It had taken a while for Callum to be able to fulfill his promise but now Sten was able to directly patrol the gambling den's pit. It's odd bottom half was seated in a motorised chair contraption that hid it from view with metal panels, while the more decidedly humanoid upper body was visible. Appearing as some sort of cripple or midget Sten was able to driving it's chair about the Casino floor where it could better asses people while singling out cheaters.

The hybrid proto enjoyed it's job and suffered little from the long and late hours it often worked. On the other hand it's senses were often bombarded especially when close to the patrons becuase the very nature of this place was deceptive from bluffing card players to supposedly friendly people giving bad advice to others. Picking out the ones that acted needed investigating was difficult at times and so Sten alternated between patrolling the floor and being in the security room with Luca where it could still work but at a distance.

The teal haired proto was determined to get better though, to fine tune it's senses so that it would pick out which deceptions were which no matter what and even perhaps know what sort of cheating a person might be doing. The young essentic was as of yet uncertain just how much it's powers might expand, only that if it would help make it's job performance better then better skills must be acquired.

Sten was somewhat aware that many people counted on it to do well and for different reasons. This pressure created a slightly uneasy feeling in it's stomach sometimes, so much to do, so many to please.

For the moment the proto was stationed between where the blackjack sections met the roulette tables. The feather's on it's head wings ruffling a little from time to time as it sensed disturbences in people signifying a need to watch them closely.

A casino might have seemed like a strange place for the twin Alters to find themselves, but the TV had made them seem a lot like bars with all their colors and beer, and Rahk had done some of the best people-watching of her life at Forty-Five, before it had exploded.

"Now that we're people-sized," she had argued, "we need to study them even more. It's not the time to screw around. CONSTANT VIGILANCE!" She had been reading a lot of Harry Potter.

Ro had shrugged in response. She'd been watching people for as long as her sister had, and she had long ago come to the conclusion that real people didn't spend a lot of time looking at other people's weirdness. As long as you had two arms and two legs and weren't bleeding out of your eyes or running around naked, humans glossed over a lot. But Rahk had wanted to go, so go Ro did.

Like this, she said, gently pushing the button on a nickel slot machine. Don't smack it! She laughed silently as Rahk beat the flashing button with an open palm, glancing around to see if anyone was staring.

Sten paused in the midst of trundling back to it's post, it was returning from a poker table where it had picked out a couple markings the cards. While Sten did not question it's job it did questing the reason it was needed. Why did people cheat? Was it not more satisfying to win money becuase you deserved it or in the case of some games here becuase your luck was best? Those questions would have to be thought on more later for something new had caught the protos attention.

A strangle tingly feeling had gone down it's rather unique spine, the kind that meant another essentic was nearby. Sten signaled to tie pit boss that it was taking a break then direction it's chair towards where the persistent pulse of energy came from.

What the proto found was a pair of girls with orange antenna hanging around the slot machines, an area Sten tended to avoid as cheating with them was incredibly difficult and cost Ill winds very little. Still Sten drummed it's fingers on the side of it's chair contraption and cleared it's throat to sound all official. "Please do not damage casino property." For all it was issuing a warning there was excitement flashing in Sten's crimson eyes and it;s head was tilted in a bemused sort of way. The machines must be protected but Sten also did not want to frighten off these others.

Ro's eyes went wide at the Proto's warning and she reached out to smack at Rahk's hand, pulling it off of the shiny slot machine. The pair turned near-simultaneously, Ro's face still registering mild shock and Rahk's mild irritation, but both expressions melted into smiles when they saw who was addressing them. Too preoccupied with mischief to feel the presence of another Essentic? Tsk, tsk.

"Br... Sis... Sibling!" Rahk exclaimed, her voice thankfully drowned out by the wild beeping of an old lady's jackpot.

"Shhhh!" Ro hissed, the sibilant sound one of the handful she could make using only lip movements and air. She stood, motioning Rahk closer to the Proto. Name? flashed across her palm as she held it out for her sister to see.

"Hi," Rahk said, smiling. "I'm Rahk and this is Ro, my sister. Is it... safe here?" The place seemed awfully public for a Proto to be scooting around, but she supposed it looked like someone's baby in that getup. A little wheeled baby. Her smile widened.

Sten nodded slowly " It is safe if you do not cheat or break things." Other essentics, and much bigger than itself, or not the pair would be escorted to a back room and then forcefully moved outside if they caused trouble. Though Sten assumed the one called Ro would prevent further problems from occurring. In general the patrons paid little attention to Sten if it wasn't about to bust them for something

"I'm Sten," the proto introduced itself and reached out a small hand for a customary shake. "I catch cheaters" it explained, voice loud enough that the twins could here but not so much than nosy people trying to listen in could catch the words over the usually sounds of the casino.

Rahk nodded, finally rising and stepping forward to take Sten's hand in hers. So cute and tiny! "It's nice to meet you! Very. I wasn't cheating, just... helping the machine work right. Won't happen again."

Ro reached down for a shake as well, flashing Purpose at Rahk before stepping back again. She had a strange urge to reach out with the spiraling fractals of her magic, to see if this "catching cheaters" was a power she could learn, but that would surely be rude. It was still an interesting sensation, however. She would have to look into that.

"We're a family," Rahk added in response to Ro's prompting. "To you and the others, obviously, but to a... person too. It might not seem like a job, but it totally is." She chuckled. "Do people cheat a lot?"

Given that her feathers didn't rustle and she got no strange feelings from Rahk, Sten believed the other essentic in that she had not been attempting to cheat or damage the machine. Perhaps despite the other's larger hands she needed more force behind her pushes?

The young proto was mildly confused by the idea of the twins being her family as well as Callum and Liam but did recognize the connected between them and so gave a small smile and nod. It seemed like an interesting job.

"They do it enough for me to work," Sten confided "It's hard becuase everyone is sneaky here," the small essentic admitted. Certainly not impossible and the challenge could be enjoyable at times but ahh Sten longed for the days when they could pinpoint an actual cheater from across the casino floor. Fingers tapped the sides of the chair thing again as Sten eyed the surrounding patrons "They cheat becuase they hate to lose." Sten still didn't understand how losing was the end of the world even if your money or things were gone.

It stretched it's head wings filled with multi-coloured feathers to loosen them before focusing again on the talking member of the pair. " Is being family hard? Do you get to discipline and punish as well as support?" This much Sten knew families did.

Rahk nodded. She could understand competitiveness, but thankfully wasn't consumed by it. Still, Astan gave her everything she needed to live, and even some things she didn't. Neither of the twins had ever known true hunger or the despair that washed over a person when they lost their home, not even after all they'd been through with Avery.

Ro held her hand out in front of her sister's face, and Rahk's double set of pupils snapped back and forth as questions flashed by.

"Nah, it's not hard. We keep him company mostly and tell him when he's being an a**. It's kinda like discipline. Er... what's your... human what?" She batted at Ro's hand and scowled. "Sten? Can you read? Ro's got some questions, but her hand's... too... tiny..." With every pause, Rahk slapped her sister's hand again, then laughed as Ro slapped back.

Rahk and Ro were very strange as far as Sten was concerned. They were entertaining but also a little confusing and the young proto wasn't entirely sure what to make of them. If nothing else they seemed to enjoy their jobs which was good. More observation was clearly needed though.

"I can read." Luca and Callum had taught Sten that soon after it was born. Knowing words had not been important for it's job so the knowledge was not innate but the two most influential being in Sten's life had still deemed it necessary.

As they spoke Sten drummed their fingers on the metals sides of the contraption it rode in.The talk might have to be moved elsewhere soon, there was more patrolling to do yet and Sten wanted to make the most of their 'floor time.'

Ro bounced with excitement, distracted enough by Sten's reply that she failed to deflect Rahk's final slap. After a moment of stunned 'silence' she recovered enough to point down at the ground and begin her own written barrage of questions. The words appeared on the floor in front of the Proto, clear enough to read, but camouflaged enough to blend in to the carpeting as far as passersby were concerned.

What is your human like? Did they pick you out? Have you met any of the rest of us?

In a sudden burst of concerned observation, Ro realized that Sten likely had work to do. Her questions faded in favor of, Do you need to work? We can go...
PostPosted: Tue Oct 12, 2010 11:39 pm

Sten stared down at the floor picking the words out of the carpeting that surrounded them, even if it was reading upside down. The proto had picked up several odd skills over time and was glad this one had come to some use.

As the first set of questions faded Sten shook it's head. "Walk with me," the proto instructed and began to move a bit further away. Sten could wheel herself about to patrol and still talk to Rahk and Ro. In fact patrons paid less attention to suspected security like Sten if they thought it was otherwise occupied.

Once Sten was sure the pair was following they began to answer questions. " Callum is a good person," in so much as Sten understood the concepts of good and evil. "He was chosen for me by my mother." The last word stuck a little in Sten's throat. The proto felt something for Uzi who visited and encouraged and taught it but it was not something Sten could yet quantify. If this was parental love it was different than other kinds they had observed.

"I have met Feodore," a smile lit Sten's face at the other's name. "He is strange but special." Sten had also met Aoi but had little to say on the matter as they had paid little attention to the older essentic during the visit.
