Light fluffy clouds rolled lazily across the sky, doing their best to block the sun's rays. It wasn't enough; the hot light still shone down through the clouds, ridding the land of darkness. Beneath the shade of the forest, rested a lone Kalona. He had sought to get out of the sun, but there was little comfort from the sun's rays, even here under the trees. The only comfort was the passing of time as the sun made it's way across the sky.

As the clouds moved once again to release the sunshine at it's full glory, the light made it's way between the leaves to dance along the forest floor, and inevitably across Nykto's body. A large leathery wing shot up to block the beams from his eyes. A low growl emitted from his throat, which then turned into a groan. He waited for the light to once again leave, but it didn't. "Dammit!" he growled again as the light continued to dance across his body. "..Should have found a cave; wouldn't be having this problem..." he muttered to himself.

Slowly he stood, moving to a more shady spot and again laid down with a huff. He laid there very still a while, his eyes shut tight, his wings spread out lazily. The wind blew, rustling the leaves and again small rays of sun found their way to Nykto. His tail thumped against the ground loudly. "I hope you fall out of the sky! You cursed ball of fire!!" he roared up at the sun.

The forest went still. Nykto quieted, realizing his outburst could have been heard. He listened carefully for any sounds of approach.

Yamika lazily opened and closed her wings, the feathers being warmed by the summer sun. She liked the light and the shade equally, obviously something to do with her wonderfully mixed up blood, and glanced up at the fleecy clouds that adorned the brilliant blue of the sky.

She was moving on the outskirts of the forest, the scent of pine and the mulchy undergrowth hitting her nose. As she strolled past a stand of trees she stopped, her ears flicking as she heard a sudden outburst of noise like a voice, but she couldn't discern the words. The mare stood for a moment, indecisive, her smoky tail swishing gently.

With a light step she turned on her hooves, heading in and under the trees, lights dancing in front of her eyes for a moment as they adjusted to the difference from the sunlight to the greeny shade.

'Hello?' she called. It was possibly not the best move to announce her presence to a stranger, for all she knew there could be someone agressive in amongst the trees, but she felt that she could defend herself enough to get away should be be attacked by an overwhelming force.

Hearing no one nearby, Nykto allowed himself to relax some. It seemed at first as though he had gone unheard, and this both pleased and saddened him. He didn't want to be bothered in the mood he was in, yet, as always, he still desired company. He rolled to his side, laying his head on the cool ground beneath him. He used one wing to shade himself, letting the thick red hide take the rays.

Just as he began to rest once again, a sound caught his attention. His ears swiveled around toward the sound. He growled, realizing it what it was; another being come to disturb his rest. He decided to ignore it at first, thinking if he was quiet maybe whoever it was would go away. However, soon his curiosity got the better of him. Slowly he stood, and folded his wings protectively against his back, and started off in the direction the sound had come from. Though his mood had not improved any since the rage he felt at the sun, he figured killing something might make him feel better.

He stopped suddenly, noticing sounds of someone nearby. Muscles tensed and and fangs bared, he was ready to attack and slaughter whoever it was that dare approach him. His eyes narrowed as he caught a glimpse of someone between the trees. A female he could now tell, if not by sight then by her scent. He didn't have the best sense of smell, but he could tell it was a female all the same.

He breathed deeply, his muscles relaxing slightly. He was never one for attacking an unsuspecting female.

Yamika thought that maybe she'd been mistaken at first, maybe what she'd heard had been nothing more that a bird call distorted by the trees. She peered around them, looking to see if she could catch any movement. Nothing. She was about to turn around and leave the shelter of the forest and head back out into the sunlight when she heard the slightest of movements.

'Is someone there? Come out so I can see you..' she spoke to where she thought the noise had come from, squinting into the gloom.

'I'm not hunting or anything.' she added with a small chuckle to herself.
'I'm just nosey.'

Nykto continued to watch her in silence, watching what she would do. However, he hadn't expected her to call out like that again. Perhaps she was too stupid or naive to realize that there could be danger, or maybe..just maybe she didn't care. Either way, Nykto thought he could have some fun with this mare.

"Perhaps a bit too nosey for your own good," he said with a dark laugh. He soon emerged, stepping between the trees to reveal himself to her. "As you wish." He stared at her through narrowed eyes, every bit of him unmoving. He made no attempt to attack her, nor did he appear overly aggressive, only slightly so. He figured merely his looks would be enough to scare her off, as it had most others.

He took the time to look her over, noticing that she was no ordinary mare either. A sort of black mist or smoke seemed to emanate from her body. How peculiar, he thought. All the while, his stare stayed completely even, showing no emotion.

'Maybe.' Yamika smiled as the stallion finally showed himself. He was Kalona, though his tail was unlike his mothers, she knew enough about them to know that Shinoma's tendrilled tail was quite rare amongst them.

'But if you expect to scare me off with any kind of posturing then you'll be disappointed.' she looked him over herself in turn, noticing the strange pink eyes, and the striking contrast in the colours of his pelt.

'I'm Yamika.' she said, introducing herself with a little flick of her head. Her mane drifted around her head, the hazy parts of it seeming to move away for a moment before collecting in barely tangible coils around her head.

He continued to stare at her, his expression only changing when his eyes narrowed more. His tail flicked back and forth behind him, his wings poised very still against his back. She wasn't afraid? He thought this quite intriguing. He had met very few who hadn't run from him the moment they saw him. He'd not had many opportunities to speak with others, let alone someone not cowering before him. It was refreshing to say the least.

His jaw clenched as she announced that she was not afraid of him, finding her manners to be more than he wished to handle in the mood he was in. However, the moment before he made his move to attack, she spoke again, introducing herself. He calmed enough to stop himself.

"What a bold little thing you are," he spoke again, a fierce smirk spreading across his face, revealing sharp fangs. "It was never my intention to frighten you." He lowered his head slightly, his glare strengthening. "Though I must say, you have caught me in a rather foul mood. I would have killed you already if not for some shred of decency in me." He paused, his expression softening slightly, his muscles relaxing. "Seeing as you have told me who you are, I could never attack now without first introducing myself." He took a few steps toward her and bowed his head very slightly. "I am known as Nykto."

'Your mood isn't really my problem though is it?' Yamika replied, raising a brow. Attacking just because he was in a snit would show that he was a brute with no morals. After all, she would not be a meal for him and would defend herself if necessary. Also even if he thought her tone rather cheeky just a moment ago, she'd shown no sign of aggression.

'And yes I am bold. I am also of Kalona bloodline on my mother's side, though I don't outwardly look anything other than a slightly unusual Alicorn...' she smiled faintly.

'So you'd attack after introducing yourself? That's a very strange sort of manners given that I pose no threat, but I suppose it is to be appreciated.' Yamika bowed her head as well, her eyes staying on the stallion.

'It's good to meet you..I hope you will keep it that way as well.' she said with a little impish wrinkle of her nose.

He watched her carefully as she spoke. Aside from his tail swaying softly, he was still. She was bold, not fearing for her life at all. But having some Kalona in her could explain that, though he figured she'd be just as frail as any other normal mare. He wasn't going to test that just yet.

Her attitude was actually kind of entertaining, and she was no threat at all. She was right in that he really did have no right or reason for an attack on her. Of course that would not have mattered at all to him if he had felt like killing. No, he had no desire to hurt her, and he would have regretted it if he had. However, when he got angry, he was often unable to control himself, some darker side taking over.

"So you're an Alicorn, are you. I've heard of Alicorns, but until now I had not met one." Curious, he began to circle her. He was now seemingly completely relaxed, his anger gone. As was the usual; his moods seemed to change faster than the wind. "Tell me, have you any abilities?" He was referring to the special healing powers that Unicorns were known to have. He had heard that some Alicorns had them as well, but he wondered if it was true.

'Partly an Alicorn yes.' Yamika corrected him politely. Though she was unsure of whether she was going to follow her mother or her father's behaviour in life, she was not ashamed of her Kalona side. It just confused her. Why did she feel compelled to hunt and kill if she didn't like the taste of what she bought down? She raised a brow again, turning as he circled her, he may have been relaxed but as she could see his mood was a little on the mercurial side she stayed on her toes..so to speak.

'Abilities? What do you mean by that?' she asked, her head canted to one side.

'Beyond looking and being slightly insubstantial..which is not a small thing I suppose as my mother and grandfather are the only ones I know that even slightly resemble my body makeup..I have a knack for being a little cheeky?' she grinned.

"Part Alicorn, forgive me," he said, feigning an apologetic look. He laughed as she finished speaking, a low controlled sound. "I would say you're quite a bit more than a little cheeky." A smile spread across his face as he continued his circle. "I have noticed that you do appear a bit insubstantial, as you say. And it intrigues me." He stopped his circling to stand at her side. "I assume that means you do not have the minor healing abilities that are rumored to be held by Alicorns."

He wondered just how much Kalona blood she had in her. She looked nothing like a Kalona, but that did not mean that the genes could not present themselves in other ways besides physically. He wondered which side she favored more; which sort of life she preferred.

'You're forgiven..' Yamika replied, rustling her feathered wings as she laughed at her continued cheekiness. What was the fun in being serious all the time anyway? Just because she and possibly he were hunters didn't mean they couldn't have a sense of humour.

'You see right through me then.' she winked and smiled prettily at the stallion this time, throwing in a bit of flirting with the cheekiness.

'Healing? Oh, no, not that I know of.' she frowned, trying to remember if her father had ever mentioned anything of the sort. Not to her recollection at any rate.

'I could always attempt it the next time I go hunting.' she shrugged, thinking that if she did do that she would try it on one of her solo hunting forays, her mother would think her very strange if she tried to heal what she attacked.

'But given that my blood is quite diluted, I'm not sure how well it would go.'

Nykto didn't try to hold back as he laughed aloud now. She really was a strange one, Nykto thought. No doubt her boldness came from her Kalona side. Most normal Kalonas would not stand for her attitude, attacking on sight. He, however was different.

As she spoke again and winked, Nykto couldn't help but raise a brow. Though his expression returned to normal quickly, showing little emotion again. He wondered for a moment if it would be very easy to manipulate this mare to get something he wanted. However, he quickly pushed the thought from his mind. He often had trouble controlling his own twisted thoughts.

"You should try; you should always know your own power." He smiled now, a more reassuring smile. "Know thyself..." he half muttered. He thought for a moment, deciding what to do with his new acquaintance. This was his time to sleep -and he did need it- but if he stayed to converse with this mare, he might possibly be able to use her in the future. However, he did not feel like talking right now. She had managed to suppress his anger for now, but that didn't cure his bad mood. That wouldn't be gone until nightfall. He was torn for what to do; then an idea came to mind.

"Why not try it now then?" he gave her an almost sly look as he moved to circle around her again. "What say you to a hunt? Here, now...with me?" A smirk spread across his face, his fangs glinting in the green light of the forest.

'You sound like my mother..' she muttered with a half-smile. She wasn't sure if she was saying it as a compliment or complaint - she did love her mother, but because of what Shinoma was it had made Yamika's life complicated from the moment she had emerged from her basket.

'A hunt with you?' she raised a brow, at least now she knew that he did hunt. But did he eat the kill? That was the question..and if he did what would his reaction be when she declined to do so herself.

'I suppose I could spare the time.' she answered casually, giving her smoky tail a flick, the barely tangible parts moving and distorting as she did so.

Like her mother? Nykto blinked slowly to hide any eye rolling he might be doing without knowing. He decided not to be offended by her comment though. She had said it in a rude way after all. He supposed it could very well be a good thing. Though still, he didn't like being compared to someone's mother. His words hadn't been as guidance to this female as much as they were his beliefs.

He laughed very softly at her response to his suggestion of a hunt. "You had better be able to spare the time. I'm taking my sleeping time to spend with you. The least you could do is act a bit more enthusiastic." He laughed again. He didn't really care how enthusiastic she was, nor did he care if she wanted to hunt or not. He had made the request to her, but if she had turned him down, he would have gone on his way.

He turned to head deeper into the forest. "Alright then," he spoke without turning to look at her. "Let's get on with it then." He wasn't the greatest at tracking prey. His senses were not as keen as many others. Though once he had his prey in sight, it would be no trouble at all. He preferred to hunt from the sky and swoop down on his unsuspecting victim. However, seeing as it was still daylight, he wouldn't be going out into the open for that sort of hunt.
