"Mmm... Left a bit more, itchy there."
Kleos smiled at the dozy mental voice and dipped her hands into the bucket of oil by her side before setting about massaging the desired area. Moriath gave a deep contented rumble, as deep as a small hatchling could manage at any rate. After the last manic few sevendays it was nice to be out in the warm afternoon sun with her partner just pampering her. There were lessons to worry about, she knew that, but right now Moriath's relaxed mood was affecting her. She'd be right back to trying to memorize every detail of the material they were covering soon enough, but right now all seemed right with the world.
A squeak from Ice, who was actually swimming around in the bucket of oil, announced that he was feeling good too; the oil was lovely on his skin and not long ago he had caught a fish! He was still very proud of that, and totally unaware of the fact that it had already been dead and Kleos had just been waving it on a piece of string for him; so far as he was concerned he was a master hunter flitt! His human and the big red didn't need to worry about getting dinner with him around... Though it might just take a while to get enough to feed such big people!
"He really is stupid," Moriath commented with a lazy grin, "adorable, but stupid."

A bronze streak goes wizzing by then circles around for another pass. He cheeps curiously at the blue in the bucket of oil. What was he doing in there? Didn't he have a nice person to rub oil on him?
A young girl comes walking towards the group. Sleeves and pants rolled up to help stay cool and keep them out of the way. Wet edges on the pants attest that they hadn't been completely safe. "Boreal?! You're not bothering them are you?" As she gets closer her nose and cheeks are just slightly pink from the begining of a sunburn. "Come Boreal." She holds out her arm.
The flit gives a happy trill and glides over to the black haired girl. He lands on the proffered arm then moves up to the padded shoulder, twining his tail gently around her neck.
Wykla rubs her cheek against the little flit. "You can't go sticking your nose into the business of everyone you see. They wont always like it." She turns her attention to the girl and red. "I'm sorry he bothered you."

The whizzing of the bronze past her right ear caused Kleos to jump, almost upset the bucket, and to startle her two companions to boot. Ice, seen as he had been addressed, was the first to recover; he cheeped up at the bronze in a friendly manner to greet him. He did have a person, that person there was his one, but right now she was busy with the big red one; he had to wait his turn! Also! If the bronze wanted to join him in the oil he could, it was very nice, and so long as they stayed out of the way of hands his person wouldn't mind.
While Ice was chattering to his new friend, Kleos and Moriath regained their composure and turned as one to regard the little girl who, it seemed, was the owner. She had to be around thirteen or twelve turns old, and possessed a mismatched pair of eyes. Those eyes were a fairly distinctive feature, and so Kleos was able to positively identify her as a candidate, probably a native of the Weyr to be standing so young. "Not to worry," Kleos said eventually with a smile, "we were just a little startled, no harm done... You're a candidate, aren't you? I'm Kleos, and my lifemate is Moriath. Oh, and the little beast in the oil bucket is Ice."
As if on cue, Ice hopped up onto the edge of the bucket and cheeped a greeting; this was bronze's person?

Boreal trills at the friendly blue. Yes yes! This was His. He sends thoughts of love and happiness at the girl. Did the blue's oil and feed him too? He pauses to look at 'the red one.' After due consideration he cheeps pleasantly at her. To the blue, he didn't think she'd fit into that tiny bucket like they could. He looks at His and cheeps questioningly. The blue said he could.
Wykla winces as Boreal carries a conversation on in her ear. "Hey I can't hear with you talking in my ear like that." She shakes her head. "If they don't mind you in their oil, then go ahead. But remember I just finished your bath this morning."
She gives the other girl a sheepish grin. "He does like to be friendly. And I think bathing is his favorite time. Probably why he came over here." Wykla looks up at the taller girl. "Yeah, my first time. Congrats on Impressing her. Nice to meet you Moriath and Ice." She looks curiously at the crimson. "I'm Wykla and you've met Boreal."
With a happy hum he uncurls his tail and glides over to land on the bucket edge. Politely he looks up at the blue's person for permission. It wouldn't do to get His in trouble with her.

Ice trilled back and sat up tall, flapping his oily wings and then crooning at his person. She had saved him!... He didn't know what from, but she had, and she was wonderful and fed him and stroked him and let him sleep on her bed! She was happy for them to be in the oil? After querying this with an image an receiving an okay, Ice's eyes whirled a brilliant green and he hopped back into the bucket, crooning encouragement to the bronze as he did so.
Kleos chuckled at the little pair of creatures, shaking her head slightly before turning back to Wykla. "My thanks," she said with a smile as she began to work more oil into Moriath's shoulder, "I can still scarce believe it; I had only just begun to adapt to Weyr life after coming from my Hold and then this beauty turns life on its head again. Not that I mind, of course... And I'm sure your time will come," she smiled again and nodded. "You're young yet, you've many turns out on the sands."
"A sweet young female," Moriath commented to her lifemate, raising her head a little and regarding the young candidate with calm eyes. "I think she would make a good partner to a green or gold one day, maybe even a crimson if she's very lucky. Do give her my greetings."
Kleos quirked a lopsided smile at her partner's idea of ranking; so many were blinded by shining gold that they couldn't see the passion and glory of a crimson. "Moriath greets you," she said to Wykla, "and she says she thinks you could become an excellent rider one day." No need to worry the child with talk of colours, it did seem to be a great matter of concern for many and right now the conversation was light and pleasant; she saw no reason to change that.

After a moment's hesitation the bronze flops ungracefully into the bucket. A drop of oil lands on his snout and he goes cross-eyed trying to see it. He thought the oil felt nice against his skin, but he much preferred when His rubbed him with an oily cloth or her hands. He trills at the blue and paddles around with him.
Wykla smiles at the flits. She was glad they got along. She blinks, "Thank you? For what? I don't think I've done anything have I?" Wykla moves where she can listen and watch Kleos oiling. "At least you had time to adjust right? Not everyone is so lucky." She chuckles a little. "I bet she was a good turning life on its head though." She grins.
"Yeah, I'm waiting for my life to flip flop. I know, it's hard to wait." And I get jealous sometimes. Wykla flushes with pleasure as the dragon designed to comment on her. "Thank you Moriath. I'll be the best rider I can!" She glances shyly at the pair. "Can I ask how it was? I mean when you Impressed?

"Well..." Kleos looked down at Moriath, smiling softly at the little dragonet. "You can ask," she continued eventually, "but I confess I'm not sure if I can tell you, I'm not certain I have the words..." Still looking down at her bondmate, Kleos cast her mind back to the hatching. "It was down to the last two eggs," she recalled, "Moriath was wandering around the sands... I remember just wanting her to find Hers before she wore out. Then she looked at me and spoke to me and I..."
Kleos paused to clear her throat; she still got emotional when she remembered that first second of connection. Perfection, pure and simple.
"I became a different person... No, I became myself but more. I felt as if... as if I had found the piece of myself I hadn't known I was missing. That's how people usually put it, and it's true. Feeling completely whole, and completely loved, having all of your faults forgiven... Knowing that you will never be alone, and suddenly knowing another soul completely." Clearing her throat again Kleos finally looked back over at Wykla. "That's as well as I can put it into words. It's love at first sight, yet at the same time you feel you've known your other part for ten thousand turns..." She did hope she wasn't making the girl jealous, or making her long too much. It was true that Wykla had turns left to stand yet, but it was also true that she might never be chosen; such was the case for many a weyrbrat.

Wykla's eyes go glassy as she listens to the new rider. She's clearly in a daydream as she starts to list to one side, coming to lean unconsciously against Moriath's front leg. Wouldn't it be just grand to impress at the next hatching? Waiting for the little dragonette to break free or helped out then seeking her out. With a start she comes back to herself. The moment she realizes she's leaning on the dragon, Wykla jerks upright flushing red. "Oh I'm SO sorry! I didn't mean to lean on you!"
"I'm glad Moriath found you," she says shyly. "It must be nice to be loved all the time. Thank you for trying to explain it. Maybe some day I'll be able to experience it too." She gives a soft sigh. With a glance at Boreal she gives a sheepish grin. "Well it looks like we're interrupting their baths..." Wykla pauses awkwardly, unsure what to do next.

"It is. It's wonderful and... and I certainly hope you get the chance to feel it too... Oh, and Moraith says not to worry about leaning on her." That was the best anyone could do for a candidate, hope for them. Now that she herself was bonded, she could truly hope for everyone without a selfish little 'but me first' note in there. She didn't need to long after anything anymore, not now she had hers...
"Well of course, but be sure you wish the best to the girls first. They deserve to have greens and golds and crimsons, it is a shame when a female hatchling insists on a male rider." She really had to question the wisdom of greens sometimes, but then she supposed they were not crimson, and therefore innately not quite as bright; it wasn't really their fault in the end. At least golds always chose females, although their insistence on females who liked males was nearly as wearisome as green picking males.
Well, she couldn't quite say she agreed with Moriath's dismissal of all males, but at least in her case she was glad she'd been chosen by a wonderful lady such as Moriath... But on day, males would fly them. Repressing a shudder of disgust, Kleos scooped up another handful of oil and began to massage it into Moriath's hide. "So tell me," she glanced at Wykla, "what did you make of the master healer? Did you see him around at all?" The questions he had asked of her still floated around in her head, and she had to wonder at their purpose. Was he thinking of suggesting changes in Benden?... Interesting, for sure.

"Thank you Kleos and Moraith." She smiles and gingerly leans against the foreleg again. Maybe now with the backing of a real rider a dragon might choose her. One never knew. Any good word might help. Wykla almost chuckles at her silliness.
Oblivious to the private conversation, she watches Kleos oiling Moraith. She really is a pretty color. With the oil it makes her all shiny in the sun. Wykla considers the girl's question carefully before answering. How was she going to take Wykla's blunt response? But then again, being a Melvren rider and having an atypical....
"I did see him and he asked me some questions. I think he was really rude. He didn't have any right to be here questioning how we do things." She bites her bottom lip thinking. "If they wanted help, they should just ask politely. Not be all sneaky about it. The Weyrleaders should have kicked him out until they asked." Her arms cross in a defiant way.
A bronze head rises out of the bucket of oil on a long neck. He trills to His then looks at the red dragon getting covered in oil by Hers. Could she get everything?

"Mmmh..." Kleos frowned slightly and nodded as the young candidate gave her opinions. "His questions themselves were not rude, but I agree that the manner he is approaching us is most disrespectful," she said as she checked for any bits of red hide that had missed the oil so far. "I shall be glad when he moves on," she continued with a shake of her head, "though I confess it concerns me that we do not really know why he is here... Well, we know that he wants answers to his questions, but why? I suppose it must have something to do with the fact that our queens clutch while theirs do not but beyond that," the young rider shrugged, "who can say."
"If he does not leave soon, I shall discuss it with the queens," Moriath put in to Hers arily, "I am sure they will see that his barging in is unacceptable and make the Benden dragons leave; all they need is a little nudge from me, I'm sure."
Something her partner's self-importance really did stagger her, she had to wonder if she'd ever get used to it. Still, egotistical or not she adored the red dragon, still couldn't believe she'd been chosen.
As the bronze head popped up, Moriath turned her own head to regard the flitt lazily. Of all male creatures, she liked firelizards best; they at least didn't pretend to be better than she was, they were actually quite sweet. As such, she rumbled at the little bronze in a friendly manner; she was just fine thank you... though she was beginning to grow rather tired.

"I think we'll all be happy when they leave. And not a moment too soon!" Wykla tilted her head. "You too? I thought I was the only one worried about that. Just what could they be planning?" Her brow wrinkled as she was clearly thinking of possibilities. "Nothing good I reckon."
Wykla glanced up at the sky and grimaced. "As much as I hate to leave, I must. I'm due for some cleaning duty and if I'm late they promised to flay me. It's been great talking to you Kleos and Moriath. C'mon Boreal, make sure you get the extra oil off or you'll be too slippery."
Boreal gave the crimson a cheep. A nap was a great idea! He would find a spot where all he had to do was open an eye to watch His as she did stuff. And she'd come over to give him pets..... Distracted by His calling to him, he pulled himself out. A small shake shed most of the excess oil. His wings blurred as he took to flight.

Kleos scowled and shook her head. "I have no idea what he's planning," she muttered, "but it behooves us to keep an eye on him where we can... Ah, still," a slight smile returned to the young rider's lips, "I shall not keep you from your duties. Besides, Moriath needs to rest soon so I probably ought to head inside myself." So saying, she rose to her feet and swept a bow to the young candidate before scooping up the bucket of oil, in which Ice still happily paddled. "Good day to you then Wykla," she said with a smile, "and should I not get the chance to speak with you again before it, I wish you all the best at the next hatching."
