Shells, shells, there had to be shells around here somewhere. Abyss had traveled a good distance from the pack lands in hopes of finding some of those precious objects, as it was clear to her the river there was fresh out of them. Walking along the relatively shallow portion of the river Abyss had her head down, eyes scanning the sandy riverbed for any hint of a shell that could be added to her small collection. It would take much more than the few shells she had found lately to rebuilt her castle. And once she had her castle back she could find her prince charming.

Abyss took great care in how her paws landed in the sand so as to not stir it up too much. Doing so would only ruin the perfect clear water she was in now. Even the frustration of not being able to find shells was washed away by the gentle lapping of the water on her fur. And it would seem that her work was about to pay off as she caught a glimpse of what could be the first good shell all day, dipping her head under the water Abyss went about trying to pick it up without breaking the fragile object or stirring up the silt too much.

User Image Upstream, a blue wolf was gingerly resting on the edge of the bank, his body prostrate within the shallows. He was wounded, although not freshly -- from the sight and smell of it, the long cuts on his flanks were a few days old at least. Still, they pained him, and the cool water of the river brought him some relief.

Kai lowered his head to his paws, resting his muzzle upon the muddy bank, eyes half-closed with pain and exhaustion. He was, as usual, oblivious to the world around him -- but for once, perhaps, he had a good excuse.

With the shell gripped in her jaws Abyss slowly lifted her heard above the waters surface. She had learned a long time ago how to hold her breath for a good long time in order to acquire those hard to grab shells. As the water ran off her fur Abyss started to walk forward, about ready to take the shell to the bank in order to get a better look at it. But she spotted a wolf up ahead who was half laying in the water. That wouldn't do. So Abyss hurried forward, the water pushing back against her did nothing to slow the determined wolfess down.

When she got closer to him she saw the cuts on his flanks and while they didn't look fresh Abyss would not stand for some wolf dirtying up her water. Dropping the shell, she yelled out at him. "Just what are you doing to my sanctuary!" It didn't matter that she wasn't in her packs territory, all water was Abyss' sanctuary.

Maybe it was something about having recently been thoroughly beaten, but Kai was a bit jumpy now about being reprimanded by other wolves. Where once he would have smiled disarmingly and offered a smooth greeting, now the blue wolf bolted upright, nearly falling on his face in his struggle to get onto the bank. He grimaced in pain, turning his attention to the newcomer, rapidly sizing her up for potential threat, and dipped his head in shame. "I'm sorry," he said, eyes downcast. "I didn't know I was in someone's territory. I'll be going, then."

Abyss kept a critical eye on this male as he spoke. He looked to be in pain, and while Abyss knew she should care it was hard to do so when he was so blatantly dirtying the water with his body. "All water is my territory." She explained to him in a somewhat snarky voice. Taking a few steps closer to him while remaining in the water her eyes narrowed a bit. "You will explain what you were doing in my sanctuary before you go running off, you miscreant." The nerve of some wolves thinking they could just get out of a sticky situation without any repercussions.

All water? Now, that ruffled his fur a bit, despite himself. He may well have left the Kapu'Moana lifestyle behind, but the religion was a harder thing to abandon -- and, deep in his heart, he still believed quite strongly in the goddess of the ocean. Unless this odd-looking blue wolf before him was the personification of that very deity, then clearly not all water belonged to her, and the realization emboldened him slightly. "Begging your pardon," he said, with an effort to keep his tone even. "I was merely trying to ease some of the pain in my wounds." He paused, and then, because he couldn't keep it in, "And you can hardly lay claim to all water, everywhere. Unless you were hand-appointed by the Goddess herself, I think all of her children have equal share in it, thanks."

"There must be some other way to ease your wounds. You will dirty the water." Abyss was slowly calming down but damn it he had invaded her sanctuary with his dirty wounds, how could she not take offense to that. None of the wolves in her pack would dare do such a disrespectful thing without incurring her wrath in some way. Even Hero hadn't escaped her harsh words when he wished to help her find shells.

"I do not know of this Goddess that you speak of." Her eyes wanted to narrow but with a lot of effort she stopped them from doing so. "Water is my domain, my life and my soul." Abyss really didn't know why she was explaining these things to this male, but she felt the need to suddenly. "I am the Watery Mistress, who serves the water as much as it serves her."

His brows raised a little. Kapu'Moana had been a superstitious pack, to be sure, but they were often less than spiritual. Their belief in the Sea Goddess had more to do with their personal feelings of superiority than to any particular love of the water itself, although Kai was rather fond of it. He liked swimming, after all, and fishing, and felt very much ill-at-ease when on dry land...but that was due in large part to his comfort level growing up, not really any particular love of the water itself.

This wolf, on the other hand, seemed a little loony. "My apologies again," he said, not eager to incur the wrath of anybody, much less a potential fanatic. "Er...Mistress."

Abyss snorted out a laugh. He was a bit of an odd wolf but there were much weirder wolves in her own pack, like that nut job Pumpkinhead. "Mistress is more of a title than a name." She corrected him as she came out of the river, water running off of her waterproof fur quickly leaving her dry as if she had never been in there. "I am Mysterious Abyss, of the Realm of Light." She finally introduced herself. "And you are?" Best to at least get his name so as to lock into her memory of those who have wronged her and her precious water. Of course she would possibly be willing to forgive his actions if he said the right things.

"Kailani," he said, and winced a little; he was beginning to grow a bit self-conscious of his rather girly name. "But people generally call me Kai. It's...ah...nice to meet you...Mysterious Abyss." He thought that was something of a mouthful, but he thought it wouldn't be very nice to give her an unwanted nickname if she hadn't volunteered one. "Realm of Light?" he glanced around, brow furrowing. "Is this their territory?" Just how many packs were there around here?

"Well Kai, you may call me Abyss." Giving her head a light shake to reposition her string of pearls into the right spot Abyss found a spot a little ways away from Kai where she could sit but keep her fur clean. "No, my pack is quite a distance from here. I came here in search of shells, for the rivers with the pack lands seem to be quite empty of them." She studied him for a few moments before speaking again. "Tell me about this Goddess you spoke of earlier." From what little she had gathered about her already the Goddess was some form of water entity, but she needed more information of such an idea.

He wondered why any wolf would find it necessary to wander so far from home to pick up shells, but decided they must have some sort of particular significance to her, and did not pursue it further. "The Sea Goddess," he said, with a shrug; it had never completely occurred to him how difficult it was to explain his religion to someone who was unfamiliar with it. "She lives in the water and is the giver and taker of life. The wolves in my old pack used to say that she had blessed us, specifically, as her favorite children, and that so long as we were near to water, we would be protected."

Abyss listened carefully as he explained this Sea Goddess to her. And while the explanation was short she did find it somewhat interesting nonetheless. Anything to do with the water was of great importance to Abyss, for she lived for the water, without it she was but a shell of herself. A fitting metaphor she thought before returning her attention to Kai. "An interesting way to look at it. And if you upset her, she would punish you in some ways? Flood, drought or something else perhaps."

Eyes roamed over to the river in front of them, Abyss always felt a little strange when she wasn't within her sanctuary. Dry land just didn't hold much of an appeal to her. "I have dedicated my life to protecting the water within my packs boundaries. For it is essential to our lives." It was very uncommon for Abyss to talk so nicely to anyone, for they usually offended her in some way, but for once she found a subject in common with this wolf before her and it was a refreshing change. None of the wolves in her pack seemed to understand her overprotective nature of the water.

"Something like that," he said, and hesitated a little. In truth, the beliefs of the Kapu'Moana had always seemed to Kai to have less to do with the preservation of the water, and more to do with proving the pervasive superiority of the high-class inhabitants of the cove. Everything about his pack had been self-serving, and that was one of the many reasons he had turned away from that life.

Still, as annoyed as he was with his upbringing, he was in no rush to explain that to this off-putting stranger, and so instead he shrugged and glanced around, casting about for another subject. "Do you eat fish?" He asked then, seemingly very much at random. He smiled in a slightly embarrassed way. "I met someone recently who was the protector of fish."

Abyss cocked at brow at Kai. Eat fish? She had to think back in an attempt to remember if she had ever attempted to eat some of those slippery creatures that lived within her sanctuary. "No," she said after a moments pause. "I don't think I have ever eaten fish." Admittedly Abyss disliked doing anything that would upset the balance of nature within the water, which was why she was always careful about which shells she removed from the river. "Do you?" She asked though Abyss was pretty sure that he did given what little he had told her of his background.

"A protector of fish? That's an odd thing." Why would anyone go out of their way to protect those creatures? Sure Abyss was mindful of them while in the water, never wanting to disturb then if it could be avoided. But sometimes the little buggers wouldn't get away from a shell she wanted and therefore was forced to give them a nudge in the right direction.
