I saw something at Borders that was basically a tarot card starter kit, and I was wondering if it would be wise to purchase it. I've seen a lot on here that choosing your own deck is the best thing, but I'm not sure where else I would be able to find tarot decks. Should I buy this kit and practice with these cards until I find a deck that I really fall in love with, or should I wait?

Thank you ahead of time for your insight.

If you're a beginner I would suggest going with the Rider-Waite deck, if you're unsure of which to choose. I'm sure Borders, Waterstone's etc stock it.
It's simple and pretty easy to handle from what I hear.

That said, the only deck I've ever gotten on with is the Animal Wise Tarot by Ted Andrews. Beautiful deck and (seemingly) rather unique.

If it helps here's a site I used to find my deck: http://www.aeclectic.net/tarot/

They have loads of decks cited. Even a Hello Kitty one.

From what I understand the tarot decks are a matter of personal taste, and there are hundreds of types, For your first one I recommend something that comes with an instruction manual, unless you have a prior knowledge of how to use one, having a tool, and not knowing how to use it can be at best useless, and at worst dangerous. I wish you good luck in your choice of tarot decks

I was browsing DA when i found it two days later i saw it in borders. I quickly ran to the atm to get money so i could get it

If the Rider-Waite deck is too run-of-the-mill for you you can look for similar versions, or decks that come with a book at least. That is all of the basics that you really need. My preferred deck is Gilded Tarot. It is basically the same structure and cards as the Rider-Wait deck but with flashier, more in depth imagery, Gilded Tarot is for you.

Basically, I suggest you go to your Borders store and ask them to see the decks. That is where I got mine, and since they are easy to steal, they are locked up. Find a few titles that you are interested in and try and look up a few cards from those decks online, so you can get a feel of the art, one of the most important aspects of Tarot. Then see if the deck comes with a book or if there are books on the deck. If it is your first deck, or your first deck with a particular structure, it can be impossible to read. It is a big decision.

Thank you, everyone, for your guidance.

I didn't purchase a deck today, but I know I will sometime in the future. It's too bad that the borders that is close to me is only a Borders Express, so they only have that kit I described. Art is an important aspect of my life, so that will most likely be my main focus with choosing the right deck. And from what you guys have told me, it should be. I won't buy that starter kit, because it seems like so much more than I need.

I'm definitely looking forward to coming back to this guild for all my other questions on tarot and paganism in general.

I am very glad to hear that. You are welcomed anytime.

Start with the Rider-Waite deck but you need to let the deck choose you going with which ever feels the most right. The same as with any tool.

I have three, my first was a Rider-Waite given to me by my grandfather, the second a dragon deck I spotted at an occult store and just had to get and the third, the Guilded Tarot which is beautiful by the way, caught my eye at Barnes and Noble and demandded that I buy it. They all work, though different situations/questions work better with different decks.

Well, from what I have heard, Your high Priestess Or someone that of close to you should be the one to buy them.. It should be a gift, Although I bought my own, It's just My friend had this awesome set but she couldn't work well with them.. She gave them to My best friend who really got me started in practicing Wicca, and She says that those work much better for her.. Most things like tarots, Familiars, etc. Usually find you. Its now what you love, Its what you feel. There should be an automatic connection. Because when using your tools, there's a bond between you, if that makes since... Or at least... Thats what I feel....

i buy all my decks myself
i love walking around in stores with spiritual stuff in it
and most of them sell tarot decks as well
i useally always look at them and pick them up to see
what they are about (animals, fairyies, angels,...)
sometimes i just get a feeling i cant explain it but
i can just feel i got some sort of conncetion with that deck
and most of the time if i can afford it i buy it

do i sound like a complete idiot now?

anyway you should buy the deck that feels right to you wink
