It was hot. Even in the shade of the trees the pale mare felt the beat of the sun between branches and the scorch of the dry air on the back of her throat. She should have stayed in the nesting grounds, over seen the preparations for the move.

Instead, she was out in the forest, at the peek of the day, helping the foragers gather food for before and during the journey. It wasn't in her job description, but they were trying to move quickly, and Zahraa', snooty though she may be, held the best interests of the Flock at heart, and would do anything to help. Including forage, despite her dislike for it. Pride said she was too good for the job, too high up in the hierarchy to lower herself to such mundane, remedial tasks. She told pride to shut up, that the needs of the Flock out-weighed her own stubborn sense self. Foraging wouldn't kill her, and it would please the queen. Zahraa' lived to please Aviania, the praise of the queen was addicting, and the pale mare couldn't get enough of it.

What she needed now was a drink, perhaps a quick dip in cool, rushing water. The river wasn't too far off, she could hear it of to hr left. Gathering food could wait until after she'd rehydrate herself. She made a b-line for the sound of water, a small yawn cutting her lips, tongue curling. The water would also help to rid her of the lassitude that seemed to cling to her, brought on by the heat of the day. These grounds were not their own, she couldn't afford to not be alert. There was no telling what the trees concealed.

It was nice and crisp. Well, at least for the poke-soq that was currently lounging at the rivers edge, half laying in the water and half lounging on its banks. For how much time the mare exactly spent in that water, you'd think she was a mer-soquilli. But alas, she did not have an aquatic tail as much as she wished she could grow one at times. Hafwyn had become a solitary creature as of late, the water and the creatures who lived in and around it her only companions, along with the occasional stallion or mare that came by to rest every so often. She was always happy to provide hospitality to these traveling folk, mostly because she was painfully lonely.

She remembered a large family in days long long past when she was small , with siblings she never spoke to anymore, or even knew where they were. Now it was just her. She huffed. What a highly depressing thought. There should be MANY brothers and sisters in a family, she supposed. Or perhaps it was her natural yearning for a herd of some sort that made her think that way. No matter. Either way, she was unspeakably lonely, and decided she would travel somewhere where she could find a family. Sitting up a bit, she watched the river rush by her legs, her tails flipping water up in small splashes to cool the rest of her body as she thought about how to do this.

Traveling was always so incredibly boring. It was tiring to do so alone, not to mention there was always the risk of being somewhere where there wasn't any water to lounge in. And what about Soquilli that constantly looked for fights? Wynnie was not a fighter, she knew this much. A being of emotion, she'd always been the tender one among her peers. She needed a companion that could fight somebody off if need be. Besides, she was far too cute to get in harms way. Looking at her reflection, she smiled and swished her prized mane to and fro in a moment of vanity, not hearing the rustle of the foliage around the river.

Only a few more meters til the rivers edge, and her thirts could be quenched. The heat engulfing her body rinsed away in the gentle waves of crisp, clear water. Zahraa' frowned, pale lips smacking as she trudged the remain length between herself and the edge of the wood, stepping out of the cover
of shade and into the blinding radiance of the direct sunlight. White eyes were momentarily dazzled, and she slowed her pace as she crossed the short bank, blinking against the burn to her retinas. She was no typically a creature of the sun, spending most her time beneith a canopy of trees. She preferred her light diffused by the surrounding trees, so much gentler.

The first step onto wet sand made her pause, talon tipped toes wiggling in the moist, cool soil. Savoring the feel before wading out into the middle of the gently swirling water, letting it was over her back, but keeping her neck and head dry. Lowering only to drink and cool her throat.

She hadn't wandered out of the wood too close to the other mare, perhaps a few meters down stream, so Raa' didn't notice her right away. Even after the dark splotchs in her vision had faded she didn't imediantly notice. She'd seriously wonder about her survival skills, save that the golden mare wasn't moving, and any faint sound she may make was drowned in the sound of moving water. Raa' wasn't sure what had prompted her to glance up and over, but she wasn't exactly surprised to see someone there.

A stranger from the other herd? Could have been, and Zahraa' had no interest in starting trouble. She was sure in her skills, but attacking a member of the opposing herd in there own territory was not something easily forgiven. So she stood very still, shoulder deep in the river, and watched, silently.
