it was a hot day. Kenton had tried to graze in the meadow, but it was just too hot. he sighed and headed towards the forest. the thick canopy would provide shade and sweet relief from the sun. he walked into the forest and let his eyes adjust. he was not afraid of the darker woods, for he was strong enough to handle attackers. plus he doubted that anything would have enough energy to attack him in this heat.
He walked to a thicker patch of trees and sat in the undergrowth. it was times like these that made him sad. there was nothing to do, and no one to talk to. his life as a herd guard had offered adventure and a sense of meaning. now all he had were the lazy summer days that threatend to drive him mad. he desperatly wish he had something to do, something to accomplish or protect. he wished that there was some meaning in his life. he sighed once again and stared into the darkness of the thick trees, lost in his own thoughts.

A stream gurgled, nearly laughing, through one of the many close copses in the forest. Calixte lay next to the trickling brook, taking refuge from the heat that raged outside of the dark parts of the forest. It was so warm outside that as soon as she stepped outside of the wood, she became thirsty. Not willing to subject her hair to dehydration - or worse, water-burn, if the unpredictable summer weather decided to rain - Calixte stuck to the deep woods in the summertime.
She sighed. The forest, even with its beautiful trees and trilling, carefree birds, could be lonely. She had no choice but to stick close to the deepest part of the trees, and she was isolated and a bit sad. "No one's around to talk to," she sang to herself quietly, listening to her words bounce off the boughs. "And no one's here to listen to me..."
She giggled at herself. "Look at me," she told a squirrel that was sitting on a tree limb nearby. "Singing to myself. You'd think I was mad!" The squirrel did nothing but slowly c**k its head to the side, obviously not understanding her words. And then its ears twitched as if it heard something. Calixte turned her head as the squirrel scurried up the tree and chattered above her.
She heard hoof-steps.

Kenton had began to pace back and forth. he had to do something to keep himself active in the heat. "if im not careful, i will become fat and lazy." he laughed at himself, a rich deep laugh of a mature stag. he found it quite humorous that he was talking to himself. "only crazy people talk to themselves." he stopped and slowly looked around. had he heard something? he pricked his ears up to hear better, but the sound was gone. Kenton turned to the nearest tree and began to rub his antlers on the bark. almost all his velvet was off and the sharp points were poking through. being in the forest made him jumpy. he stopped again and listened hard. there was a sound...like singing?
Kenton turned to the noise. it did not sound threatening, but he had heard stories of treacherous females that sing their prey to their doom. he was not about to be prey. even if the sound did come from an evil being, kenton smiled at the thought of finally having company. he stood in-between two dark trees braced for a fight, but not looking too aggressive. it never hurt to be prepared.

"Hello?" Calixte called to the dim light around her - she could hardly see a thing in such awful light. "Is someone out there?" Her glowing eyes peered into the darkness, hoping for a glimpse at whatever was making hoof-steps.
She heard a voice, then. It was deep - deeper than most. She frowned. Her unknown company was definitely male. She heard what might have been wood scraping against wood. A wee bit frightened, Calixte stood. "Hello?"
A being appeared right in front of her, standing between the trees. She backed up - he was huge, much bigger than she was. It took a minute for her eyes to re-adjust to the light. She sucked in a relieved breath as she saw what he was: just another like her. He had the ears, hooves, and tail, and the antlers that the males of her kind were equipped with. "Good day, sir," she said brightly. Finally, she had some company! "How do you do?"

Kenton relaxed as soon as he saw the Cerynei mare in front of him. she was smaller than him, and very pretty. she almost seemed to shine, or was it a glow? her mane seemed to be like leaves, and she was colored like a fawn, and like a forest.
"why hello miss. i was not expecting to find someone in the woods today. but then again the heat usually drives everyone to look for shade." he smiled at her and relaxed his stance. he could tell already that she ment to harm. it was good to see another Cerynei, it has been so long since he had seen his own kind.
"my name is Kenton, im so happy to have some company. that is unless you are just passing through, or are in a hurry. if this is the case then i will let you go and stop wasting your time." that was one of his biggest pet-peeves, when he needed to be somewhere but someone rudely holds you back and talks your ear off. lately though Kenton was never in a rush, never had anything pressing.

Calixte laughed. "This heat is a bit troublesome, isn't it?" She shook out her mane, a nervous impulse of hers. He was a deep, earthy brown that faded lighter. His deep voice soothed the nerves that had spiked in fear when she'd first seen him.
"I am Calixte. And you have not interrupted my passing or stopped me from going anywhere - I was just laying here, resting." She smiled. "You are very curteous, Kenton. Would you like to stay awhile in the shade? There is a stream to drink from, if you are thirsty." She nodded toward the little copse of trees just behind her. "You may come in if you like; I'll be inside."
Calixte stepped lightly back into her tiny home, careful not to make a lot of noise. Little forest creatures lived in the branches above her head; she did not want to disturb them. She laid back down on the leafy forest floor next to the stream, once again listening to it gurgle.

Kenton nodded and smiled at Calixte as he followed her into the copse. he saw the stream and headed over to its edge. he had not realized how thirsty he was untill he saw the water. he licked his lips and lowered his head to take a small sip. when finished he turned back to Calixte and sighed
"thankyou very much that was quite refreshing." he shuffled his feet, uncomfortably. he wasent the best at starting conversations, but once one was going he could talk all night. he was always afraid of hurting peoples feelings or bringing up bad memories for them, so he usually stayed quiet. "i try my hardest to treat everyone with respect. exspecially mares, they are kind and deserve to be treated kind in return." he smiled and looked around. the trees were nice and he liked the sound of the animals in them. "this is a really nice place you have found."

Calixte watched as Kenton bent down for a drink. He didn't push any mud into the water or step into it. She smiled again when he looked back up. He got along well with nature, and yet, it seemed he was not aware of it. She nearly laughed at his boyish hoof-shuffling, but held it in. To laugh would be cruel. "You are welcome," she said. "I'm glad to be of help."
She listened carefully when he started talking. Raising a brow at his 'kind mares' comment, she said skeptically, "You would be surprised, friend. Not all mares are kind. Quite a few I've met in different lands have been... rather aggressive. You must be one of the lucky few who has not met such a girl. But I do agree - respect and kindness is much appreciated by everyone, and most deserve it."
She sighed happily, looking around her. "It is quite lovely. I stumbled into it during my first day in the forest." Calixte cast a glance at where he was standing nervously. "You may lay down, if you wish, Kenton. And you may call me Cali. I imagine that Calixte is a rather strange name in these lands. Have you been here for very long, or is this land new to you as well?"
She mentally scolded herself, looking at her hooves for a moment. Talking too much again, she internally sighed.

Kenton gratefully lay down. the cool ground felt good against his side. this mare was nice, and he could easily see them being friends. he looked up at her thinking best how to answer her question without a big lengthy answer.
"i am relatively new to these lands. i hail from the Cerynei lands, until the fire that burnt them down. i was luck to not have been in the forest at the time, but seeing my home and herd lost in the fire hurt more than any flame ever could." he looked away with a quick sniffle. it would be quite shameful if he started to cry. he looked back at Cali, composed and continued his story. "i came to these lands looking for a fresh start, but each attempt i made crashed and burned...no pun intended."
he smiled at her. "as of now i am just wandering. sorry for the lengthy tale, but it is hard to not tell the whole thing once i get started." he laughed his rich laugh. "so what about you. i knew you were foreign from your name, but were exactly do you come from?"

Calixte settled quietly as Kenton told his past. She fidgeted a bit. "Kenton," she murmured, a little shocked. "That must have been horrible, coming home to see your home and family gone. I think that trying for a 'new start' might just not be for you, if previous tries have not succeeded... Something as life-changing as that becomes a part of you." She looked blankly at the bubbling stream, her mind on her own past. Birds chirped somewhere off in the distance and reminded her of her old home.
"Me?" she said, a bit startled, even though he was asking because common courtesy required it. "I came from across the sea a few weeks ago from a land called Greece. I was known as a Dryad there." She sighed a little and looked back at him. "I came hoping to make up for the past, but... I don't think it'll happen anytime soon." Cali smiled a bit weakly, not wanting to dwell anymore on that. "So... How long have you been here? Have you met anyone aside from me?"

Kenton thought about what she said and took into consideration. but now was not the time to try and figure out exactly what she meant. he gratefully accepted the change of topics and thought about he question. "im not sure exactly how long ive been here, maybe about a year. sadly i dont really see a lot of people. i will cross paths with a stranger, maybe talk for a little while, but in the end they all have things to do, of families to return to. ive kinda just takes to wandering around.
a squirrel in the tree above ran across a branch and knocked some leaves loose. the leaves landed on kenton's head and he shook them loose of his antlers. he chuckled as he watched the squirrel disappear out of sight. he looked back at Cal and asked her, "how do you like it here?"

Calixte nodded. "Yes, wandering seems to be the past-time of choice around here. You're actually the first I've met in these lands."
She giggled at Kenton when the leaves fell on his head, feeling a bit girlish. She looked up at the squirrel, who was glaring down at them and chittering angrily. "Oh shush, you," she play-growled at it. It leered a little more fiercely and disappeared into the branches, scattering some leaves as it went. They fell on the top of Calixte's head. Laughing some more, she let them lay there for a bit. "Oh, squirrels," she said, sighing. "They love playing but can't take a joke."
"Anyway," she continued, "I think it's very pretty here, though the population in these parts seems to be rather sparse..." She gave him a hopeful look. "You've been here a year? Then... You haven't seen a black stallion with a sea-green mane, have you?" She paused, then looked down, regaining her composure. "I'm sorry, please disregard that. I've just been looking for him - I owe him an apology and I can't find him anywhere."

Kenton noted her hopeful look. she was a nice mare and had a good sense of humor. he wished he had more experiences with mares in regards to love. his mate in the cerynei lands had been a gift to him and they were to help produce strong children. there was no romance in that relationship, but he had respected her and treated her kindly. the first mare he had come across in these lands was eager and not looking for anything lasting, sadly he did not know that until after the children came. Kenton was slowly discovering just how complex and confusing mare could be. he cocked his head as he listened to Cali talk.
"no im sorry i have not meat such a stallion. i have only meat one stallion and he wore a mask, but he had gold markings and a white mane, i doubt its the stallion you speak of." he smiled and respectfully changed the conversation. "so what would be your favorite season here?"

Calixte frowned. "No, I am afraid that is not him. He would not wear a mask... He would find it... Insulting." Calixte smiled weakly. "He has a head on his shoulders that has swollen to the size of some of the mountains here, though I imagine I deflated it some."
She gratefully let Kenton change the subject. If Areion was not in these lands, it could mean only one thing. His ship had yet to make land.
"My favorite season?" Calixte said curiously. "Kenton, I've not been here long enough for a season to pass, though summer does seem quite... Unfriendly, as it were." She shook her leafy mane out a bit, trying to get it off her neck. "This heat is unnatural."

Kenton laughed "yes this heat is something else." he got up and walked over to the stream. he stepped into the cool water and sighed. it felt really nice on his legs. "here, maybe this will help." he turned and kicked at the water, attempting to splash some onto Cali.
