The heat of the summer was on them. A heat wave had flooded the area and it seemed all the plants were shriveling under the sun's rays. In an effort to escape the sweltering heat, Lera and her part had moved deep into the thicket parts of the forest, hoping that some moisture had escaped. Lera laid her old body on the cool soil under a towering pine. She rubbed her face on the cool earth, her legs entirely sprawled out. Her pack mate, Larcque, sat diligently beside her as if she was a bodyguard. She tried to show no signs of weakness from the heat, but Lera could tell that just sitting there was draining. "Why don't you lay down? It feels better." Taking this as a command Larcque laid down and let out a deep breath. Lera had sent North on a hunting mission and threatened to chew of his ears if he didn't come back with anything. Lera smiled to herself, imagining her grandson trying to hunt, especially with his winter coat still intact.

Lera was still brooding over her encounter with the wolf named Krog the previous day, and replayed her vision over and over in her head again. A dark wolf's presence always seemed to loom over them. She knew it was Isaac. Lera hoped she wasn't becoming delirious.

"Have I ever told you about the story of the crows?" Lera asked Larcque, but she got no response. Instead, Lera heard the dark she wolf's slow breathing... "Ah, you fell asleep on me," Lera whispered, enjoying the serenity of the afternoon. It was always quietest before the storm.

Venda had the barest grasp of herself now, she could manage mild control over her abilities, but not all the time. She flopped down near a trickling stream and buried her muzzle under the water letting it wash over her tongue. Her stomach growled and her head throbbed in agony, she had 'seen' so much today and now she just wanted the peace of darkness. How hateful to wish for her blindness to take over her supernatural sight. When she had been blinded all she wanted was to see again, now that she saw things all she wanted was to be blind again.

"So much..." She lifted her head away from the water and licked her lips with a soft sigh. Life was terribly cruel, but not just to her it seemed. She had seen so many fights and blood and strange wolves she had never even met or seen a glimpse of. Her ability seemed to delve far into the past or future never able to fully focus on the present. She had seen pups born and it tore at her heart to know that she was alone in the world. She had seen wolves die and that too hurt because she knew she might never even meet them or perhaps was already to late to warn them.

Lera smiled to herself, content to rest across from Larcque in the shade. Her ear twitched contentedly as she stretched all the way to her tippy toes. The old she wolf let out a sigh, not truly paying attention to what was around her. But she found she couldn't sleep. Someone was out there... someone was being tormented. Lera raised her head and quietly rose to her feet, not even bothering to shake the dirt off of her side. It would awaken Larcque, anyway.

Her mind reached out, acting as a radar. There, not very far away, was a wolf trapped within herself so to speak. Her mind was on fire, racing, pounding furiously. Distraught, dazed and confused. Lera immediately recognized this... she had been like this once before. The birth of a new seer.

Her golden eyes scanned the forest before moving forward. Her pale skin hung loosely on her frame as her long shaggy fur rippled. Her joints, not yet arthritic, moved mechanically as Lera propelled herself forward. The forest became less dense, and the smell of water permeated the air. A small stream moved through the area, and Lera walked into it to cool her pads. There, downstream, was a dark she wolf practically collapsed on the ground. Burning up? Lera asked this mentally to see just how much this young wolf was in agony, mentally, and probably physically in the hot sun. Be careful not to let your blood boil.

Voice! A voice, but not a vision, instead this was clear and crisp in her mind almost like one of her own thoughts. She quickly shoved herself up onto wobbly legs and inhaled trying to get a better idea if anyone was near. Her mind whirled into confusion and visions trying to find an image of the voice, but she staggered as her brain twisted itself in confusion. There were no more eyes, the optic nerves tried to work but couldn't being severed. Her brain was reaching for what wasn't there and some magical ability was stepping up and showing her things she had never seen before.

Lera moved even closer to the young wolf. Had she look this deranged at the advent of her new powers? She remembered being completely overwhelmed and confused, her head felt as if a boulder had fell on it, and her whole body ached as if it was caught on figure. But she had been led by her best friend at the time to an old seer known as Lewain, who taught Lera how to control her abilities. However it wasn't long after before the crazed Isaac had killed off her teacher. Ironic how she now found herself in Lewain's place. Lera was probably the same age as Lewain had been. Perhaps Isaac would come for her life in the night? Unlikely.

Lera's mind was cool and collected. It was as if she was an undisturbed poor of water, while Venda's was like a trashing torrent of waves. It seemed the dark she wolf's eyesight had been impaired, but whether physically or from the visions, Lera did not know. "Child," Lera said in her most gentle voice, mimicking Lewain's, "your mind is weak, now... but it will grow strong in time." Lera came close to the staggering female. Lera's mind began to delve into Venda's. It was easy, mostly because of the uncontrolled chaos. She could see everything the dark she wolf was seeing, uncontrollable flashes of the future. Lera preferred to work with the past. However, it did not overwhelm the old wolf, and slowly began to form a picture in Vaden's mind, an image so strong it would quiet the visions. Child, you must be still, Lera echoed in her mind, the image appearing as Lera herself, as a young wolf, in the middle of a grassy field. It would be effective to temporarily contain Venda's visions and help communicate with her.

((yeah, I def just dug up Lera's old seer quest))

Venda tried to focus she tried to be calm as she recognized an ability like her own. It was another wolf one who was skilled, not like Adam the young male who had found her. She was unable to keep a flash of him from shooting through her mind his mismatched and wild pelt and then she was in his nightmares seeing goblin shapes and fire red eyes. Blood, so much blood as pups were thrust into the world, and then her mind tore away from those images. She focused on the one Lera provided for her, a young wolf in a field. It was a pleasant image, but slowly it too faded. She could not keep a grasp on it and she saw another wolf who bore faint resemblance to Lera.

"Who-" She started to ask but then cried out her teeth grinding as the vision moved by at a quick blur, Hussan and Naib, two wolves she had never met yet she saw them crystal clearly now as they moved together laying down near a squirming mass of pups. Her heart ached and slowly the vision receded leaving her panting. Legs trembled weakly under her gaunt frame as she lowered herself down.

This dark wolf's mind was phasing constantly, switching from vision to vision, and it wasn't long before the projected image quickly gave way to another vision. This was one she knew however- she had seen it herself. Her son, Hussan, and his mate Naib, who Lera had never met, with their new family. Lera chuckled to herself, I see you have seen my grandchildren, her voice still calm and gentle in nature. As the vision left as quickly as it came, the old she wolf watch the young one collapse onto the ground, her legs giving way under a heavy mind. Lera could feel every heavy breath, the great exhaustion that swept through Venda's mind.

Lera, once standing in front of Venda, moved to her side and laid down next to her, pressing her thin frame against the white fur pelt. My name is Leradien, she spoke in Venda's mind, her soft voice ebbing the images of blood away.

Pain, so much pain, but she felt the other she wolf lay beside her, it was a comfort. She had been away from her kind for so long, barely existing at the edges of even the lones. Bombarded by visions and blinded she never thought she would manage to find a home again or a family. She desperately wished she could go back, back to that fateful day when she had wanted to be kind to a stranger. The headaches had been bad, even then, but never visions...never like this. She had found a huddling frightened wolf on the rocky coast and with bright green eyes full of compassion she had tried to help him escape. So foolish, if she had only continued on her way ignoring the pitiful whimpers she might still have her true sight, her eyes, and these visions might never have come.

"I..." She started before sighing and letting her mind reach out to the other female. I am Venda...thank you, for your kindness. Your grandchildren...are- were?-Will be beautiful... She let out a frustrated half snarl angry with herself for not knowing what was past, present, and future. She hated seeing things to come, and she hated even more that she never saw herself, what was to become of her?

"You are safe now, child," Lera cooed as her own mind waded through the ocean of Venda's mind, sifting through memories and visions alike. Trying to discern which were her own and which were the prediction for other wolves. Her mind was growing calmer now. Lera watched as a memory flickered in the young wolf's mind, like a bright light. Another wolf, the cliff... her eyesight. Ah, so your vision has left you? Lera said, I'm sure your strong heart will make up for its absence. She smiled. Lera enjoyed playing the role of a mother, a teacher, an elder. It was a part of her that had been hidden during her younger years when she was brash and hot tempered. Coming to understand the world as it truly was. Throughout her life, and the many wolves through which she lived vicariously, Lera had become wise, and she reveled in her own wisdom. She liked being old.

The idea of small pups wriggling at the wolf named Naib was like a small dark cloud over Lera's head. She just prayed that blue fur didn't show itself in this litter. That would foreshadow something very bad, indeed. Lera kept these thoughts hidden from Vaden and merely answered sweetly, Thank you.

She looked at the female, her eyes unfocused and looking straight ahead. You will become a strong seer, she noted.

At that moment bushes behind to two females began to rustle and out popped North, Lera's grandson. His physique was large and bulky, and his pelt was intermingled with long winter fun, making him look like quite a mess. "I found food!" he mumbled over a fat rabbit clenched between his jaws. Lera shot him a fierce glare, her grandson was so clumsy. North immediately fell quiet, his large body shrinking to the ground, his tail tucking between his legs. The elder Lera had total control over him. "Oh..." he whispered when he saw the strange dark female beside Lera, "...sorry."

Venda nodded softly her mouth parting but no sound coming out, instead another brief vision of the past. A younger, healthier looking Venda approaching a sunny colored male, a cruel feline voice from behind, and then the bright yellow male lunging at her, blood, and pain, her eyes gouged out by the wolf she had sought to help. The briny taste and sting of saltwater and then two wolves standing over her, one as dark as a storm and the other pink and soft. The vision faded and she buried her head between her paws. Not lost...taken

She had taken a long time to simply come to terms with being blind, the humans had wrapped the disgusting looking sockets with a blindfold so she wouldn't frighten them. They had fed her and pet her and called her 'perra' but she was't a perra, she was Venda. She had left the humans and returned to the forest, and then the visions had come. Her nose twitched and her ears perked, her loss of sight had sharpened her other senses.
"Who?" She murmured softly leaning a bit more into Lera already trusting her a bit, if only for her kindness, and because she knew that Lera understood.

Her stomach growled audibly as she caught the scent of fresh rabbit and her tongue darted over her lips. She wouldn't try and take it though, it only made her determined to fight past her pain and go find her own meal. She couldn't just lay down and die, though she had often considered doing just that, but the survival drive was far stronger then mere self pity. Lera had said she would be a strong seer someday, if the new male hadn't come she would have asked what it meant. Was she going to suffer more? Why her? She wasn't special and she didn't know any of the wolves who's futures she saw, one or two she had bumped into later, mostly because she had wanted to find them. She wanted to help others, keep them from pain by warning them, but already she could see how fruitless it would be to try and burden herself with such an enormous task.

Ahh I see, Lera said. She didn't even have to dog for her past, the memories came so freely. She was more polite than that anyway. Your life has been hard. Lera looked to North who was sitting embarrassed, on the treeline. She looked to him and motioned for him to bring her the kill. He looked unwilling to give up his dinner, but one look at the pitiful she wolf left him no choice. He felt bad for her, and counted his own blessings. He walked over, head hanging low, and brought the rabbit in front of Venda. This is my grandson, North. She spoke loud enough in ehr own mind so that North would be able to hear it too.

"Hi," he answered quietly. He shifted his weight uncomfortably, not quite sure whether to lay down or sit up or just leave them alone. He wondered if Lera would be angry with him later for interrupting.

"This is Venda," Lera told North, "she is like me." North understood this. Venda was a seer, just like his grandmother. He could tell from the pained expression on her face- and perhaps the missing eyes- that she had been through quite a lot. He cleared his throat, and took his place on the opposite of Venda. He was just close enough for them to touch elbows. Any more than that, he thought he might come off as rude.

Your mind is wild, now... but you will tame it, like I have. Lera said.

Yes, but no harder the others now I see...I took something for granted for so long...when I should have been more grateful. She didn't take anything for granted anymore, just the ability to feel the ground under her paws was a blessing. She knew that what had happened to her could have been the end, she could have easily died that day, but she hadn't. She liked to think there was a happy ending for her out there, but if there was she hadn't seen it...and she had seen so much.

"Hello..." She murmured softly her voice a bit strained from lack of proper use, she had been alone too long. Her nose twitched again as she heard the soft plop of what was no doubt the meal he had caught. "Oh, thank you, but I couldn't, you eat." She almost bit her tongue trying to be polite. Her stomach urged her to chow down on the rabbit before it was gone. A wolf trying to blindly hunt was a pretty pathetic sight, more nights them most she just went without.

"It's nice to meet you." She forced a smile past the pain, her head felt like it was caught in a vice, but at least everything was dark again, it helped. I just wish I could make the pain go away... She sighed softly.

The gifts of a seer was a curious thing. There was no set of rules to which the powers obeyed. They mostly ran wild until their container could learn to control them. Some considered their abilities precious, while others through them a burden. Some saw the future while others saw the past. For Lera, her visions normally involved herself and her family rather than the other inhabitants of the forest. For Venda, it seemed the opposite was happening. Her mind was hurdling through, who knew how many years into the future. Lera wish she could promise this burdened wolf with a kind future, but her visions came and went so freely that Lera could not summon one up. Besides, the future was such an uncertain thing. It had a tendency to change. The future is never absolute, as Lera often came to discover.

She was about to insist she eat the rabbit, but North interjected before she could. "Y-You need your strength," he stammered, "I can catch more later." Lera's brows rose, surprised at the grandson's selfless act. She smiled at him in acknowledgment, but he looked away embarrassed. North was not used to such kind gestures from his normally crabby grandmother.

Lera's brows knit together as she listened to Venda's thoughts. It will never get better if you simply wish for it. You must work hard, young seer. Lera paused for a moment. Let me share some of my memories with you.

---

Venda's inky mind would slowly glow with hazy images. Yet as the haze fade, moving images clearly played as if they had been memories from yesterday. These memories were from the eyes of Lera. Cold and heavy paws moved through thick snow, her heart beating heavily, senses sharp as the frozen air sung her nose. There in the distance: a young deer, equally frozen from the winter. A chase, and then calamity. As Lera lunged she saw herself through her prey's eyes; teeth drawn, jaws agape. One reflection blurred with another. Absolute panic struck herself, and she fell to the ground as the deer galloped off. A masculine voice could be heard in the distance as a purple figure approached- but before the face was recognizable the memory faded. This had been Lera's first encounter with her powers. The image quickly faded into a new scene.

Terrible headaches. Lera's eyes rolled as she made her way from the forest. Everything was bright, and every noise pounded in her ears like two boulders smashing together. Her breathing was heavy, her throat dry, her stomach hungry. However, visions did not flash in her mind as Venda's did- but she was overwhelmed with voices in the forest. So many screaming, howling, chatty wolves in her eyes. Lera's eyes watered from the pain as the forest began to go black... she let out a cry and a sob as rain began to fall on her back. Why.

The vision faded again. Lera was running through the forest, her head pounding as much as ever. In front of her, the same purple wolf from an earlier vision, and to her side a very beautiful ashen she wolf with green marks on her face. Amongst the pain, a tinge of jealousy was tangible. She ran and ran, her paws numb from the ground- but nothing was comparable to the buzzing in her head. A flash- Lewain, her savior, appeared. An old, silver she wolf with the most gentlest of voices. Her soft and elderly eyes looking at Lera with concentration.

Days began to flash as the memories in Venda's head jumped from one to another.
Training with Lewain was a daily process. It consisted mostly of meditating with the old wolf, and looking into one's self. Lera found that by being around the old seer allowed her much comfort. She probably wasn't aware of it at the time, but Lewain was probably manipulating her mind in the kindest way to allow Lera's powers to blossom. Lewain helped block off the voices, the visions, until she herself could control them. It was a slow process and she spent much time with Lewain, and stayed in her lands for many moons. The purple male and gray female always watching. Lera grew confident in herself, and she had become a novice seer. No longer did her head ache.

But before Lera could even enjoy a quiet moment- disaster struck. One morning she found Lewain's body in her den. Bloody. Murdered. Rage swelled in her chest as a snarl ripped from between her teeth. Pupils dilated. This vision flashed to another. Lera ripping open a blue wolf's knee.

---

Lera cut off the memories there. She had not meant to go so far, but she had become momentarily nostalgic and had become caught up in the past. She found herself doing this often. That is my story, Lera said- of course it was somewhat abbreviated, I can help you, if you would like, to control your powers until you can do so yourself. Lera's golden eyes looking at the black wolf with the green mask. She was close to Hussan and Naib now, within a day's travel. When the puppies would be born she would travel to them. But for now, she had time to kill. North Laid his weary head between his paws. Finally- no more traveling.

This time when North spoke a fuzzy image of him slowly formed in her mind, the wolf standing against the blackness of her vision. The image sharpened slowly, clearing until she could see every detail, and then slowly it blurred back until everything was dark again. She hoped it was North she had seen, she hadn't concentrated on his voice exactly, but in the back of her mind she had been trying to match voices to faces since she had lost her eyes. Gratefully she dipped her muzzle, if she hadn't been so hungry his kindness might have been easier to refute.

"Thank you..." She murmured again and started on the rabbit, she tried not to tear into it at least. Her stomach clenched in eager anticipation of a good meal. When had one rabbit come to constitute a good meal? She who had once crouched in wait, sharp green eyes focused on her prey, powerful long limbs racing and leaping, and mighty jaws taking down a doe. Now she was weaker, thinner, her sure-footedness was gone completely. It was humbling, though that was just a kind way of saying she was completely humiliated by what she had been reduced to. How eagerly the lone wolf had searched for friends and family, how ready she was to help others, how badly she had wanted a family. It seemed none of her original desires had truly changed, only her hope her spirits now weren't high and content, but crushed low.

Still Lera's offer to share piqued her curiosity and she opened herself to the older seer. Perhaps she opened herself a bit to wide for she felt what Lera had felt, she saw the other wolves as crisp and clear as if she had known them her whole life. When Lewain was slain she felt the aching in her heart and the fury at the flash of blue. She sat back a bit disoriented as the memories faded and turned her head towards Lera. Thank You...for sharing, it gives me hope that I can still overcome this

And then the offer came, for help, for companionship, two things she desperately desired, needed even. If you could, if you would... She had no words to express her gratitude her desire. I'll find someway to repay you someday... She finally offered, it was all the promise she could give. She knew that she often saw things, things about other wolves, she had seen Lera's grandchildren. Maybe someday she would see more of them, see a way to help them, or at least try.
