The sci fi show star trek came up with the klingons a warrior race there favored weapon being the sword of honor or bat leth.

A man practicing hung gar found it and is now useing it wing lam is seling one on there site.

This weapon is close to one and from what I have seen is used in a similar maner.

I got a batleth and love it

Dan Curry who invented the batleth based the batleth on the Chinese crescent huked weapons and also based the klingon style mok bara off of tae chi tae kwondo and muay thai the Korean Martial Arts Association has recognized it as the first new bladed weapon approved for use in a long time.

Does anyone have a batleth what are your thoughts on the weapon.

In this book he has made his weapon longer to make it more able to defend low blowes.

I wish I had a way to demonstrate some techniques against some one but I can't at the moment due to there being only me and my brother here in this cramped room.

the weapon can hook other weapons up and than attack as low as behind the knee or a stab to the side all in the same motion it can be griped in the midle to add reach which can be done fairly fast by simply slideing your hand down during a swing.

The moves are done in a fluid motion and rarly do you need to take your hands off of it to chang positions here in my pics I did a few time to let people see it from the other side.

its sort of like haveing an axe spear staff and sword all in one as for weight my batleth is about 4 lbs or so not realy that heavy.

I do not have any training with weapons I read books watch videos and use my martial arts training to help me understand weapons I have done lots of research on weapons and how they were used as a kid I loved weapons and armor and spent a lot of time looking through books on historic weapons from all over the world I have colected weapons since i was ten.

All though this is not a true martial arts weapon and this book and the people useing the weapon are acting as if they were Klingons this is ment to be a sirius look at a weapon most would normaly over look Chet Braun has taken a good look at the batleth and has found it to be worth the time and efort to come up with forms.

To much show, easily beaten by multiple weapons and easily grasped by opponents hands. I could name multiple weapons, long and short that could defeat this and different ways inwhich each one could do so. This 'weapons' main flaw is going to be it's weight and design. It's not balanced in ones hands. Because of the curved blades on each end and the two blades that curve inwards on the shaft of the 'weapon' this is severely thrown off with uneven weight distribution, and the fact that it limits possibilities of use. You are unable to hold it where ever you wish, and with the shaft facing any direction you wish, making this only good if your attacking someone strapped down, or if your able power through their attack or defense.

2/10. Horrible.

Yeah, thats right, I'm a a**.

when I can I will post some pics of actual techniques there are some things I don't like about the batleth like the fact that its hard to not go blade to blade wile bloking. I need to work on that one some more but its posible one thing I like about it is that most of the blocks alow you to strik at the same time. The fact that an instructor of hung gar came up with a form for it amazed me he even wrote a book Secret Fighting Arts of The Warrior Race.

As for you being an a** I don't think you are I laugh every time I see the people sparing with each other on the net with paded batleths they do not have any real training as far as I know with any weapons or unarmed skill and use some techniques you would never be able to do with this like swing it one handed I can but you wouldnt be able to do much very fast you always have two hands on it.

I still have more stuff to come so bare with me.

I doubt it's much less effective than a big, heavy sword...
However, seeing how large it is and the fact that most part of it's edge isin front of a flat handle, I doubt you'd find good use for anything but the tips.

If you'd want this to be an effective weapon, you'd have to make large, oval grips, make sure the entire weapon is as light as possible (possible with today's alloys) and probaby make some intervals in the length of the blade...
But even then, it's an uneasily rotated blade which lacks the advantages of a spear or halberd.

It could be used, yes... But it's obviously not quite up there with the effective weapons...

It's just a fantasy weapon.

Now, as for the Chinese weapon, it gets more interesting.
But personally I'd diss the halfmoons and replace them with a single long one in the middle.
Many fighters have found their advantage in using an uncommon weapon because they could catch their opponents unknowing what to do to get an advantage...
I believe this is one of those weapons made for such a purpose.

I havent found any real big problems with this weapon like I said its only like 4lbs or so. The hand grips on my weapon are paded and not awkward at all. All though its heavyer than a staff I can move almost as fast and keeping with my wing chun lesons I can block and attack in baisickly the same motion.

Any way I probably would use a chinese saber or the butterfly knives if I had to use something I like swords more than most other weapons.

Cool ... a large cresent blade ... eek

I have only seen small ones before, so I can't comment on this ... sweatdrop

Anyway, it is cool to see a Sci-fi weapon that have some sort of practical use in real life ... (since light sabers and lasers haven't been invented yet ... mrgreen )

Umm yeah. Weapons that have never been tested in battle? When seeing them on the show they always seemed VERY impractical to me, just because of the weight a proper one must be, the akward way you hold it, and the form of the blade. Personally I wouldn't waste my time trying to learn to, well use it for show. But well, everybody is different. (I know the one talked about here isn't that heavy, but it was just a recap of what I thought from the show.)

And besides, this is the most dorky thing I ever saw. (just kidding about that part.... )

Well, at least it isn't a glowing fluorescent lamp that is said to cut through metal ...

And well, weird looking weapons are always cool, even if a pair of waist knives could be effective against it ... mrgreen

I think its a cool weapon just for fun I like the klingons but I am not one of the people who speak the language and go out dresed like a klingon. I want to learn the weapons use just for something to do and I hope to make a training one so I can try some sparing against other weapons it would be funny as hell if some one did use this in a competition people who knew it would be like eek WTF.

Yup, and that piece of metal that it can cut, is a 1mm thick sheet of aluminum foil ... mrgreen
