The Thompson sub-machine gun: antiquated, yes; obsolete, that's the question. What's your opinion on the tommy gun? Personally, I think there would still be advantages to carrying it into combat today. It has a much quicker rate of fire than a smaller, modern sub-machine gun of the same caliber would be able to have. Also the extra weight of the gun gives it greater controllability, and better accuracy.

Ah, crap. i clicked no instead of yes.
As much fun as the Tommy is, I think it would easily be outmatched by more modern sub machine guns such as the MP5, P90, etc. Despite this it was a good gun for its tiime.

Obviously the Thompson wouldn't be able to compete with modern guns, the thing has been around for nearly a century for crying out loud. I just think that the fact that it's such a heavy gun gives it a bit of an edge over say a mac-10. And it's super fast rate of fire would offer a significant fear factor that could really help you in a gun fight. And let's not forget, it's a 45., not a 9mm, so it's stopping power would be much better than most modern sub-machine guns. I still agree though that this doesn't make up for the advantages that modern technology has on it, but still, I think it would not be impractical to carry one into combat. And I'll vote yes for you, that way your vote will count as mine and order will be restored to the polls.

Thank you.
To be honest it is a hell of a good gun however it rises like mad and for any accuaracey to be acheived it has to be burst fired. Unless you were to go for the traditional spray 'n' pray SMG technique. I agree with you on the fire rate and stopping power though.

Well I think basically any sub-machine gun has to be fired in bursts if you want any accuracy out of it. Oh and your sig cracks me up btw xD

Thank you, my good sir.
The only problem is that, like I said, it rises a hell of a lot and to keep it under control you have to aim low down and fire in a burst so as you fire you move up the body.

The option of a 100-round clip and vent holes along the gas to escape and thus prevent major recoil make the Tommy among the largest contributors to the modern-day sub-machine gun, and it's highly acurate if you're a good shooter. With its excessive rate of fire, the Thompson is still a very versatile weapon.

That's actually one of the things I was thinking, that a 100 round drum magazine is available for them. Oh and don't say clip, tommy guns take magazines, clips are little strips of metal used to load old bolt-action rifles. Bugs the s**t outa me when people do that.

Ah, yeah, my bad. Wasn't really paying too much attention to wording there...

i have to agree with you that it would be a decent gun to have now-a-days, but, if it was me, i would take an MP-5 over it. the MP-5 still has the accuracy that it would have but come in a smaller, lighter, easier to use package. besides, u can customize a MP-5 a bit more than a Tommy gun(red dot scope, silencer, ect.) and I'm all about customization.

I'm sure you could customise a Tommy. Just slap on some rails and a holographic sight, a round drum and a silencer; and there you have it, a heavy as hell geared up Thompson.

Yea you could customize a tommy gun too, it would just take some gun smithing.

M-4 Custom and Mini 14, also highly adjustable guns. M-4 can even get a grenade launcher attachment.

yeah, but how would you like to be lugging that heavy thing around? i prefer lighter guns myself.
