So I've been wondering how does one go about discovering their familiar/guardian. Is there a different between the two? And if so, what are the different ways to finding them (or vice versa). I don't have much information on the subject so I've been researching my Native American background (Apache) and their mythology to see if anything stood out for me. So far nothing yet but it is interesting reading. Anyway. Any help?

I'm fairly sure someone else will give a better answer to your question. As far as differences between familiar and guardian is that your familiar is a living creature that's physically by your side, and could actually help you in your rituals. Your guardian is a spiritual form that watches you, perhaps guide you for when you ask for help. There is probably much more information, but I learned of my guardians by the dream world, according to an Native American tradition. I've recently lost my familiar, as well.

well it really depends on what tradition you follow as to how u would go about it. a very common way i have came across when researching different traditions and my personal methods to let Ur familiar pick you. It is possible to find tons and tons of spells to attract a familiar and to bind one to you, but you should give it a little though beforehand.
things to consider
1. what type of animal do you prefer because your familiar is not just a pet its a member of the family, and u will hear many people say that if you walk into a shelter or pet store and pick out which ever animal seems to like you the best it is your perfect familiar, but keep in mind u have to live with it, so if you just really hate dogs don't pick a puppy because he kept trying to get your attention.
2 keep your budget ,like with any pet, animals are expensive and u want to give your familiar the best care possible so don't get a bull mastiff if you cant afford its diet
3. try to think long term which type of animal will suit your lifestyle best because as i said before your familiar is like family it is so closely bound to you it would be incredibly hurtful to both of you. If you had to give it away.
and a side note that has nothing to do with selection keep adoption open over a large pet store, consider saving an animals life , everyone needs a little good karma smile now i will stop rambling if u read all of this congratulations u have more patients than i do

From what I read, and my experience, guardians, well, guard. Familiars take it a step further, they are companions, and often mentors. It is not unheard of for them to help with magic, and guide the practitioner, giving random advice. And it does not need to be a living animal, since it is often impractical for some. I have heard of people having rocks, or plants, or even astral familiars.
Animal totems are very similar to familiars, but in the case of the totem, the person is connected to the species, rather than an individual. For example, a person may feel drawn to the power of a hawk, and work with it as a totem, but it is not a specific hawk that the person is interacting with.
Hope this helps =)

I aquired my cat Aki in october from a random stranger, he pulled into the parking lot i was in and asked if i wanted a cat and i took him. Do you think it was coincidence or was it meant to be? Do you think fate was giving me my familiar? After all i'd always wanted a cat and my parents always said no, but this time they said yes.

That's really neat. I don't know if he's your familiar or not (I don't have one, so I don't know how to tell), but that doesn't sound like mere coincidence, it sounds like fate to me.

Familiars are very rare. A lot of people have a pet they love and are close to, one that likes to rub against their altar or something, and they assume this pet is their familiar. Not so. Familiars are guides and helpers who take physical animal form for whatever reason. Don't bother looking for one, because most people will never have one.
Having a pet who loves you is a gift in itself. Why does it always have to be a familiar?
By "guardian", do you mean a spirit guide or similar? Or spirit guardians like in some forms of traditional witchcraft? Guardians are spirit entities with whom you form a friendship, and sometimes a form of contract. Spirit guides are a bit different in that they tend to live primarily on another plane (Upper World or Underworld) while guardians are landvaettir or the dead who remain on this plane. Guides.... guide. Guardians guard. You work with them in different ways. That's my interpretation; it could be that I'm splitting hairs there.
