The sun beat down on Roiben and Grey. Desper was asleep at home, finally, after another of his escapades. Roiben and Grey were on a walk, capitalizing Desper-free time, and Roiben's paws were beginning to get sore and warm. Grey had suggested they go visit the ducks at the park, and Roiben had nothing better to do. He had, however, nudged Grey's violin case until she had agreed, with a little smile, to bring her instrument with them. Roiben whimpered a little, moving to walk on the grass, but Grey scooped him up in one arm and had him ride like that, his paws resting. "We'll find somewhere soft and cool soon," Grey assured Roiben, the hard violin case bouncing against her stomach with every step, due to the way she was holding Roiben.

They did, indeed, find a resting spot soon: the duck pond had a big willow beside it, and they settled beneath the willow on a picnic blanket which Grey had tied around her violin case. She poured, without touching the flask to his mouth, some cool water into Roiben's mouth and then put it to her lips, taking a deep sip, before preparing her violin. She had waited hours to play, now, and she was restless to start.

As soon as the bow stroked across the strings, Roiben chimed in with his howls. They were quite the duet, Roiben and Grey. "My little Orpheus," Grey said, after some time. Then, she began to play his favourite song; a lullaby about peace of mind during the night. It was still daylight out, but she and Roiben both loved to nap so much that it was always an appropriate song.

Perhaps if there was anyone, or an puppy, nearby, the melody would be shared with them.

It was a lazy summer day, if a hot one. And what was summer a good season for, other than picnics and going to the beach? Well.. nothing. Pretty much.

Or so Kiere thought, and that was why, in a rare moment of un-lazy-ness, she decided to pack up a picnic and go to the park with Ceile.

In their house, picnics were serious business. Everything had to be done right. A small shepherd's pie, assorted sandwiches (cut into triangles, and no crust), egg salad. Chocolate-chip cookies for dessert. Cold lemonade poured into a thermos flask. And all this would be placed neatly in a wicker picnic basket- the right kind of picnic basket. The only kind, as far as Kiere was concerned.

They never walked together. Sometimes Ceile would trail behind, sulky and wanting a nap. Sometimes, like today, she would be prancing excitedly, running ahead and then stopping to turn back to give Kiere an impatient look. They reached the park eventually, and set up camp under the shade of a tree, where they could hear the faint strains of a violin melody.

Pricking up her ears, Ceile looked around. Food could wait, for after all Kiere would leave some for her. She ran, chasing the song, until she found its owner.

"I was pretty sure I heard right," she said, staring at the other puppy, "I knew there was another one of us around here."

And after a little pause, "You know, you should really leave the violin to its work..."

Another Fortune Puppy which was not Desper? At first, Roiben sighed in relief; this puppy was beautiful. Most importantly, the puppy was not Desper. And then she seemingly insulted his singing. He huffed. "Grey likes it when I sing with her," Roiben answered. "Nice to meet you too, though, despite your manners." Roiben stood up, and circled around the new puppy.

"Be good, Roiben," Grey warned, following his movements with her good eye. It was only half a warning to him; the other half was a sort of worry for the well-being of her pup, though the one he circled around looked as though it knew him somehow. Grey thought it was all considerably odd. Roiben turned back towards Grey and gave a nonchalant woof of acknowledgment before circling slowly around the new puppy again.

"I've never met another puppy like me before," Roiben added. "Just my brother... but he doesn't count, because he's terrible." Roiben shook all over. Somehow, Grey suspected that Roiben was woofing about his brother, though she couldn't understand him; she only suspected that in a casual, amused kind of way because sometimes she felt like doing the same thing when she thought of Desperado's constant trouble-making.

"Perhaps we should find your owner, cute puppy?" Grey said, putting her violin away in its case and pushing her thick long braid onto her right shoulder, like she would when she was thinking. "Although I doubt she's lost, with a smart thing like you close behind, right?"

"Grey! You flatterer!" Roiben barked at her, his little brows pressed together.

"Don't worry, Roiben! I still love you, more." Grey laughed and shook her head. Although she couldn't understand what he was saying, she was far more in tune with Roiben than with Desper, and often guessed the gist of what he was woofing for.

Grey folded the picnic blanket up a little haphazardly and looked down at the ducks. "Birds freak me out a little, sometimes, anyway; especially ducks. There's a mobbing on the horizon, so how about we go make sure this lovely puppy finds her way back safely. If you don't mind, that is?"
