Keena yawned, her forepaws kneading the moist earth as she stretched, then shook herself briskly, scattering any water that remained from her light fur. The chill of the night still lingered, not yet burned away by the warmth of the sun, but not so cold as to be uncomfortable for someone with a good insulation of fur. Her tail curling lightly, the smallish lioness padded over to the river to lap up a quick drink, ridding her tongue of that early-morning taste. Her fur needed a quick going over, just to put it in enough order that she didn’t look a total mess, nothing near the beauty treatment she was certain some people went though on a daily basis.
Satisfied that she didn’t look as though she’d been rolling in mud, which was fortunate because in spite of last night’s drizzle she didn’t recall doing such a thing anyway, Keena rose to her feet and began to make her way off, following her paws wherever they might decide to lead her. Her pale ears perked at the faint traces of birdsong lingering in the trees, and a small smile spread across her features. Each day was a lovely thing, wasn’t it? So much promise. Places to see, people to meet, things to do and learn…
It was such a beautiful world she walked through. A world of sunkissed color and rain soft earth. So fresh it smelled, after a rain. The grass more green, the earth loamy and mutedly crisp. Like springtime or something. All washed new. A good day for something to begin, Keena thought to herself as she padded along one of the many paths through the lands she'd traveled most of her life. So many journeys, and she'd still not seen them all. Perhaps she never would, but even so there was something to be said for the travels. It wasn't where she was going that counted after all, it was how she was going and who she met on the way.

This lioness' morning hadn't begun nearly as nicely as Keena's had. Sauda had been awake for several hours; belly empty and grumbling in protest of her hunger. She'd set off to hunt early, hoping to catch something before it had the chance to become fully awake and aware. Prey large enough to fill her up, even if she had to leave a great deal for the scavengers.
It had been difficult, bringing down a gazelle on her own. The lioness had paid for it with two kicks from the animal; though thankfully she'd tried to dodge fast enough to keep herself from being hit square with a hoof. Her right foreleg ached from the now dead animals' last attempts to gain freedom, but she had brought it down.
And now she could finally eat.
Not far from where Keena had set off, Sauda began her feast eagerly. She ate fast; for fear of someone coming across her and chasing her off. She hadn't the strength to fight for her meal if it came down to it, she knew she'd have no choice but to limp away and be thankful for whatever she got before then.

It wasn't long before Keena caught sight of the lioness, and caught a whiff of her meal. Her own stomach informed her that it could stand to eat right about now, but she told it to be polite. It wasn't as though she were starving, she was more than capable of scrounging up something for herself. But what was harder to find was company, and so she approached the other lioness with a bit of caution. She was hoping to meet a new friend, and didn't want to scare her off by mistake.
"Good morning," she called brightly when she was still a few lengths away. Close enough to say hello, far enough not to seem an immediate threat. That anyone took her for a threat still amazed the lioness, she was a bit smaller than average but that was hardly the reason. She had no desire to bother anyone, much less upset or hurt them. It hurt when people reacted as though expecting harm from her.
