Hey everyone! Sorry for my absence lately, I've been quite busy. But I thought I'd share the news with you! I've been accepted for a position for an internship from the Student Conservation Association! I'm leaving Thursday, January 12th to head to Barstow, California to work in the Mojave Desert until May. I will be with a crew to do habitat reconstruction for the desert tortoise in the desert (imagine that!). This will include vertical mulching, replanting dead plants for camouflage, and planting seeds for new plants. We will be camping in the desert for 8 to 10 days at a time. I'm so excited and can't wait to start!
I'll have internet access while I'm there (and not out in the desert), so I'll be sure to check in from time to time to let you guys know what's going on!

Oooo. Congrats, Ailinea! It sounds like you're going to learn a lot and have a great time. I hope this is the start of an exciting environmental career for you. Say "hi" to the bats for me. xd

Oh! Do you get to work with the Desert Research Institiute that is training dogs to search for Desert Tortoises? If so, I work with the dog trainer that trained the handlers and their dogs for it! I wanted to run my dog through, but I know she would pick up a tortoise, and I also have absolutely no time whatsoever to go do it.

Well, today I arrived at my home in Barstow, and so far everything is great. All of my housemates are friendly and made me feel very welcome.
Today we went to a place called Rainbow Basin and climbed up to the top of the hill to watch the sunset. The sunset is so pretty in the desert! The only thing is it's really not as warm as everyone may think it would be in the desert; it's actually pretty cold. But I'm sure it'll warm up.
So far the only problem I've had is that everyone in the whole house is thinner and more physically fit than I am. I was winded after climbing the hill, and everyone else was just fine. I've come to determine that regardless of how physically and emotionally exhausting this may get, I am going to try to get myself through it, and I feel like I'm here for a reason. The slogan for the SCA is "Working to change lives through nature." I've been told that this internship will more than likely change my life, so I am ready for it. I know there will be hard times, being the "fat person" of the group, but I'll handle it the best I can, and just be myself. Just wish me luck.
My first hitch is tomorrow, so I'm going to get ready and sleep and ask questions. I'll keep in touch with guys when I get back, which won't be for about a week and a half. So yeah. Thanks for being so supportive through this!
I'll be sure to inform the rest of you guys with your questions when I get back. ^_^
