Mama was gone again. The little cub wobbled on uncoordinated paws, looking around the den at all his sleeping siblings before turning his eyes back to the entrance. It was where mama went. And he was scared, he couldn’t sleep. He had a bad dream, and he wanted her to nuzzle him and love him and tell him it was okay.

Snuffling quietly, falling once or twice, he made his way from where his brother and sisters still slept in the warm huddle mother had left them in. Kanie, he knew, had gone to see outside before. Mama was out there. He must be able to find her if he looked. Kanie had been okay, though she could walk better than he could… she was walking better than all of them, except for mama.

But that was just because mama was the best was all. Oversized ears laid anxiously back, the little white cub poked his nose out into the hallway, trying to take a step and tripping over his paws to land in a sprawling heap of fur. ”M…mama?” Hikari called, his voice tiny and quavering. He couldn’t see her out here either!

Aiko’s tail lashed behind her as the lithe cheetah prowled back down towards her den. She knew Nana was right, that avoiding going to her job to look after the babies would only draw more attention. And she couldn’t leave them with Ajila, not while their pride’s only nanny was looking after Nyoka’s cubs! No, she would look after them herself. She’d find a way, somehow. But in the mean time, every second apart from them was agony and anxiety the depth and breadth of which she’d never known until she’d four tiny fragile precious little lives depending solely upon her.

Her ears pricked at the tiny mewling little cry, hearing her small son’s plaintive cry though she’d never recognized something from so far so quickly. Instantly her quick trot broke into a sprint, horror that something terrible was happening to her babies suffusing her and sending adrenaline spiking through her veins. Had they been discovered? Was someone taking them? Hurting them? What was wrong?

Mana was bored, and when he was bored but disallowed to leave the lands because Nyoka wanted him close by, he had a tendency to prowl. He stalked through the slaves' dens, checking on the newest acquisitions to make sure they were settling in and causing no trouble. He stalked to the dens where the low grunts resided, but most of those were empty at this hour, as their occupants were at work, which was as it should be. He walked past his own den without giving it a second glance.

None of this was interesting. He wanted to stretch his legs and run. His last patrol had gone magnificently, though it was not one he should have been on at all. He couldn't help hoping that there might be a repeat experience if he could get himself out of the pride for a bit, though maybe not with the same cheetah. Or with her. She'd been lots of fun, after all. Just the thought of it brought a smug grin to his face.

He continued walking, his pace rapid even though he had nowhere to be, but stopped short when he heard a childish cry of "Mama?" emanating from the entertainers' quarters. Another one of Aiko's cubs had slipped her watch, he supposed. He was strongly tempted to ignore the plaintive voice and keep walking, given his feelings toward cubs in general, but he truly had nothing better to do and he would feel a little bad for Aiko if she returned to her den and found one of her offspring missing.

He peered around the corner, wondering if he would see the same dark cub as before, but that was not the sight which greeted him. Instead he saw a white cub with pink markings which closely resembled, at least to his eyes, Dysi's. At least the markings resembled Dysi's more than they did any other male in the pride. Interesting, but not the highest priority for the moment. The highest priority, he decided, was getting the cub back where it belonged with no one the wiser.

He padded over to the pale cub and regarded it for a moment, wondering if he could herd the cub back to the den, or if he'd actually have to pick it up. Or maybe he could reason with it. He didn't really know when cubs started talking, but this one knew how to say Mama. That probably didn't mean much.

With a sigh he bent down and caught the cub in his jaws, some hitherto unknown instinct directing him so that he picked the cub up without hurting it. The sooner the cub was replaced, the sooner he could go back to being bored.

Hikari wobbled and stumbled away from the den, wondering if mama was close by in this direction instead. She was never gone for too long, and he thought maybe she got lost or something. Because it felt like she'd been gone for ages and ages. And he couldn't sleep. He was scared and sad, and he just wanted his mama to come and keep him company for a little bit.

Since Aiko always did that anyway, her little son didn't seen anything wrong with wanting this. But he wasn't prepared for the stranger. Mismatched eyes went huge as he looked up at the big thing headed right for him. Hikari froze, flattening against the floor where he'd tripped over himself, looking up at the stranger with a strong degree of apprension and even fear.

It wasn't mama. He didn't know anything this big that wasn't mama or...or...Nana. And mama didn't seem to like the Nana when it had come to see her, she'd growled until it went away. That had been scary! Were all strangers scary?

Before he could come to any kind of conclusion, the big stranger had reached down and picked him up. And then Hikari knew, yes, strangers were very, very scary. It didn't hurt, being picked up like this, it wasn't much different from what mama did sometimes. But this stranger didn't look like mama, or smell like mama. And it was very frightening to the sheltered cub.

"Mama!" he cried out, squirming pointlessly as he'd no means of escape. "No, no b-bite," Hikari tried, remembering the way mama had scolded Kanie for biting too hard. That had hurt, his ear was still sore from being chewed on. And this stranger's teeth were much much bigger than his sister's...

She was probably attracting some degree of attention, sprinting through the dens to the entertainer's quarters, and she skidded several times into near-collisions. But none of that mattered. What mattered was the cry, perhaps imagined as it had been several times. But it didn't matter if she rushed for no reason. What would matter was if she took her time only to discover too late that, this time, the alarm had been real.

Aiko had never been a particularly responsible cheetah. She'd looked after her own problems, yes, but more to keep Nana from bothering her than to be responsible or mature. Maybe self-sufficient. But she enjoyed fun too much to be truly responsible...until now.

Amazing what four tiny little black and white balls of fluff could do to change a person.

Neither hearing nor smelling anything out of the ordinary, she'd slowed slightly as she drew near the last turn before her own den. No need to go charging in and frighten the cubs herself after all...she really needed to find them a nanny. But who? Where? Ajia was busy with Nyoka and Dysi's cubs, and she'd no doubts where her four would stand when the female was overwhelmed with eight youngsters to watch...

Rounding the corner by her den, she saw no one. Relaxed she padded inside, counting one...two...three. Three cubs. Hikari was missing. Where had her little boy gone? Frantic, she looked around, calling his name very softly so as not to wake the others. He wasn't in the den. Where would he have gone? The only one who could walk well by now was Kanie, and she was curled up looking as innocent as a little black dove!

...what was that?

Her sleek black fur bristled instantly at the plaintive little wail. That was definitely Hikari, she'd know his voice anywhere. He'd been the first to speak, his first word making him the first to call her 'mama'. She'd been so filled with pride and love in that moment... why would he be crying about biting?

Who was biting her baby?

In a flash she was out of the den, bolting towards the very much not imagined voice. She very nearly collided with Mana, her indigo eyes flying wide with surprise, than narrowing with a ferocious hostility. Her body quivered where she crouched, tensed. Clearly the only thing that save Mana from being pounce upon and mauled was the little white fluffball in his jaws.

"Put. Him. Down," Aiko snarled in a tone utterly unlike her usual sweetly seductive voice, fangs bared and claws pressing into the ground.

Lovely. The kid could talk. Mana should have tried talking to it. But how was he to know? The last one hadn't been able to talk, and Mama was supposed to be one of the first things any cub learned to say. There was no way Mana could have anticipated that the cub would be able to speak. Knowing that, however, Mana supposed he could put him down, which would get the furball out of his mouth, and attempt to talk to him. Of course, having recently had a conversation with Enzi had left Mana with little interest in carrying on more juvenile communication, but it would definitely be better than having the thing squealing while he tried to move it. He was certain that would bring some concerned parent running.

While he was deciding a concerned someone did, in fact, show up. He looked at Aiko in wide-eyed surprise as she tensed, obviously ready to attack him. His first thought was a much put-upon Spirits!, followed shortly by the conclusion that the cubs were actually hers after all, and that her den was their home and not just a convenient place to deposit the wayward ones. That was good to know. Interesting, at any rate. Nyoka would probably find it interesting. Or maybe she wouldn't. Pregnancy was a hazard of an entertainer's lifestyle.

All that aside, Mana could tell that Aiko meant business. Violent, angry, overprotective mother-type business. He didn't think that she was in a state to be reasonable, and he would rather not get into any sort of physical altercation with her. He'd never seen it for himself, but he'd heard it said that she could handle herself in a fight. Mana was not really a fighter, he was more of a runner. So far the only reason he'd done as well as he had in fights was that he had the good sense only to get into fights he could win. There was little that could beat a mother protecting her cubs.

Moving slowly, Mana deposited the pale cub on the ground, relieved to get the furry body out of his mouth. There was something which just didn't seem right about having cheetah fur in his mouth. He didn't like it. And given the general fluffiness of cubs, his tongue felt strangely coated. In that moment he decided he was never having cubs. Not that there was much danger of that in the short term. Cubs didn't just appear out of thin air, and last night had been the first time he'd had sex in longer than he cared to think about.

"Is it yours? He. Is he yours?" Mana said lightly. "He's no worse for the wear, I promise."

Hikari was making tiny frightened pitiful little noises as he stared, mismatched eyes wide, at his mama. He wanted her to scoop him up and love him and make the scary stranger go away. But mama was being scary too! Was something really, really bad happening? What was happening?

As before, when Nana came to visit his sister, Aiko’s feriouciously protective response was almost as frightening as the presence of the stranger. So, naturally, Hikari’s soft whimpers grew faster, his tiny body trembling in Mana’s gentle grip even as he was deposited on the ground. He tried to take a step towards mama, but his paws had been uncoridinated before he was picked up and frightened. Now he was lucky he didn’t bash his nose when he fell.

“M-mama…” he whimpered, his paws sliding uselessly against the ground. Kanie would walk so well, why couldn’t he even stand?

Aiko’s normally flirtatious indigo eyes were narrowed with hostile attentiveness at Mana, her tail lashing furiously behind her as she waited for him to make his move. And if it wasn’t the right move, he might never move again! That this would get her into all kinds of trouble never even occurred to the cheetah. He had her baby. If he even looked like he might almost consider something that might harm the cub she’d shred him!

The moment he placed Hikari on the ground Aiko sprang forward, one paw darting out to scoop her poor frightened son in close to her. Her eyes were still narrowed at Mana, and her tail whipped behind her, but she looked somewhat less likely to jump on him and start tearing his fur off.

She lowered her head to lick the white ball of fluff a few times, crooning softly to him, but her gaze was still fixed on Mana. She wasn’t finished with him yet. “What were you doing?” she demanded when he lifted her head. Her voice was low and ominous, but her tone was pitched softly enough to not disturb her little one. Though Hikari seemed to be picking up on phrases much more quickly than she’d thought.

The more he thought about it, the more Mana thought it likely the cub's vocabulary was limited to Mama and a few other words. Though he did have to remind himself that the cub had also expressed a vehement desire not to be bitten. As if Mana would. a cub that size was simply too small to be chastised with nips, even if that had been his role, which it wasn't. Nipping a cub that size would be something akin to cannibalism, and while Mana had no specific objections to ritualized cannibalism, he didn't tend to practice it himself. He'd never been of sufficient rank in the Mizimu, for one thing, and for another he'd heard that predator meat was not particularly enjoyable. Though baboons and hyenas ate cubs with disgusting regularity.

It took a great deal of self-control on Mana's part to hold still when Aiko's paw shot out. He had no difficulty imagining that paw slashing across and into his flesh. It wasn't a pleasant thought, and it was made even less pleasant by the knowledge that he would not do more than hiss at her in retaliation. She was a mother with cubs, he thought, and in this situation she would be a fiercer fighter than he. Besides, she was the boss's sister and most of the time he would have considered her a friend, or at least a friendly acquaintance.

"This cub - your cub? - was making noise and I investigated," he explained, injecting no particular emphasis or inflection into his speech. He'd rather she didn't have any basis for imagining any implication of threat or sarcasm, or negativity of any kind.

"Given the difficulties I had convincing your other cub to return to the den, I thought it might be more expedient to simply put him there, rather than trying to herd him back." He was, of course, operating under the assumption that the cubs were hers, but he didn't think he was wrong.

Now that he was in mama's care, Hikari was significantly less upset by the presence of the big stranger. Mama even seemed less upset now too, which was good because when mama was upset it was very upsetting. But she didn't seem so mad this time. That was good. That was very good.

She didn't even seem mad at him for being outside the den. Even though he knew he wasn't supposed to. Mama said 'stay' and put them back gently when they followed, telling them 'stay' again. But...but he'd just wanted to find her! Nervously, he licked the paw holding him with a tiny squeak of a purr before shifting to cuddle against her leg, his mismatched eyes still fixed on the stranger.

Maybe now that he wasn't scared, he was a little bit curious...

The hostility faded as Mana spoke, though she was still edgy and mistrustful. For all he'd let slip that he was Nyoka's ears, she still liked him. He was a likable sort as far as she was concerned. Certainly not the type she imagined would steal cubs! ...unless he'd been ordered too.

"Yes, he's mine," Aiko admitted softly, "He's mine, with two sisters and a brother." Now what? Just because Nyoka hadn't appeared following Nana's discovery of her little ones didn't mean Mana could be expected not to relay the news to Nyoka. It was his job, and while the rational part of her mind couldn't fault him for that, something utterly ferocious promised that if his actions led them to harm she'd skin him for it.

"I...I want to keep them," she said quietly, "I know I'm just an entertainer, but...I don't want them raised by some stranger, even though I'm sure Ajia is quite nice. And...and I don't know who their father is..." the cheetah said meekly, "I'm not even sure if he's in the pride...that time I went out would've fallen right around the time for...and I...ah..." her ears laid back awkwardly. She did have an idea of who she wanted the father to be, and the cubs not only looked right, he'd also been around at the right time. But even if he was, as she'd so fervently hoped, she could hardly tell anyone. Even if it was probably him, and the little ones looked like him... though she'd have to deny it.

But Dysi wouldn't even talk to her ever since she'd had them! All she'd done was tell him she had cubs, and now...now...Now he was avoiding her!

Distinctly unhappy, she lowered her head to nuzzle the little white and pink cub in her paws. What would Mana do now? She really didn't want to cause trouble, she did like it here. But she would not allow anyone to take her babies from her!

PostPosted: Thu Jul 01, 2010 1:28 pm

Mana dismissed the cub completely once he was back in his mother's care. He wasn't someone who much enjoyed spending time with cubs if it could possibly be avoided, and now that the cub was very clearly no longer responsibility he didn't feel any obligation to spare any thought for the cub as an individual. Which didn't mean he wasn't still thinking of the cub's implications, but that didn't require him to expend any thought on the cub, himself.

"Four. Congratulations," Mana said. The congratulations were an automatic response, given his personal feelings on parenthood. "What are their names?"

Asking after the cubs' names was as much a conditioned response as offering congratulations had been, but he decided the information might be useful. Not in the near future, since they were probably too young to serve as anything other than hostages or nuisances and didn't need names for either purpose, but eventually they would grow up to have personalities and purposes, he supposed. Also, it might contribute to the overall impression that he cared about the cubs.

"I don't see any reason why you shouldn't be allowed to keep them, providing they don't interfere with your work," Mana said, glancing down at the very young male. He was pretty sure he wasn't alone in his preference that Aiko keep her cubs somewhere else while working. Even if she kept her entertaining to nonsexual interaction, it would still detract from the overall pleasure of the experience to have cubs tagging along.

A moment later he added, "I'm saying that personally, not as an extension of Nyoka. I don't know how much she knows about your cubs, and I have no idea what her thoughts are on the subject."

But it would probably fall to him to do something about it when she did reach a decision. It didn't seem like the kind of task Nanashi would take care of, even though Aiko was his sister. It would be nice if he took care of this, though it probably wouldn't be to Aiko's satisfaction if he did.

On the subject of their parentage, Mana decided to keep silent. He had his theory, but if Aiko was going to claim ignorance, even given this particular cub's appearance, he wasn't going to push it. Not unless he was asked to, anyway.

"Thank you," Aiko mumbled to the congratulations, nuzzling her little one again. People might not think as much, given her lifestyle, but she loved cubs. She'd always wanted a little family of her own, and these little ones were exactly perfect. "This is Hikari, he's the eldest."

The cub looked up at the mention of his name, squeaking happily when she nuzzled him and trying to lick her nose. He loved mama, and mama love him and his brother and his sisters. All was right with his world now that she was here.

"Jiro is next, another boy, then Keikanei and Satomei are the girls," she named them in order, watching Mana cautiously as she did so. She liked him, she did. But she liked her cubs much more, more even than her brothers. More even than the one she hoped was their father. Aiko hadn't known it could feel like this, but it did.

"They haven't," Aiko assured Mana when he commented about her work, "A little in the beginning," she admitted, "But only because I was too afraid to leave them alone. I still worry, but they're bigger now. They know they're supposed to stay in the den..." she added, glancing down at Hikari again.

At the word 'stay' Hikari's ears laid back and the cub squirmed guiltily, looking worriedly up at his mother. She didn't seem angry. But he knew he wasn't supposed to be out.

"...stay..." he repeated meekly, wishing he knew how to properly express that he'd had a scary dream and just wanted to see if she was outside. "Mama. Out," he tried, hoping she wasn't mad.

"Yes, but you still have to stay when I'm out," she chided softly, before looking back up at Mana. "I haven't told people yet, I wanted to have some kind of plan before I had to work out what to do with everyone. I just want them to stay with me... I know they're supposed to go to nannies, but...Ajia is the only one right now and she seems like she'd have her paws full with Dysi's and Nyoka's cubs..." She scuffled her paws against the ground unhappily. She wanted her little ones safe was all, there couldn't be anything wrong with that!

Mana nodded, acknowledging that he had heard the cub's name. He would make an effort to remember it. Nyoka might be interested, for one thing, and it would probably make Aiko more inclined to like him if he could be bothered to seem to care about her cubs. He was not much impressed by how cute Hikari was when he squeaked, or the intelligence it implied that he recognized and responded to his name. Cubs, by and large, were beneath his interest.

Nevertheless, Mana continued to nod and note the names of Aiko's other three cubs. He didn't think it would be prudent to mention that he had encountered one of her other cubs already, particularly since he didn't know which one it was. He hadn't wanted to be rude and actually check what gender the cub was, and it hadn't been readily apparent, given the generally androgynous nature of young creatures.

"Is this your first litter?" he asked. Perhaps it wasn't exactly polite to ask, but he was just a little curious.

Mana didn't pay any attention to Hikari's words, not having the patience to try to puzzle out how the three words were supposed to fit together into some sort of cohesive idea. There were an awful lot of ways to interpret that, after all. He decided just to continue talking. It wasn't as though the cub was addressing him, after all.

"I've heard caring for larger litters can be a bit difficult for first-time mothers. You might not want to overburden Ajia, but you shouldn't be afraid to go to her for advice if you need it."

Some might think it odd that a cheetah as proud as Mana would recommend seeking advice, but it would behoove them to remember that he wasn't saying that was what he would do. He was only saying that was what someone else should do. There was a world of difference. Personally, Mana would rather die than admit ignorance on a topic he was supposed to know about.

She'd known she liked Mana. He was taking the news so much better than Nanashi had, and he was her own brother! Suspicious, snappy, and generally disagreeable in regards to his own kin! Mana might not be family, but she liked to think of them as friends...kind of. She didn't trust him with everything, though that was merely because she knew whose ears he was. But she rather thought the two of them on good terms.

"Yes, this is my first," she admitted easily, some part of her mind wondering vaguely if he'd expected otherwise given the rumors about her. Even she had heard them, and one or two seemed a little exaggerated. Not that the regular ones were always simple and easy to believe! "No, they're fine," the cheetah said defensively. "There's only the four of them, that's not a big litter. And they're usually very good, and aren't interfering with anything."

She didn't want Nyoka to think they were causing her trouble, the cheetah would probably insist that someone else watch her precious babies. Nyoka might have only the best for the pride in mind, but Aiko would maul anyone who tried to take her cubs from her.

"Come on, you can meet them. But be quiet, they're probably still asleep," she said finally. Better to seem to have no secrets, it was less suspicious. Scooping her little pink and white boy into gentle jaws, she tuned and, becoming with her tailtip, led the way back the short distance to the den.

Hikari watched with interest as the two adults spoke. Mama wasn't upset anymore, so everything was just fine and dandy with him now. This big person was not like the other one, even though the other one kind of looked like mama. And Jiro. And Kanie too. This one was...brighter. A whooshy color on his feets.

The cub made no sound of protest as he was lifted by his mama, she picked him up all the time and he wasn't the least bit frighted by it. Strangers on the other hand...he didn't know much of strangers at all.

He tumbled over his paws once he was placed in the den, his unmatched eyes looking over his sleeping siblings before turning pitifully to Aiko.

"Mama...bad sleepings..." Hikari whimpered, he'd almost forgotten how frightening the images in his head had been while he was out in the hallway, but now he was back here and it reminded him. He sniffled faintly even as his mama's warm tongue rasped across his skull, the comforting feeling not quite enough to make everything all better just yet. It had been quite upsetting after all.

"I'm glad to hear you're managing."

Mana made an expression which resembled a smile. What he didn't know about cubs and raising them would fill the savanna, and then some. It wasn't an ignorance which bothered him, but if the vogue for the pride was to be pregnant or nursing he supposed he would have to learn something about cubs other than how not to make their mothers angry.

Somehow he'd hoped that he could manage this education without coming into further contact with cubs. Apparently this wasn't going to happen, and so he followed Aiko into her den with just the barest hint of a resigned sigh. At least if he was required to be quiet, he wouldn't be expected to think up further polite compliments about the little balls of fluff.

He didn't make any sound as he entered the space, but his blue eyes scanned the area carefully. He knew now how many cubs Aiko had, and looking for them he recognized one from earlier. The others he had only caught a glimpse of when depositing the dark spotted one in the den. Now he looked at the sleeping cubs more carefully, marking them in his mind so that if he saw any of them in the future, he would recognize them.

He was about to say something to Aiko when Hikari spoke first, saying something about bad sleepings. Even Mana could guess what that meant, and decided it might be a good opportunity for him to take his leave.

"Aiko," he said softly, "I think it best that I leave you to deal with this. Thank you for showing me your cubs. I hope everything works out with them."

Then he took a few careful steps backward and departed. The pride was infested with cubs. He'd have to make excuses to be elsewhere for a while.

Aiko nuzzled her distressed cub, her attention clearly more on her little ones than the extremely handsome cheetah she'd invited back to her den. It was certainly a drastic change of pace for the flirtatious consort. She did like Mana well enough, at least he was one of the people with whom she felt comfortable she knew where she stood. He probably would tell Nyoka, but even if he did suspect the father, and she wasn't so blind as to think her eldest son and youngest daughter looked nothing like the male she hoped it was, well, Aiko wasn't hiding them now. She wasn't being suspicious, so there was no reason to question her or her story. It was a very simple, very believable story after all.

"Alright Mana," she replied quietly as he began to back away, "I apologize for overreacting earlier," Aiko managed to add before he'd vanished from the den. "So, Hikari, what's this about bad dreams?"

The cub lifted his mismatched eyes to Mana when the big stranger mother didn't seem to mind so much anymore spoke. He didn't seem that scary now when he was here with mama in their den. He was still big though, and Hikari wasn't sure if he would be comfortable with him without mother being in the den. But for now he was ok with the stranger.

Not that he was that upset when he left.

"Bad," he insisted when his mama asked him what was wrong. But the words to explain...he just didn't know them. All he knew was that he had been upset...but mama was here now so it was probably going to be okay.
