Today would be a slow one for certain. At noon, the heat of the swamp was at its all-time high, sunlight streaming through a break in the mangroves onto a patch of marsh. There were stones in that marsh, slabs that jutted out like crooked teeth or hid just beneath the muddy surface of the water. Stretched across one of the more flat pieces lay the buck known as Crocodile Smile. In retrospect, being sprawled out on his side was not one of his most dignified poses, but then, this was something of a special case.

He was sick. Or felt it. His stomach was heavy with glut from the night prior and he was exhausted, ashamed, and somehow strangely content. Still, every breath was pressure on his bleached side, and every now and again he turned, perhaps groaned softly on occasion. This spell would pass, but for now, he needed to recover. Croc shut his sanguine eyes to the glaring sun and listened, felt. The fire in the sky was pouring power into him in the form of heat, warming his bones, searing his fur only enough to sting a little. Water trickled slowly and he dozed into an uneasy, half sleep. After a little while, he began to feel better, scanning the water slowly before dipping his head for a drink before he eased back and rested once more. He mused to himself in the meantime, wondering what others of his kind were doing at this hour of the day. Certainly they'd be prancing to and fro, finding new adventures for themselves and prattling their tales to one another. Certainly a few of them could be more sensible than he.

As it happened on that afternoon Crocodile Smile was not the only kimeti to be found in that part of the swamp.

Tales had been spreading around the marsh lands lately about a vicious beast that was living in the area. Apparently bodies had been turning up in the area, half eaten carcasses of creatures so mutilated you couldn’t tell what they were anymore. Some people thought it was a rogue crocodile or lynx, but there were some stories saying that it was a kimeti. The land in question fell into the territory of a buck who by most accounts was a very gentlemanly fellow, but there were rumors that there might be something more to him. There were even wispers about him attacking a doe; trying to take a bite out of her! Naturally after these kinds of stories got around most kimeti steered wall clear of the place, just in case.

There was one doe who had other ideas; Hearsay could never resist a juicy story and she simply had to know all the details. This buck seemed like a very curious character, not a lot was known about him which was probably why the rumors about him got started in the first place. It seemed unlikely to her that he could be the mysterious beast, but he had to know more about it than the silly little doe who had been telling her the story the few nights prior. It was hot and the ground was so overgrown that it caught around her ankles every few feet but she never once thought about turning around. She found her prey lounging on a rock in a small clearing. The sun streamed down between the trees and lit up the thick air, lighting up the space around him. It looked so hot and humid in the trap that she felt she might drown if she walked into it, but she did, all the same.

He was turned away from her and he seemed to be quite engrossed in what ever he was thinking about because Hearsay was able to slink up to his rock without being noticed. “Hello.” She said in the most friendly, but not overbearingly cheerful way.

Truth be told, when Hearsay found him, he was near ready to slip again into slumber. Her voice had startled him as much as it would anyone choosing to sleep near water baring the occasional crocodile. He jumped and rolled away from her (and very nearly off the rock), ears pinned with surprise and hooves gathered beneath him. His first instinct had been to tuck his neck, and pull his shoulders tight for an attack, but upon seeing a more welcome face, he relaxed.

"Oh." It was more of a whuff of breath than a statement, "Forgive a silly buck, dear doe. You're so fair on your hooves, I didn't hear you along." Yes, he was quickly composing himself, forcing himself into a more regal, upright position though his belly still mildly protested. He'd rather be alone at the moment, but manners were manners, and he was well-versed in pleasantry. "What may I do for you?"
