But despite her thoughts she went on. Totally blind in the dark she hoped that nothing was going to get her. Then she saw light ahead and Tara picked up her pace. She came to a pair of doors side by side that looked identical.
They were big, scary looking, with no handles. “One leads to safety and one leads to death.” A voice pierced the silence.
“Who’s there?” Tara asked. She looked round her and saw no one.
“Down here.” Said the voice. Tara looked down and saw a mouse standing on a rock. It didn’t look threatening. “You may ask one question, but I always lie.” It told her.
“I’ll try another way.” Tara said to the mouse but when she turned around it was a dead end. “What the hell! I just came this way!” Tara ran to the wall and put her hands on it to be sure that she wasn’t imagining it. It was solid and cold. “s**t! This place is absolutely infuriating.” When she turned to face the doors Tara nearly screamed. There were now three doors. She took a deep breath and thought about this. The mouse said that she could ask only one question. But now there are three doors. The rules have changed.
“So if one had led to safety and the other to death when there were two doors then the other could lead to where I want to go. But I can’t ask the mouse because then I would have used my only question. Not to mention he always lies.” Tara sat down in front of the doors trying to figure it out. The mouse was busy being a mouse to be of any help. “I can’t spend too much time on this. I have to get to the castle before time runs out.” She didn’t dare look away from the doors incase they changed again.
“Wait a minute, the situation changed. The rules no longer apply. When there were two doors I could only ask one question. Then that means I can ask two now. Mouse, which doors will not lead me to the castle?”
“The middle and the right.” It said in a more squeaky voice.
“Then the one on the left will not lead me to the castle. Will the middle lead me to the cas… wait what if neither lead to the cas… I better not finish that. Ok if the mouse always lies then how can I assume that even that rule applies still? Oh my ankle is hurting too much for me to think right. “
“Do you wish to hear the rules again?” asked the mouse.
“Yes.” Tara said desperately.
“One door leads to death, one to safety and one to where you wish to go. But you have one question left to ask, and I always lie.” The mouse seemed to be losing its voice.
“So if the left door isn’t it and the other two could then is the right one the door to the castle?” the question sounded right but iffy. Too late to change it now.
“Yes.” The word sounded strained. Tara smiled and stiffly got up. “Thank you mouse.” Tara limped to the door in the middle and it opened up for her. It was dark and shafts of moon light pierced through what seemed to be windows. Tara looked up at the sky and couldn’t see the moon or its light. “Here goes nothing.” When she stepped through Tara held her breath. Nothing happened, that gave her some courage. It looked to be a hallway in a castle. Tara turned around and saw that the door was closed. She opened it again. There was a three story drop right behind the door. Figures. She turned, closed the door again and walked down the hallway. As she walked she felt at ease, it was pleasant enough. She looked out one of the windows and noticed that it was a forest.

Chapter Three
A Friend

She found herself going down a stair case to the woods. The ceiling was now gone and she could see overgrown rubble on the ground around the outside. The moon was very bright and big. The stars around it were also bright and many. Her injury prevented her from going any faster then a well placed step at a time. She wanted to go faster, but that wasn’t going to happen any time soon. “Kassie never had any trouble getting what she wanted, especially when she was hurt. I don’t blame her. This hurts like it’s infected. I swear that if it is I’m going to kill every last one of those ugly creatures! Then I’m going to give that idiot who calls himself Jareth a good lash out. ” Tara reached the bottom and saw that what she had walked was nothing but that hallway. It looked to be what was left of a keep or something. She walked out to the forest where the trees were tall and came in all sizes.
Thankfully there weren’t any pine trees as far as she could tell. Tara had bad memories with pine trees. She took a deep breath and took the hair tie from her wrist and bound her hair in a lose pony tail. There was a path that led into the forest, so she started there. The door hadn’t led her to the castle, just farther along in the maze. She noticed that the castle was closer but still farther then she would have liked. The forest was well lit by the moon, so there really wasn’t any trouble walking.
Her foot slowed her progress, but all in all she felt like she was going in the right direction. When Tara stopped to look at her foot and rest she heard a snap of a twig behind her. She froze and her heart skipped a beat, she didn’t need this now. Not after things were going so well. Tara looked over her shoulder, there were two yellow eyes looking back at her. She screamed and tried to run, unfortunately her foot gave out and Tara fell. “Please don’t be afraid. I won’t hurt you.” Said the owner of the pair of eyes. He seemed to mean it, but Tara was too tiered and afraid to really hear.
“Yeah right, then your going to eat me and then were will I be? That was a stupid thing to say.” Tara said after she heard herself.
“I won’t eat you if you won’t try to kill me, deal?” He asked her.
“Deal, who are you?” Tara asked as he stepped into the moon light. He looked like a normal boy of 19 years. He had black hair and gold eyes. He wore dark clothes and a gold chain hugged his neck.
“I’m Mark. I live here. You must be Tara.”
“How do you know that?” Tara was becoming suspicious of this boy. He smiled a little and shifted. “Let’s just say I have heard a great deal of you. News of new comers travels fast. You’re hurt, that doesn’t look too good. Let me see it.” He reached for her foot without letting Tara object. He inspected it and gently unwrapped the torn cloth she had put on her wound. “You ran into the Trets didn’t you?” he asked.
“Yes, I think. If you mean the jaws with a body, then yes.” I growled.
Mark nodded and got up. “Stay there, I’ll be right back.” He walked into the darkness and disappeared. A little later he came back with a handful of plants. Then he tore them up and rubbed the cloth with them till they were gone. He put the makeshift bandage back on and it stung a little. But then the pain and heat went way. “Wow that feels much better. Thank you. “
“No problem. So, what are you doing in a place like this?” he held out his hands and helped her up.
“Well it really wasn’t my fault. And how was I supposed to know he was real? Now my younger sister is in that stupid castle with that stupid Jareth. Now I’m here and I have six hours left to get to that blasted thing!”
Tara was nearly in tears now and was tempted to take the watch off and throw it as far from her a she could. Mark didn’t seem the least bit surprised.
“He needs to get his head looked at. What has he gotten me into this time?” Mark said to himself. Tara didn’t hear him and shook her head as if trying to clear it. That’s when her hair fell lose and Mark truly saw it. Tara noticed that he was staring at her. “What is it?” she asked him.
“Can I? Can I touch it?” he seemed to be mesmerized.
“What?” she was confused.
“Your hair. Please?” Mark pleaded. Tara was thinking about it and saw that there really wasn’t any harm in it.
“Ok.” She said slowly. He rushed over with such speed that it startled her. Tara could feel him run his hands over her waist length white blond hair. “You have very beautiful hair. It’s so fine and soft.” Mark commented.
“What?” Tara was confused.
“I have this thing that I obsess over hair. I’ve always been this way. I can’t help it. Sorry about that.” He let go and came around to face her. “Well let’s get going. We’re wasting time as it is.” He grabbed her hand and pulled her forward.
For a long time it seemed that he wouldn’t stop talking about just any thing that popped into his head. Tara didn’t mind it at all. She was glad to finally have someone with her. Finally she thought of a question for him. “How did you end up here?” she asked Mark.
“Well that’s a long story.”
“We have time.”
“Good point. A long time ago I lived with my parents in a small house on a farm. We did well enough, until one night when my father got bit by a werewolf.” Mark paused to help her over a fast running stream. Tara didn’t comment on the fact that werewolves didn’t exist because anything could be true here. “Any way my father turned on his first full moon and killed my mother. When he realized what he had done he cried out and ran away. Nothing could have stopped him. So I was all alone that night and I called out to the dark for help. That’s when he came and took me away.
“But I hadn’t escaped with just a dead mother and a father that was a werewolf. On his flight he had run over me and clawed me up pretty badly.”
“So you’re a werewolf as well. Do you only turn on a full moon?”
“No, I can turn any time I want. But the farther from the full moon the harder it is to change. But on the full moon I can’t stop from changing and I stay that way for three nights and two days. It’s a pain in the butt some times though.” They were too busy talking that Tara didn’t notice that owl watching them. But Mark knew he was there.
“Good news, we’re nearly out of the woods. Well good for you. I really don’t like leaving unless I have to.”
“Then don’t leave. I will be all right on my own.” Mark gave her a smile but shook his head.
“Nope, I’m with you for good. Besides, the next part of the maze can be deadly.” He was looking out for her.
“Thank you Mark for everything you have done for me.” They walked out of the forest and into a field. There were these flowers that seemed to glow with their own light. “How beautiful! What are they?” Tara asked excitedly.
“They are Luna flowers. They only bloom here because it’s always night here. The moon replaces the sun here; anything would die if you tried to replant it in the sun. Don’t ask me how or why. It just is. “Mark told her as she knelt and asked with her eyes if she can pick one. “Yes, go ahead and have as many as you want. “Tara picked three. One for her, one for her sister when she found her, and one for Mark. When she held it out to him he didn’t know how to react.
“Take it silly.” He did and put it through one of the gold loops in his chain. Tara smiled at him and that made him smile in turn. Tara put hers behind her ears. “Ok let’s get going. I now have four and a half hours left.” They walked through the field and entered the next part of the maze. It was all stone and way more turns then there had before.
Mark kept looking up in the sky, as if looking for something. “What are you looking for?” she asked him.
“For a bird of a different feather.” He simply answered her. Half an hour later he spotted it and it them. “There it is. Get down and stay down. This bird sees by movement. You move and you’re dead. I’ll handle this overstuffed chicken.” He ran down a passage way and left her in the dark. Tara could see the bird go after him and come back up. It was huge! The thing was like a small airplane. But the feathers changed in type and color as far as she could tell. She watched as they chased each other and struck and hit and made such loud noises.
Suddenly this huge four footed, black, yellow eyed, fur ball run toward her. She would have run if she didn’t see the gold chain and flower. It was Mark in his wolf form. When he stopped beside her she saw the blood dripping from his coat. “You’re bleeding!”
“I’ll be fine. You run up to the first left and turn, then a right and two lefts. There will be a dead end and a pot there. Climb inside and wait for me there.” He told her in her head, he also showed it to her. Tara nodded and took off.
“Be careful Mark!” she yelled as she ran. She followed his instruction and came to the pot. Without hesitation she climbed inside. But when she didn’t feel the bottom she panicked. When she did hit, she was in a under ground maze. “Great, more maze. Just what I wanted.” There were openings and troches lighting the place. Tara sat there thinking about her sister. She could remember what it was like when Kassie was small. Her and Tara would play hide and seek for hours. It was Kassie’s favorite game. Tara grind as she remembered when Kassie was three and she had found the perfect hiding place. Her and her parents couldn’t find her for hours. They had almost called the cops.
But Tara had found her asleep in the neighbors’ yard in the dog house. Kassie had forgotten the game when Toby, Sara’s dog, came to greet her. It was cute how she was curled up to the big fluffy sheep dog. She almost joined her, but that was a long time ago and unless she reached her in time those moments would never grow. Tara hugged her knees to her chest and closed her eyes. “Read to give up yet?” a familiar voice asked her. She didn’t even look up at him, “Not any time soon. I want my sister back.”
“Are you sure? I can send you back here and now. Just say the word.” Jareth offered her. Tara stood up and faced him, “No thank you, I still have a chance. This isn’t over until its over.” He had a knowing look on his face. She glared at him and turned on her heal. She forgot about staying put and left, but when she turned the corner Tara heard a familiar sound. “s**t.” She whispered. But she didn’t move until she saw for sure it was them. When one took off after her did she jump and run the other way. Unfortunately for her there was only one way. Her fear of the Trets over powered her mind. Her instincts took over and Jareth was still there, so she hid behind him.
She placed her hands on his back and begged him to get rid of them. “Please, get rid of them.” She whispered staying as close to him as possible.
“Why should I do that? They won’t harm me. Are you afraid of them that much?” he asked almost laughing at her. “Yes, I am. But you don’t have any reason to save me. You would probably rather let them kill me, then save me.” There was a second or two when she thought he would let her die right there. But she felt him raise his arm and the sounds of the creatures fell silent little by little.
“You can stop cowering behind me now.” Only when he said that did she realize she was holding her breath and her chest was so tense it was hurting her. Slowly she moved and peeked around him to see the things on the floor seemingly dead. But they weren’t. She could see their chests move up and down slowly. Then she stepped away and relaxed, taking a deep breath. Then Mark fell in, still putting on his shirt. The flower was still there, but Tara saw the scratches and cuts on him before his shirt covered them.
“Mark! Thank god you’re all right! Are you badly hurt?” Tara asked him, walking over to him. When he looked up he froze for a second at the sight of Jareth. “My Lord. What brings you down here?” Mark asked as he tied his shoes. Suddenly Mark snarled, Tara looked at Jareth, he was looking at Mark. By the way the two of them acted it seemed that they were talking. Jareth smiled for a second then it was gone. Mark grinned for a moment then laughed. Jareth too looked amused. By now Tara was beginning to get agitated at this silent conversation.
And some how it felt they were talking about her. But that was expected, it was always that way when you didn’t know what people were talking about. So she leaned against the wall and waited ‘til they were done. She was nearly dosing when she heard her name. “Tara, I have a present for you.” Jareth tossed her something. She caught it and looked at him suspiciously, what was he doing? When she opened her hands she saw a crystal ball, the size of a tennis ball. When she looked in to it Kassie appeared, she was asleep. Kassie was surrounded by pillows and blankets.
“Kassie, is this real? Or a made up image?”
“It’s real; she has been sleeping the night away. You have little time left Tara. You might want to hurry.” Tara looked at her watch. She had two and a half hours left. “s**t, Mark how much farther is it?” Tara began to panic.
“We have to get out of here and cross the Mermarsh, then we have to go through the city, and after that you’re on your own.” Mark counted them off on his fingers. When Tara looked back Jareth was gone, but the crystal was still in her hand. She looked into it again and Kassie had moved to her back. Tara smiled and thanked Jareth in her mind. “Let’s go.”

Chapter Four
The Castle

It was harder to get out then it was to get in. They had to climb stairs and run down halls and to Tara it seemed that they were running in circles. But after a good work out they were back on top. Then they climbed a grassy hill and saw at least seven miles from where they were to the city. Tara headed down first and Mark followed her, when they reached the beginning of the swamp they had little more then two hours left to cross the swamp. Of course it was a patch work of small ponds.
“I have to tell you something about this marsh. There are mermaids in the ponds and they can travel to any one of them by a network under the water.”
“So just don’t go in the water or near it. Got it. I have little time to stand here and talk Mark.” Tara said as she walked on the marsh. Mark grabbed her hand and led her through the safe spots. They were going way too slow; she wouldn’t make it at this pace. “We have to go faster!” she told him as she hopped from one foot to the other. “You are right. I’m going to change.” He let go of her and took off his shirt. Tara turned around and watched the reflection of his upper half.
The image blurred and a black wolf stood where Mark was. Tara turned around and the wolf was the size of a polar bear. “Climb on.” He told her. She jumped up and off he went. He was really fast and as he hopped over the ponds she could see the mermaids swimming along with them. They were not what she expected them to look like. But it was good enough for her. “Are they dangerous or something?” Tara asked Mark. “Yes and no. They have an odd sense of humor. They love to play tricks on people. But if you can play a trick on them you become respected as a fellow trickster.” Mark seemed to know them as friends by the way he talked about them.
They were half way there now and picking up speed as the ground hardened. But her leg began to throb again at the wound. She lifted it up to her and felt it. The skin around it was hot and puffy. It wasn’t a good sign. But she couldn’t let that get to her. Only when she had Kassie in her arms would she worry about it. The air was warm and the wind felt good on her ankle, she was going to make it. The moon flowers were still behind her ears and hadn’t moved from the spot she placed them.
Once she thought that they were gone, taken by the wind, but there they were. In her left hand the crystal ball got really warm. She looked at it and saw Kassie still sleeping. And behind her she saw a clock. One hour left. Was there enough time to get to her? Tara hoped so. The doors to the city couldn’t come any faster, they were making good time. But time was still slipping by. She urged Mark to go faster mentally. When they finally reached the doors Mark carried her inside. She saw these creatures walking around, going about their business.
“What are they?” Tara could feel the laughter as he told her that they were goblins.
“Why doesn’t Jareth look like them?” she asked.
“Jareth is the King. And the family has difficulties with producing children. So they value any female, the queen has the highest respect in the kingdom. So Goblins will take any one who is willing to marry them. Jareth’s mother was an elf. She wasn’t really willing. But she did love her son. Jareth is named after a great king that once ruled here. As you can see goblins are of all manner of size, shape, look. That one in front of us is most likely a cross of a goblin and an owl. That one over there is part dwarf.
“Very few are mated with witches. But when that happens you see the end result as an ugly, crook nose, wart and such. But pure witches are very much like normal humans. Your mother could be one and you would never know it.” Mark told more to Tara and the history of the kingdom. It fascinated her, she wanted to know more. “Uh, later. But right now you need to go through the rose garden and into the castle. Find your Kassie and good luck. Just don’t stop to smell the roses, it could be the last thing you do.” Tara slid off his back and kissed him on the nose.
“Thank you a million times, and many more for your help. Good by Mark.” Mark looked a little sheepish and nodded toward the garden gates. As Tara walked through she looked up at the castle. She had to close her eyes and look forward. The roses were in full bloom and of many types of colors and sizes. They were so beautiful. The moon light made them look as if they glowed. She sniffed near one and suddenly felt sleepy. “I can’t sleep now, I’m so close and time is short.” She told herself. “But they smell so good. May be I’ll smell this one. And then I’ll be on my way.” When she took a deep breath of it’s sent she nearly fell over, she was so sleepy.
Soon she was crawling on her hands and knees. The grass felt so soft and soothing. The ground firm but forgiving. Her eyes began to get heavy and it would be so easy to just close them. She could go on with her eyes closed for a little while can’t she? Tara was losing that fight. She had stopped moving before she knew it. Something that she took for a blanket surrounded her. Then she began to dream. It was pleasant at first but soon it turned dark. She was chased by monsters, ghosts, falling; it was as if something was trying to find her weakness. Soon they found it. She was in her bed and her room door swung open. In the door way was her stepmother. She had a belt in her left hand, a brandy bottle in the other.
Tara screamed in terror. She was nine again and the one person that could undermine her was Melody. The figure of Melody chased Tara round the house; Tara was screaming and running away. Suddenly she stopped and thought, “This has to be a dream. How did I get to be nine and in this house when Kassie needs me? This is just a dream. A nightmare. Wake up Tara! Wake up! You need to get Kassie home!” suddenly Tara opened her eyes and saw that she was covered in vines. “Kassie, I’m coming.” Tara got up and pulled on the vines. She didn’t care that the thorns cut into her.
She had more important things to worry about. She ran down the garden path and followed the lights, she looked at her watch. She had five minutes, Tara had to be fast. The side door opened at her approach and she ran up the stairs. Up and up and up, all the while the ball in her hand grew warmer. Taking that as a sign, she picked up the pace. She had to get there, there wasn’t such a thing as failure at this moment. She came to a wall that went right or left. She picked right and the ball grew cool, she spun around and ran left. She past door after door, each time growing to the point that it was almost too hot to handle.
She looked into in to it and saw Kassie still sleeping. Two minutes left, she felt that there wasn’t enough time. Her lungs were burning, but she didn’t dare slow or stop. She dropped the ball and it rolled away from her. She followed it and it was much easier. As she ran she noticed it was going up stairs and down. As if it was being pulled. Finally it slammed into a door. Tara opened it and the clock inside rang the thirteenth hour. “I made it.” She sighed. But Tara noticed that when it didn’t continue ringing, she ran to Kassie and scooped her up in her arms and sat on the bed she was on. Kassie didn’t wake up and Tara was exhausted, famished, and hurting all over her body. Tara fell over on the pillows and nodded off. She saw the door open and Jareth walked in.
Tara held Kassie as tight to her as possible, with out suffocating her, and buried her face in her hair. She still smelled of home, and another smell. Tara was no longer conscious to hear or notice any thing. “Don’t worry, Kassie will return to her own bed.” Jareth told Tara as she slept.
When Tara woke up she was warm and relaxed. That is until she moved. Then all of last night’s injuries reopened. Then she remembered the rest of last night, Tara sat up instantly. Kassie wasn’t in the room and Tara panicked. She opened the door and ran into a small goblin about the size of a four year old child.
“The Lord wishes to see you.” He said in a very shy high pitched voice. “Lead on.” Tara told it. She followed it down the stairs, and down a very large hall way. At the end was a set of doors, large like the rest of the place. One opened and she was ushered in side. There she saw Kassie and Jareth. Kassie saw Tara first.
“Tara! Tara! Come and see!” Kassie yelled as she ran toward her with open arms. Tara picked her up and gave her a big hug. “Oh Kassie I missed you. Are you all right?”
“Of course she is. I’m not a brute!” Jareth exclaimed from the seat he was in. The table was huge and there was food piled high on it. Suddenly she was reminded of her hunger. She hadn’t eaten all night. She walked over to the table, give Jareth a wide birth. “I’m not going to bite. Sit and relax, eat to your heart’s content.” Tara sat opposite him and Kassie began to fill her plait full of food.
“Try this, and this. Oh this too. And this, this is really good.” Tara had no problem eating. She just wouldn’t let him out of her sight. Finally Tara as full, and was able to ask the question that has been burning a hole in her.
“I don’t understand.” She really couldn’t put her thoughts into the question.
“Well, technically you didn’t make it. But you did survive, so I’m willing to make a proposition for you.” Something in his eyes made her wonder what it was. “Go on.” Tara said still wondering.
“Well as you know the original deal was that if you got here on the thirteenth strike on the thirteenth hour and got Kassie here,” he pointed to Kassie, “that you would go home and act as if nothing happened. You did find her granted. But I have changed my mind.” Tara looked at him in shock.
“You can’t do that.” Tara couldn’t believe that he would do that.
“Aw, but I can. Here’s my option. You in Kassie’s place, Kassie goes home and you stay here with me.” Tara was dumfounded.
“And why should I believe you? How do I know that you won’t change your mind again?”
“Because he doesn’t do it very often.” Tara turned her head toward the doors and saw Mark walking toward them. “Mark, how nice to see you.” Jareth said but Mark only glanced at him. “Tara, it really isn’t very bad here. You saw how beautiful it is here.”
“Yeah, and deadly! I almost died countless times! No thanks to you.” Tara crossed her arms and looked away.
“You really don’t have a choice in the matter. You remember what I told you last night? They aren’t always willing.” Mark said to Tara with sympathy in his voice.
“It’s you or I keep Kassie.” Jareth told her and he took a drink from a goblet. Tara watched Kassie play with one of the crystals. Tara couldn’t do that to her. “If I say yes, then you will bring Kassie back to my parents?” Jareth nodded. “But I can’t just leave them and have them worry over me and cry. I couldn’t do that to them.”
“The whole time you were here the memories of you and Kassie have slowly been erased as they slept. So when they see Kassie they will remember her and only her.” Mark told her.
“But what about the pictures of me?” Tara asked.
“Gone, replaced.” Jareth seemed too calm and comfortable about the whole thing.
“You’ve been planning this the whole time, haven’t you?”
“No, just only after I noticed that you hadn’t died yet. That was when I started to notice you. You’re beautiful even when you’re a mess.” Mark nodded his agreement. Tara’s face became very warm, and she looked way from his eyes. She suddenly thought that it wouldn’t be so bad living here, no more school, or a job. She would be free to do as she wanted.
“Is there anything I should know?” Tara asked. Mark shook his head to answer her question.
“There is more to my life then you see here. You have only seen the tip of the iceberg so to speak.” Tara was doubtful, but she would do it for Kassie.
“All right, I agree to take Kassie’s place here.” She said in a sigh.
“Good, now to see Kassie home. Safe and sound.” Mark went over to Kassie and picked her up. Tara went over and kissed her head. “Be good, and stay away from trouble. I’ll miss you. And don’t forget about me.” Tara kissed her again and gave her a hug while holding back tears. She watched as Kassie went with Mark down the hall. Leaving her with Jareth, “It’s almost funny, I wind up in the play and the lead role when I didn’t want it and now I’m living the play, still as the lead role. Just the story is a little different.”
“How so?” he asked. “Well, I didn’t go home with my younger sibling, and you don’t go away, and I’m here and she’s there. And no one is the wiser.” Tara sat back down and picked and her food. “Now what?” Tara asked him. Jareth just smiled at her and said nothing.
