Xanti was asleep, lying in the middle of the vast acres of flowers and grass that covered the clearing. It was a typical summer day, with the yellow sun beating down on the land, unhindered by any type of clouds. It was gorgeous, the butterflies were out, the birds were chirping, and the closest body of water was so far away that Xan could barely even hear it. For once, Xan was completely content, relaxed and satiated, after having taken down a small field deer not too long ago. The remains of which still lay in close proximity, with enough meat to provide another meal or two for Xan when he woke up. The rest of its herd had moved off, now only small dots on the horizon, leaving behind the predator which had reduced their numbers by one.
Eyes closed, breathing heavily, Xan was somewhat dead to the world. Even his ever-twitching ears seemed to be moving at a slower pace than usual; occasionally tracking the little twittering birds, but not really sending much information on to his brain. Every now and then Xan would grit his teeth and give off muted snarls, either fighting off dream demons or attempting to catch his sleep induced prey.

A kalona alone was dangerous enough as it is, but a hungry kalona was far worse! Using her keen nose, Vera carefully stalked the clearing, looking for something that could possibly quell her hunger. Now, the large mare would prefer a meal of a stag or even a lesser if she can find one, but will settle for a smaller morsel, albeit slightly reluctantly.
As she ventured deeper into the clearing, the scent of blood wafted into her nostrils. It seems that something was killed nearby. It was tempting, but did she dare take a kill from some thing or one else? Her choice would depend on who made the kill. If it was a wolf, fox, or something small like that, it would be an easy snag. Another kalona, or one of those skinwalkers, she would more than likely go find a meal of her own, not being up to much of a fight today. With that, she walked in the direction the attracting 'aroma' came from.
After some time, Vera came across the kill, but something was off. What she saw lying next to it wasn't anything what she was expecting. It wasn't a predator like a wolf, it wasn't another kalona, nor was it a skinwalker. It was some sort of mutated lessor. Hmm... how odd. She thought, not knowing of any other species that ate meat, but sure enough, there was the half eaten carcass right beside it. Curious, but mostly hungry, she stalked closer to this 'creature' and its kill.

Xanti chased the rabbit as it raced through the forest, narrowly avoiding the trees and bushes in its way. It was fast, but he was gaining, its ability to swerve away from Xan’s jaws the only thing protecting it from death. That is until it swerved one too many and ended up against a rock face. It had nowhere to go and Xan immediately pounced, ripping into the soft flesh and –
Xan woke up abruptly. Startled. He immediately gained his feet and glanced around, looking for the rabbit. After a moment it all came back to him, probably due to the fresh smell of blood and meat that permeated the area. He was in the clearing with his latest kill, a small deer.
What he didn’t remember was the shaded green-blue Kalona mare that was slowly approaching. She was a predator, with sharp metal talons and a fierce demeanor, yet Xan didn’t really grasp the significance of this, so focused was he on his primal instincts; which were screaming at him to protect what was his.
It wants my kill was the only coherent thought Xan managed to form before he charged, snarling, towards the powerful looking Kalona.

Vera stopped in her tracks when she saw the other startle awake and eventually stand to its feet. Well, there goes stealing the carcass. She thought with a snort. The kalona knew when and when not to use her energy. Fighting for a half eaten carcass would not be a wise use of this energy... and a waste of time. As much time it would take to fight and wrestle the small meal from the odd lesser, she could easily catch a full meal for herself.
But apparently, the other didn't know or share in this belief, as she now spotted the lesser charging toward her. Snorting again, she stood her ground. Her wings opened threateningly as she lowered her head, as if preparing to possibly use her horns as the claws over her hooves dug into the dirt as the other drew nearer.

The sleep confusion began to where off as Xan charged towards the Kalona; who was making a show of looking threatening, with her wings outstretched and her horns lowered. She was definitely not one of those weak, frail mares that he sometimes came across. He slowed his headlong rush, but proceeded to trot towards her, teeth bared. He still figured that she had been there for his kill. The smell of it had probably drawn her, as it would most meat-eaters. Not that Xan had had that intention when he killed the deer.
The slower pace also gave him time to consider his options. He didn’t need to kill her for food; he was full enough as it was... but he wasn’t about the share either.
Well...maybe I can just chase her off?
He wasn’t really interested in seriously injuring her. She wasn’t a stallion. But in order to chase her off he’d have to frighten her a bit. The most logical way to do that would be to aim for her weak spot. Not that there seemed to be very many weak spots on her, she was pretty solid looking. Only her fragile leather wings prevented her from being the perfect fighting creature. Slightly impressed despite himself, Xan tentatively approached. It wasn’t until he was in striking distance, that he lunged at the mare. Aiming for her left wing with his jaws.

Lessers may not be as grand as kalonas, but at least some of them had some sense. Seeing the stallion's speed slow down, Vera cautiously lifted her head, but didn't drop her guard. She shorted and growled, showing her own fangs in response to his own bared teeth.
Okay, maybe he wasn't too smart after all. She thought, pretty sure that he would have stopped advancing by now. Instead, he just continued to come closer to her. The large mare's bright orange eyes watched him leeringly with every of his steps. At his attack, she was actually caught by surprise, but rather than reeling back, she just curled her wing away from him and retorted. A silver blur flashed through the air in front of his muzzle. Hidden behind her for the most of their 'encounter', at the end of her tail, was a sharp metal blade. She had slashed her spaded tail in front of him in response to his attempt to injure her, so even if she had managed to miss slicing his muzzle, there was the possibility of him having a mouthful of sharp metal. Even if that didn't happen either, at least now, he had another warning to stay back.
"Very bold for a Lesser... or very stupid," she hissed, "I'm thinking the latter."

Xan snorted and drew back.
The metal blade, her tail, had neatly sliced the bridge of his nose. He had moved forward right into it during his lunge. The cut was clean, thin and deep. Blood immediately ran down his muzzle, making little rivulets down to his lips. He unclenched his jaws and ran a large, pink tongue over his snout, effectively licking off most of the blood. It reappeared seconds later, but he didn’t seem too perturbed by it. His action seemed more like a reflex then an intentional movement. His attention was solely focused on the Kalona.
“This is my meat. My kill. Do not presume to come and steal it from me. I will not tolerate it; however inferior and stupid you might consider me to be.” His words were a low growl. Dangerously sharp, but not filled with anger. Just warning. He had noted her tail and claws; knew that she was better equipped to fight him then he was her. But that would not stop him from attacking again if she showed any signs of dominance. She could believe that she was better than him all she wanted, but if she thought that he would think the same she was dead wrong. He would never, never submit to another without being given a good reason to. And so far, that hadn’t happened.

The bladed spade continued to slash through the air some as the male pulled back. She eyed the slice she made over his muzzle. When the dark red fluid started to dribble from the wound, a toothy grin formed on her lips. Her own tongue slipped out and ran over a fang. Yes, his may be a bit bigger, but hers served their purpose.
It was when he started to 'rant' about the kill that she quirked a brow at him. Letting out a small 'tsk', she replied 'calmly', in a surprisingly pure voice. "Weren't you ever taught no to make assumptions? You have no official proof that I am here to take your 'precious' kill." In all honesty, initially she was attracted by the kill, but she soon changed her mind. Orange eyes scanned the odd stallion one more time. He may not look like much, but he was bold... which, sometimes, can be more problematic than sheer strength or skill. She will have to watch herself.

Xanti cocked his head to the side and stared at her with his pupil less orbs. Slightly confused by her contradictory looks and words.
“You are a well equipped killing machine…and a Kalona. Are you telling me you are a grass eater? I find that hard to believe. ” Impossible was more like it. He had noted her fangs, had noted her interest in his cut. Thinking of the cut, Xan ran his tongue once more over his muzzle to ensure that no more blood was leaking out, before peeking over his shoulder at the carcass. No scavengers had moved in yet, which was a miracle.

The mare gave him a questioning look when he seemed to stare at her. At his comment, she chuckled softly, tail giving another slash through the air. "Pfft... I never said that I didn't eat meat. I'm just saying that I didn't come here to take your kill." She answered simply, as if being called a possible 'grass eater' didn't bother her. She then added, "if I was hungry, I would hunt for my own food."

“Ahhh I see” Well he didn’t, but no need to tell her that. “So…what are you doing so far out in the clearing?” Xanti was starting to relax now. He was alert, ears still swiveling around to detect intruders but not nearly as intense as he was moments before. Now that she had clearly stated that she wasn’t after his kill he wasn’t nearly as aggressive. More willing to talk and less willing to attack. But he was curious about her. Where had she come from...and why was she so cool and calm for a Kalona?

Her fight instinct also calmed as the stallion seemed to settle down, but she still kept her guard up, just in case. She tossed her mane lightly as she looked off into the distance, looking to him from the corner of her eyes when she questioned why she was here. She snorted, "Honestly, I am searching for food... but don't get me wrong, I have no interest in your half eaten snack over there. I can catch my own." She reassured him, on the off chance he might question her previous statement of not wanting his food. "But why does it matter to you? Am I not supposed to be here?" She questioned. The kalona mare did not care if she had 'permission' to be here or not, she went wherever she damn well pleased.

"It doesn't matter, not particularly. So long as you aren't interested in my meat I don't care where you wander. Just thought you may have spotted something more interesting nearby." Xanti's tone was neutral, as his thoughts had wandered to the herd of the small deer from which he had killed his latest victim. He wondered if they were still in the near vicinity. That deer had been especially tender and although Xanti had some meat and the bones to chomp up, he was already craving more.
"Hrmmm" He flicked his tongue once more over his muzzle and glanced back at the kill. Then to the mare. Then to the kill. Then to the mare, finally reaching a decision. "Shall we go catch something then?" His gruff voice was tinged with excitement. He was eager to find that herd of grass-eaters, ready for the taking.

She looked at him through the corners of her eyes. "It sure doesn't seem that way, with all your questions." She commented with a small snort. Her bladed tail continued to slash through the air. Her attention moved to the extra appendage that hung behind her, when she caught sight of a crimson color on the edge of the blade. With that, she turned her head as she held her tail out and licked the blood from the spade. After it was cleaned, she returned her attention back to the stallion, where he seemed to be pondering something.
At his offer to go on a hunt of some kind, she quirked a brow. First, he wanted her away from his kill, now he seemed to be welcoming her to catch another kill with him. She had to think about that, but it wasn't that hard of a decision. It would showcase his skills in hunting and it will give her the chance to gather a kill of her own. So, with that determined, she gave a shrug. "Sounds interesting. Why not." She replied with a small hiss, smoke coming from her nostrils.

Xanti nodded, enthused by the thought of more fresh meat. He looked at the kalona for a moment, before turning his back on her and heading towards the deer carcass. The flies had moved in but that didn't phase Xan as he tore into the leftovers. A few quick bites later, he had devoured enough to satisfy him but not bloat him. He needed energy not extra weight and lethargy to slow him down. Of course that meant there was still some left. He looked at it and growled under his breath. "It will be worth it. It will be worth it." Xanti internally chanted. Sharing his kill agitated him, but the promise of meat in the future would be worth it.
Xanti glanced back at the mare and licked the blood of his lips. He moved a couple steps away from the carcass and pointedly looked off into the distance, away from her and it. He surveyed the horizon and scented. Catching the brief scent of deer upon the scanty wind. They were off to the left, small dots on the horizon.
