As he got older, Kaito found himself spending more and more time alone. He liked to spend time to himself about the castle, exploring in silence. Plus, it was a good time to play with his shadow friends. And today felt like a day to go exploring. So with resolve the toddler got himself up earlier than usual.
Kaito pressed himself against the damp wall of the castle hallway and slowly scooted around the corner. It was early yet - still an hour before true sunset and so he didn't have to be overly careful. Everyone was still sleeping after all. A yawn escaped him as he scampered down the servant's staircase.
Shaking his head the toddler made himself stay awake as he scooted down a stair at a time towards freedom.

Unlike her twin, Deirdre was blossoming out into a sophisticated little debutant. She wore all the finest outfits, the prettiest shoes and her bed was covered in the fluffiest pillows. And still, she would occasionally throw a water pitcher at her maid for something the woman did. Or worse, slice off a limb.
This morning she rolled out a little earlier and was dressed, rolling out of her room with a yawn on her mouth. She toddled over to her brother's room, ready to give him a pounce and wake him when she noticed he wasn't there. "Kaito?" Deirdre shut the door behind her. Now, where...?
In the most unlikely of places, she came up behind him and yanked his tail. "Where are you going?" She hissed.

With a yell of surprise the toddler went tumbling down the last remaining steps. "Gah." Rubbing his forehead, Kaito turned and sent a grumpy glare to his twin. "Nothin' just exploring." He replied in a soft whisper before letting out a hiss of pain as he stood.
"What 'bout you?" He tried to look for a window, but rather went with the sleepy feeling that still hung about them. "Why aren't you sleepin?" Growing silent he gazed at his twin thoughtfully torn between happy surprise or irritation at her appearance.

Deirdre stood with one hand on her hip and the other covering her mouth as she yawned again. She followed after him and stopped on the step above to sit down. "Got up early," was her simple reply. "Explorin's bad. You'll get in twouble if your caught."
And if he was caught, then she would be too. And if she got spanked, God help Kaito.

"Pfft." Kaito let out a laugh at being caught. Though now that Deirdre was here, he did feel a bit uneasier about his plan. "Who-who said I was explorin' da bad places?" He replied with a frown, "I could jus' be walking. I didn't ask ya to come wit me anyways if you're 'fraid of trouble."
Kaito's tail flicked back and forth as he listened for anyone approaching. Even though he knew that the sun was still hovering in the sky, he felt extra jittery.

"I am not!" She growled/huffed irritably, stomping her foot as she stood up. "I'm not afraid, and I know you are because we're not 'upposed ta be here." Duh! Didn't he know that? Were all brothers this stupid, or was it just hers?
Realization hit her and Deirdre gasped, bringing her hand up to her face like she'd seen the other courtiers do. "This is da servan's place, isn't it?"

"If ya say so!" Kaito crossed his arms in slight protest before looking to the side sheepishly. She did have a point. "Wha if we just think that, Deirdre? I dunno about bein' forbidden anywheres like dis." Despite that he was whispering and keeping an eye open on the hallway above them. This wasn't good.
His argument dropped though as she realized where they were. Kaito's tail lashed against the wall as he nearly let out some sharp retort before footsteps from over head made him freeze up. Oh no!
"Come on!" Grabbing Deirdre's hand, Kaito started to run through the hallway.

"Kaito." Deirdre hissed and looked back over her shoulder before whipping around. "Daddy says it is, so it is, why don't you ever-?" She squeeled and instinctively wripped out of her brother's hold, only to look up at what made him so afraid. The toddler gulped, then ran after him.
She didn't like where this was going. If they were caught..."Kaito!" She yelled in a whisper. "Stop, Kaito, stop!"

Kaito nearly stumbled to a stop if it hadn't been for the fear racing inside his chest. He'd never been caught before and couldn't risk it now! But Deirdre! He couldn't really leave her there...Torn the toddler frowned before realizing that she had started running after him. Good.
Still he only stopped until they had turned a corner despite Deirdre's protest. "Okay, okay. We should be good." He whispered after pulling her in beside of him in the darker corner. Jeez, that was close!

She ran as fast as she could in her big dress and natural toddler wobbliness. Deirdre looked back over her shoulder, running a little backwards before spinning back around and slamming into the corner with her brother.
"What is wrong with you?" That sentence she didn't have a trouble saying. She hissed at him, grabbing his arm. "Why did we run? And what chu hidin'?"

"Ssh, Deirdre!" Kaito turned to look back down the hallway one last time before relaxing. "We rans cuz no tellin' what that was! It could've hurt you - us!" He yelled before gasping and with a grab, tugged his twin further down the hallway.
"I hidin' nothing. Really." He pouted stiffly as they crossed over into a safer place and he let her go, "I jus' walking round is all." His tail twitched as Kaito nodded once before starting down the new hallway.

Deirdre frowned, but she didn't complain because she knew he was right. The toddler peeped around her brother, and back down the hallway before following him.
"Uh huh, ya right." She skidded along behind him, her hands clasped behind her back. Had she not been looking at the random wall decorations, she wouldn't have noticed the hidden door outline. "Hey, Kaito, c'mere. Wonder where this-" She pushed it and jumped back when it opened, revealing a short staircase and a large red door.

"Don't!" Kaito smacked his face. Too late. Oh, man - what was gonna happen now? Though the toddler's expression turned to one of rapt interest as the stairway was revealed. So cool! Though it kinda stunk that Deirdre had found it first - he was the explorer after all. Still, he didn't really care since it was so interesting.
"Let's check it out, Deirdre!" He whispered and headed towards the short staircase and turned to hold out his hand for his twin to follow, "Pwease?"

Deirdre quirked her head hesitantly for a moment before following after him. "Kay." It was too large and shiny not to obey. Everything else down here either had an inch of dust or an old smell, but this door looked brand new.
The door know was in the shape of a chimera on strike. Still holding onto to her brothers hand, Deirdre stepped up to turn the knob. The Chimera's eyes sparked red an instant before it bit her finger.
"Yow!" Deirdre cried and stepped back, popping her finger in her mouth. The chimera swallowed and settle back in place before the lock snapped and slowly, the door swung open....

Kaito hissed showing fang at the chimera like door when it bit his twin, "Dirty door!" He growled in warning before tilting his head towards Deirdre, "Are you kay? I cans lick it if you bleedin'." Worry showed clearly on his face. Going down here had been his idea after all.
Who knew that a door could do such a thing anyways?
Kaito gave one last glare to the door before hurrying inside with Deirdre. "Might as well looks round since we already down here." He nodded bravely. They were royals, so nothin' should scare them!
