It had started. That familiar feeling of another life stirring within and this time, the feeling brought even more joy to the expectant mother than ever before.
This was to be her first clutch with her recently vowed life-mate, Mourning Fog, and the first physical symbol of their new life together.
Life-Pulse was not yet plump with child, but her sides were beginning to widen, and though the little ones could barely stir and even then not really of their own accord, she could feel them growing and she could feel their warmth.
She had been making a small trek over to where her nest used to be, but upon making it there, realised that there was nothing to take with her. So, she had dragged her nest out from under the trees and left it out in the open for some other creature of the swamp to make use of. Having done that, she began making it back towards where they had decided they were going to have their den. A few days had passed since she last saw Mourning Fog, but she knew once she found him once more they would never be apart again.
She nudged some branches out of her way as she made it to the decided area, but when she got there and looked around, she couldn't see her beloved anywhere. So she stood still (apart from her tail twitching back and forth), and called out for him. After all, she had wonderful news for him!

Mourning Fog chewed quietly nearby a berry bush. The juice trickled down his chin as he took each mouthful. A sweet and tart breakfast was just the thing. He had been feeling light and energetic these past few days, and in his heart he felt as though this was only the start. He could just tell something better was on the horizon. Smiling to himself, he took another bite.
Then he heard a familiar call. His ears pricked back to pick up Life-Pulse's voice, and he took one more bite of delicious berries before turning to the direction it came from. It didn't sound distressed, as if she were in danger, but hearing her call was enough to send him sprinting to her. Even if it were to pick a fruit from a tall branch.
Bounding effortlessly over roots and puddles, he made it to a small clearing. It was obvious that some branches had already been moved, and sure enough, there stood the most beautiful doe in the swamp. He grinned from ear to ear and moved up to nuzzle her, tracing her glowing markings with his nose as he so often did. "What is it, dear?" he said, simply and gently.

She waited for the inevitable rustle that revealed where her dearest was hiding. He came bounding over to her, as graciously as only a Swampgoat could over such difficult terrain. Catching sight of that ridiculously wide grin infected her with that very same emotion. She returned the smile and her eyes dimmed as her eyelids slid down just the slightest, a sign of her contentment. She returned his nuzzle by tilted her head to the side and gave his cheek a quick lick hello.
"Well... have you eaten yet, darling?" She started with, as she didn't want him fainting or anything silly like that. She knew this news was going to be big, and she didn't want to tell him if he still had an empty stomach. Excitement, she knew, could cause one not to eat, and that was simply not a good idea, not when she knew she would grow less and less able to defend herself over the next little while. But as she asked her gaze drifted down to his beard where she could see the evidence of some berry-snacking. "I see that you have..." Grinning, she turned her head enough so that she could first lick and then nibble on his beard to clean it of his snack's remnants. But before revealing her true news she began with, "I cleared out my old den, for other creatures of the swamp to use." She took a glance around the clearing, and added, "And it looks like the clearing is coming along nicely!"

Mourning Fog chuckled as Life-Pulse's cleaning tugs tickled his chin slightly as she brushed against it.
"The berries this morning were delicious. I must show you the bushes later." he said to her, and looked around the clearing. "You are so thoughtful, sweetest. I'm sure that the creatures of the swamp will find a good use for your old den. And it looks just about finished here. Perhaps some soft bedding to sleep on. Moss over leaves or something..." he said, thoughts trailing as he pieced it together in his mind. It would be a lovely new home for the two of them and his grin stretched once more.
He wondered where his daughter was, as he had a surprise to give to his two favorite does..
((idk if you want to but we can have MF give OR and LP their swans in this RP too haha. and then OR will be all excited and run off so MF and LP can be alone again haha. OR grew up under LP's care right?))

((Sounds good to me! And yes, OR is the baby that she dragged over to him, and they raised together, speaking of which, we should probably get an LP x OR RP in sometime, too, maybe a foal or filly RP of LP teaching her something))
She would have easily allowed herself to lay down right then and there, but she decided that she should at least try to remain standing, at least for a little while longer, after all it was still cool out and would soon become warmer. She could laze about in the shade then.
her gaze cast around the clearing, and she nodded, agreeing that they could add moss and leaves to the bedding to make it softer and more comfortable. But it was not something that she felt up to tackling right now.
Something did, however, catch her eye as she looked around. There was movement off a little ways... something light, kimeti-sized was wandering about, and Life-Pulse could swear it was coming their way. When her eyes focussed on it, a tiny sigh escaped her, as she recognised the feminine figure that was making it's way closer.
She nuzzled her head into Mourning Fog's neck, but her eyes were focused on the doe, and were lit up with happiness, glowing their brightest blue.

Hearing the rustling and following the gaze of his mate, Mourning Fog turned around to see Obsidian River approach. He smiled at his lovely daughter. With both of them here, he could reveal his gifts. "Okay, Sunwing, you can bring them out now." he said towards the brush from where he came. His own swan emerged and ruffled up her feathers a bit before turning around and honking behind her. Out came two more swans, and though they were quite a bit smaller than her, they had just lost their coat of fluffy down. They both resembled Sunwing, though both had an odd blue color, and one had streaks of yellow. Sunwing alighted upon Mourning Fog's back and continued to honk at the two younger swans.
"One day I came back to my den to find that Sunwing was warming three eggs. One of them waddled off, no doubt in search of the father, but these two remained. I'd like to give one to each of you." he said, looking from the swans to his family. Obsidian River had sauntered into the clearing, her hair collecting dead leaves and debris. She looked down at the rubbish caught in the strands of her hair and sighed. Her afternoon would be wasted now that she had to clean that out. And she had just bathed this morning. Seeing her parents, she quickened her pace slightly to greet them. "Hi mom, hi dad." she said plainly, nuzzling them both. She hoped they thought she looked pretty today. She spent much of her morning running her hair through some branches to take out the knots.
Upon seeing the two young swans, she gasped. She had always admired Sunwing's beauty, ever since the swan played with her as a foal. One of the swans caught sight of her and silently waddled to her. It sat down in front of the doe and tilted it's head, inspecting her. As if approving, it looked away for a moment and then began to preen itself. Obsidian River knelt gently down, trying not to get any dirt on her knees. Peering at the swan, she whispered. "She's so beautiful..could I have this one daddy?" she said, unaware that perhaps Life-Pulse would have wanted this one..

She returned her daughter's nuzzle happily, eyes fluttering shut for a moment in delight. She had grown up so well: beautiful, dainty, feminine, there was nothing else a parent could ask for. Though... truthfully in Life-Pulse's case, she could have asked for a few genes in common... Obsidian River was not her real daughter, though she was Mourning Fog's. Life-Pulse did not rue this, not even close, but she did long to raise a baby that was truly theirs - both of theirs - and now that dream would be coming true, but her news would have to wait because all that she had eyes for was the brand new swans!
She practically cooed over the little fledglings as they waddled along behind their momma. They were truly a spitting image of Sunwing, but with a splash of a lustrous green, and one of them even had yellow! That bright contrast was like honey to the bee that is Life-Pulse. She took a few paces until her nose found that swan and nudged it softly, inspecting it closely and sniffing it intently. When her eyes could finally stray upwards, she realizes that the other swan had been just as easily claimed, and she simply responded, "Seems to fit, dun it, honey?" Her tail flicks at her mate playfully to get him to respond.

"Everything is perfect" he said, smiling at his family. His eyes closed halfway as he basked in the moment. Everything he cared for in one swamp. How could this day get any better? he wondered. Turning to his mate, he stepped closer to nuzzle her cheek. "And what have you been up to this morning, my dear?" he asked softly.
Obsidian River sat gracefully with her new fledgling swan. The silent gosling peered at her peacefully before nestling itself in between her legs. Warm and comfortable, it fell asleep as the long-haired doe watched her new pet with a smile.

She nudged her newest companion, whom she mentally named Sing-Along, but the fledgling was not about to move anywhere, so instead of testing it's flight capabilities so soon, she folded her own legs and carefully lowered herself to the ground. She did so slowly, making sure to put as little stress as possible on her growing belly, which was currently only starting to swell, but would soon become much more obvious and heavy.
Her head turned to listen to her mate speak, but before she answered she leaned to the left until her side met the ground and her legs stretched out easily. A small sigh and then she spoke, looking into Mourning Fog's glowing blue eyes that mirrored her own.
"Well other than cleaning out my old den... I did manage to confirm something that had been tugging at the edges of my mind..." A sly grin crept onto her features and she looked over the stag's face, to see if he had even an inkling of an idea... but as far as she could tell, he didn't, and so she added, "... and beginning to push at my sides..." She paused, giving him a chance to react, seeing if that would clue him in, or if she would have to be a little more forward in her news.

Mourning Fog watched her settle down for a moment, simply enjoying the way she moved. He smiled and moved beside her, leaning slightly against her back and nuzzling the nape of her neck sweetly. His eyes closed as he listened to her words, not noticing the way she grinned. After she paused, he looked up and met her eyes. Blinking, her looked around, deep in thought.
"I think you're dancing around something," he said, smiling at her again. He pondered what she meant, wondering if she was going to make this easy for him and just tell him. As soon as he thought that, he shook his head, realizing that wouldn't be the case. Instead he tilted his head, leaning against hers, and continued to try and come up with an answer.
Obsidian River gazed at her adopted mother, almost immediately seeing a difference in the doe's figure. That was just how the raven-haired doe was, though. She constantly inspected her own figure for changes, so it was easy for her to see the slight bulge in her mother's stomach. She smiled sweetly, flicking her head to sweep some of her hair out of her eyes. And the hints that Life-Pulse gave just set her thoughts in stone. But she looked to her clueless father and decided to give him a hint of her own.
"maybe even made her world a little bit bigger...made her realize she'll need to look out for more than just you and I" she said, and saw her father's eyes light up and his grin widen.
Mourning Fog finally realized what his mate meant. But the news rendered the swamp-blessed buck speechless. All he could do was shake his head from side to side in happiness, nuzzling his mate once more. Glancing down, he could see his hooves shaking from sheer excitement.

Her eyes slid shut as he nuzzled and comforted her. His warm breath on her neck imposed happiness into her muscles, allowing them to relax and a small sigh to escape her smiling lips. She could wait for her silly male to realise what she was talking about, it was no fun to just tell him!
But after his confused note and his continued silence, she opened her eyes and cast her gaze over to Obsidian River, a mischievous twinkle in her eye, and she knew right away that she understood, that she had added up all the clues and came to the right conclusion, even threw another clue at her father to help him add two and two.
When the light came on, he was even more silent than when he was trying to figure it out. Twitch would have guessed that he had to be holding his breath! She rolled her head back to look at him upside down, and noticed the shaking. She poked him with her nose and said gently, "Don't forget to breathe! We need you alive! What'm I going to do with 5 little ones running about?"

Mourning Fog let his breath rush out, a gust of a happy sigh. He closed his eyes for a moment, imagining the cuddly foals. He remembered Obsidian River when she was younger, how a tuft of onyx-colored hair used to be all that was on her brow. And now she had a beautiful waterfall of raven-feather locks. He pondered how this clutch would grow. Would they carry their father's pale coat? His spots? Or their mother's comforting mud-colored coat? Perhaps even the glowing swirls that he loved to gaze at so much. He was restless with anticipation, wishing that she was ready to lay the sacs right now! But he knew that he could not speed up time, and that good things come to those who wait.
He opened his eyes to look at his upside-down mate and nuzzled her again, a little harder this time, just so ecstatic that their first clutch together was on its way.
"I wonder how many will return to us?" he whispered, gazing at his mate lovingly.

She giggled at him, at his excitement and at his uncontrolled happiness. She accepted his nudge and playfully nudged him back a little harder, teasing in her sort of way. She watched his eyes, almost imagining what could possibly be running through his mind right now, no doubt he could see frolicking foals, but if she squinted, she could swear that she could almost see the scene unfold... What a silly old goat.
She pulled a funny face at him and in response to his question -though she knew it was more to himself or to the swamp than directed towards her- she retorted with, "Well why don't you ask Mother Swamp to look over them? To make their little beating hearts strong and their limbs powerful and their voices loud."

Mourning Fog's eyes widened slightly at the suggestion. Of course! Surely the Motherfather would bless the children of a favored son. Looking at his beloved mate with soft eyes, he nuzzled her belly gently and whispered.
"O Swamp, will you bless these growing seeds, so that they may sprout into beautiful trees. Give them roots that are strong and proud, give them branches that reach for the sky, for great things. Give them beautiful leaves and pleasant-smelling flowers that could make any who see them smile. Make them wise, brave, and compassionate. As a chosen son, I ask you this."
He lifted his head slightly, mulling over his words. He hoped he wasn't too symbolic with the prayer..but surely the Motherfather would know what he was talking about. Licking his mate's cheek, he felt like a feather drifting along a stream. Carefree.

Her ears perked up to listen to him as he asked for a blessing, but apart from that slight twitch, the doe lay very very still, relaxed next to her excited mate. When he was done, she nodded, just once, to show her approval. It was a most beautiful blessing, that was for sure. But it was getting hard to keep her tired eyes open. She had accomplished everything she had meant to today, and with that she lay her head down across Mourning Fog's forelegs, tucked her tail around her side, and allowed sleep to take over.
She would dream happy dreams of frolicking foals (and one purple stag), sunny days, colorful flowers, and all other sorts of pleasant things. She knew that she had nothing to worry about now that she had found her lifemate, and settled down to have their first clutch. She had much to look forward to (and to work towards), but she knew that all would come with time, so she sighed heavily and allowed her mind to float away from any worry and on to a utopian scene instead.
