Nathan was at the park, but it was the wrong time of day to meet up with Scorpio again. She had said at night, 9pm, but he had arrived in the day time. Of course, he wasn't expecting to run into her now. It occurred to him that it might be a good idea to get a layout of the park, so when it was night out he wouldn't bump into a tree.

He moved down a path, kicking a can as he went, hands shoved in his pockets, eyes on the ground. He looked up, though, when he heard some music on the air, blinking in confusion.

Was someone blasting... violin... music in a park? If they were, that was pretty stupid. He moved to follow it, though, because it was at least pretty and he wanted to find its source. He would decide when he saw them if he wanted to give them a hard time about it.

It seemed to lead him to a young lady sitting on a bench with her violin, not a recording, with a... bird? A dark bird, like a crow. Nate wasn't into birds.

"What are you doing?" he asked, not seeing a cup for people to drop coins in.

While the previous night had helped Angela quite a bit... she was now past the stage of mopping around, and felt the need to vent her frustration. Venting her frustration usually involved her simply playing her violin relentlessly, and while her parents usually allowed her to play to her heart's content, she had been driving them absolutely batshit crazy. They had suggested she get some air and perhaps play it outside, so she had gone to the park.

It'd seemed like a logical choice at the time. When she'd gotten there, she'd noticed, with some small amount of sadness, that there weren't many people; the sleep epidemic had affected quite a large amount of the city's population, and most of those unaffected spent their free time at the hospital, not the park. Angela herself had spent quite a bit of time there, visiting the fallen Aquarius.

At any rate, the mostly deserted park had seemed like a prime place, and she'd settled herself on a park bench, playing away her frustration without a care of whom might be listening. Her pet raven (she was using the term rather loosely here, seeing as how the bird didn't reside within the house) had gone with her and was currently perched on her right shoulder; it kept alternating, it's position, moving from her shoulder, to the bench and back again.

When the boy approached and spoke, the large bird turned his head, spread his wings and 'cawed' loudly, forcing te girl to blink out of her daze and look up to find... Nate.

Oh boy. Oh wow. This was awkward.

For a whole few moments she stared at him silently, trying to work around her thoughts. She only barely caught herself from telling him he was early, and mentally kicked herself, "Venting," she told him sincerely, "Some people punch eachother. Some people break windows.... I play the violin."

Nate stared at her while she was staring at him, not quite sure why they were having this staring contest at all. But he was game for it, not shying away from her gaze, just watching her without blinking as she seemed to take him in. Maybe she was just blown away by how awesome his pants were. They were pretty cool.

"I break windows," he said in reply, nodding, "or punch people. And punch people. I don't play the violin, though." He moved a bit closer, looking at the bird. "I don't think your friend likes me. Already."

He grinned, looking at her again, this time taking his turn to scrutinize her. Had he seen her at the hospital before? He was always there, after all, looking after his unconscious father. Kind of. He nodded at her, like he approved and she passed inspection. Really, he was just silently admitting how cool it was to have a raven.

"I do play some piano and guitar and stuff, but nothing fancy. Are you playing by ear, or is that a piece you know or what?" He seemed to just strike up conversation with people, without actually introducing himself. In fact, that was twice now with the same person that he had done it, though he wasn't aware of the fact.

It was just a bad habit.

As he spoke, she arched a brow, looking mildly bemused for some reason. She should have scowled at him, lord knew that much; she should have felt mildly offended on behalf of the world, but she really couldn't. For him, this was a first time meeting (technicaly it wasn't, but he just didn't know any better), while she already had insight on him, "Oh?" she'd once crashed a window; a car window, but she hadn't done it on purpose. A youma had been chasing her, and she... well, she'd been a bit clumsy. Not that he was going to tell him, "I punch people too. And kick them - but I don't think we do it in quite the same way," she lowered the violin from her chin to her lap, the raven tilting his head this way and that as he observed the boy.

"There's a lot of muggings around these parts," she elaborated, "I take classes. I don't plan on giving them a second chance," technically a white lie - she'd never been mugged, but she was indeed taking classes. More like training sessions. Angela wasn't quite sure what was going to happen to those sessions now that they were down several members though. She was going to have to contact Aries; in the mean time, she'd been doing her nightly patrols, and those offered more than enough chances to practice (did they ever).

A smile finally reached her lips, "You play the piano?" for some reason, she'd have really liked to see that, "I love the guittar, but all I can play is this," she lifted up the violin, "It helps," she'd always been fascinated by the strings that Apocalyptica played; not that was real venting. She could never hope to go that goddamned fast, "I'm just going with what I feel. I used to take classes, but decided that taking them made it a chore, not a hobby. This is a hobby for me; I don't pretend to carry it further than that. It was sapping the fun from it," a pause as she noticed that perhaps, just perhaps, she should offer him her name; he had an apparently poor habit of not offering his, "I'm Angela," she scooted to the side on the bench, a silent offer, "And this is Edgar. He's harmless, really," the bird seemed to puff up, as if offended by the claim.

"You're been mugged, huh? Probably some low life. At least if I stick someone up I make sure they're a dude," he said, shaking his head. Because that was a moral system: don't mug anyone that can't fight back, or looks like they can't. Don't mug chicks or old folks or kids. It wasn't clear if he was kidding or not, and chances were good that he wasn't.

"Nathan," he said, not indicating to himself but it was rather clear that he was talking about his own name, and not trying to rename her bird or something. He sat down, slouching immediately, and looked at her with his head slightly tilted.

"I like the way you think. I'm the same way. I don't do anything that seems more like a job than a hobby. That's why I don't do classes, either. I should, I suck, but I just like to play. I don't want it to turn into homework, and I don't care about who wrote what piano piece, or what note is named what and why. I just... like the music and the way it feels to play."

He was rambling again. When he finally met his father, and spoke to him, he would come to learn where this gene came from.

"Edgar huh? How come you have crow for a pet? Or did you just find him out here while playing?" Birds could be charmed by music, right?

She was watching him silently again, and did not talk for a few moments. In all honesty, she had rarely been up against a situation such as this; she kind of wanted to be open and straightforward. It sort of sucked that she felt like he was his friend and he couldn't know as much - it was probably a good thing that she was patient and laid back, otherwise, the situation would have been increasingly frustrating, not just awkward, "The things that crawl around this city are nothing short of out of the ordinary," she said, arching a brow at him when he implied that he might have mugged someone, "There's rumors of monsters, nothing like ordinary muggers. I've seen some rather strange things myself, have you?"

Turning her attention to her violin, she blinked, "Well, I'm just honestly not good enough to life off of music, and quite frankly, trying to compete against others was making my miserable. I was forgetting why I liked this to begin with, so I decided to stop. It's useful for venting. Much better than video games," this wasn't her only hobby after all, she had others. It was just that tetris wasn't particularly good for venting one's frustration, "I'd offer it; I'd love to hear you play," she was talking about her instrument, apparently, "But it's nothing like a guitar."

No sooner did he sit down beside her that the bird hooped his way around the girls back so he could approach Nathan. He still looked wary, and kind of guarded, what with the way it opened it's wings a bit, as if an attempt to make him look bigger. However, when it became clear Nathan was not going anywhere and did not seem to be a threat, Edgar hooped off the girl's shoulders and settled itself between them on the bench, nearing the boy in his curiosity, "I don't know," she said as she looked at the bird, "Some people have parrots. I have a crow. And a scorpion. They're quite smart, you know - Ravens and crows I mean," a pause as she lifted her head, "I've been told I'm kind of strange."

Nathan shrugged his shoulders. "I haven't seen any monsters," he lied, but then took it back, "well, I saw one, but it wasn't evil. It was like, this shadow dog. Anyway, it was cool. What have you seen? Any real monsters? Ever since the paper started spitting out stories on them I wanted to see one."

He, of course, didn't want to be eaten by one so he tried not to go out looking for them.

Shaking his head, he agreed that it was probably better that he not play her violin, "I'd break it, I'm sure. I don't think I can strum it, anyway," he laughed. It would be something like a Ukulele if he tried it that way, considering how small it was. No, it looked too dainty for him.

He listened to her as she talked about her pets, very surprised. It made him not want to mention the hamster he was taking care of for his father. That would just be embarrassing, considering she had a scorpion. He watched as the raven got closer, smiling rather softly, which was an unfamiliar expression for the boy to make.

"So what if it's weird? Or strange, or whatever. I think it's cool, and obviously you do or you wouldn't have them. So ******** what other people think, right?" He grinned, not the most polite way to put it, but it summed up his thoughts on the matter. "And if you do care what other people think, at least I think it's cool? So there's that."
PostPosted: Sun Jun 13, 2010 2:17 pm

Her expression darkened just a notch; just by reading it, it would have been safe to assume that yes, she'd seen some, "Frankly... I don't think there's many people around here that haven't seen them. The few lucky ones, know people that have seen them," a shrug was issued forth, "I saw a centipede once," it had been a while back; the thing had been rather big, and she recalled the way it had attacked a civilian rather vividly, "I saw it from afar though. Those aren't the worst ones though - the worst ones are the human ones," she meant the negaverse agents, but she wasn't going to go into detail, "Monsters are monsters. I wonder what their excuse is."

Ah, so he had indeed thought that Fluffy was cool. Angela turned to offer him a smile, which might have looked out of place with the current conversation. She couldn't help it though; it was hard enough to keep herself from tripping and saying something she shouldn't be saying in this form, "That's too bad. I really would like to see how you play, and it's not like you're have a huge audience," her eyes scanned the mostly deserted park, "Almost everyone's at the Hospital. I need to go later myself to check up on a friend," more like a family member, in a way. Alas.

As he spoke, the girl watched him, kind of surprised by his words; she hadn't really mentioned that people thought she was strange as a bad thing. She had merely been trying to offer an explanation for her choice of pets, yet in his own way, he'd decided to comfort her, "You know, for someone that vandalizes windows and punches people, you're kind of nice. Thank you. No one's ever put it that way," she smiled when the bird gave a final hop and settled itself on Nathan's leg. The bird maintained that pose, head tilting to one side regarding him curiously, "Technically... he's not mine, mine. He does his own thing - He's just for whatever reason, taken a liking to me. He sleeps outside, and there's time where I don't see him for days. He's still a good companion when he's around though. Very smart bird."

Nathan nodded slowly. He knew his father had seen one. Or maybe more, since he had some newspaper articles actually cut out and pinned up, which all happened around the library. It seemed he had been involved in something more than Nathan yet knew, anyway.

Not that he could ask him about it.

He noticed her smiling and it caught him off guard. At least it was a pretty smile. He couldn't help but return it, his own thin, the corners of his lips just turned upward. He nodded slowly.

"Yeah, this whole town is, literally, unconscious. My da- uh, the guy I'm staying with... Tony. Tony's in the hospital, too, and I go there to see how he's doing. Boring, though." Nathan shrugged. He didn't say that he didn't think Tony would be waking up, not wanting to upset her if she was worried about someone.

He smiled at her, a bit of a better effort than before, though it turned into a smirk, "don't mention it. Really. You'll ruin my rep if people think I'm nic- oh hey! Edgar came to visit me." He grinned, reaching a finger to gently scratch that the bird's feathers on his chest. He listened as she explained how the bird hung around her. "That's really cool. All I've got is this stupid hamster that belongs to Tony back at the apartment. If your bird ever needed a snack..."

In all honesty, Angela had caught his slip. She would have been willing to bet money on the fact he had been about to say 'dad', mostly because her mind could not seem to find a better fitting word for the sentence. Besides, if that was the case, well, it explained a bit (a lot) about his behavior, in her mind (then again, she had no idea about his upbringing whatsoever - she was assuming that maybe this was a phase or something he was recently undergoing). She had no way to know that her assumption was wrong, so she went with it.

"So many people are there. I hope they're having better dreams than we are," she had, of course, been affected by the nightmares, just like any other person in Destiny city. She just hoped the slumbering people were having a trouble-less, peaceful sleep, "I've been going there a lot too. There's someone important to me there. I felt... frustrated. I couldn't do anything to help," a shrug, "The place is indeed boring. But going there feels like... something," patrolling also helped, but she couldn't very well say that, "I hope your Tony wakes up soon too," huh, Tony, Tony... why did that name ring a bell? Mmmm...

She snorted.

She couldn't help it. And the moment she did, she lifted her hand and covered her mouth, looking mildly embarrassed to have made the noise; she usually tried to be polite. It was just that for some odd reason, his words had amused her. Lowering her hand and trying not to look completely embarrassed, she turned her gaze over to him, "You're actually doing a good job of ruining it all on your own. I don't think you need my help at all. But don't worry; your secret is safe with me. I will take it to my grave."

When the boy reached out to touch him, the raven puffed out slightly, but it allowed contact, and soon enough drew nearer, leaning into the touch when it became obvious Nathan was, in fact, not going to hurt him, "I am going to guess Tony would be pretty upset if you did that. But no, for the most part, Edgar takes care of himself. I give him snacks, but he's pretty efficient on his own," a pause, "Watson on the other hand, is more entertaining to watch when he feeds."

Nathan nodded slowly, thinking about the nightmares that seemed to have only come about when getting here. What kind of a strange plague knocked people out and gave the rest nightmares? Seemed like a crazy world, but he supposed that was fitting. Compared to all the other things he had been reading at the apartment, from the newspapers, this was pretty tame.

"I don't really know the guy. I'm just staying at his place. I've... never met him. Like. Really. I haven't talked to him: he was unconscious when I got here," Nathan hadn't really told anyone that, save yelling at that one girl but that had all been rage and he had almost punched the unconscious Tony in the face at that time. Now he was calm, and sharing because he wanted to, not because he was venting.

"I feel frustrated, too..."

She snorted though, and he looked at her. He was not ruining his own reputation! He frowned at her, but Edgar made him feel better by scooting closer. He liked birds, he decided then, because they were pretty chill and didn't just run in a wheel all day.

At least Booder was in great shape.

"I guess Watson is your scorpion? I bet that's awesome. I've never seen one. You know, in real life I mean. I never thought you could have one as a pet, but I guess you can pretty much keep anything if you're smart about it," he laughed.
PostPosted: Sun Jun 13, 2010 7:38 pm

Quite suddenly, it felt like he had sunk them into deeper waters and she had no idea how to answer. She didn't know the full story behind what he was telling her he was frustrated; his mannerisms once more, seemed to hint at loneliness, and again it was something she could identify with, "That's ironic," she told him, "I didn't know her either. Not really. I should've. But I didn't. I don't know what her favorite food is... and I don't know what she likes to do in her spare time. I don't know anything about her, but she's very important to me," she knew that sounded strange - how was it possible to care for someone you barely even knew?

Angela didn't know how to explain it, and probably couldn't have if her life depended on it at that very moment. She did, however, get where he was coming from; she'd sort of been there too.

But then, he was frowning at her, and she sunk and inch into her seat, "I'm sorry, you just... sort of reminded me of someone. I couldn't help it," nevermind that she was referring to the fact she'd met him that previous night, and for her, this meeting was a bit of a deja vu feel, "I wasn't laughing at you. I was laughing with you. There's a difference."

She watched the bird as he settled more comfortably on the boy's lap, fluffing himself up, looking like he was actually enjoying the attention it was receiving, "Actually, they're quite easy to keep. You can't really handle them, for the most part, but they're quiet and require very little care," reaching to her side, she grabbed the case of her violin and placed her instrument in it, "I'll show you one day," it only then ocured to her, that she'd slipped, and that for him, this was their first meeting - Angela kicked herself mentally, but did not stop. Instead, she stood from the bench and extended her arm in front of him, offering him her hand - reminiscent of the way she'd done so the previous night, "Come. I'll treat you to ice cream, for cheering me up," that was technically the second time he'd done that, "Do you like ice cream?"

Nathan was surprised by what she was saying. It was like she was going through the exact same thing he was. Boy, that would be awkward if Tony had knocked up a different prostitute and had a different kid he didn't know about... of course, he didn't want that because the last thing Nate wanted was a half sister.

He preferred her company this way, as a friend. Or. Mostly stranger with a vague familiarity about her. And anyway, they were introduced and talking so they might as well be friends, right?

"You will?" he looked at her in surprise when she said she'd show him the scorpion. Did that mean she wanted to meet up again sometime? He certainly couldn't complain about that, wanting to, but he didn't really know how to ask. That was always the awkward thing about making friends, and why he had virtually none. The whole 'keeping' them thing, and coming up with how to meet up again.

He blinked at her hand, deja vu hitting him, but smiled and nodded. He carefully shooed Edgar from his lap before he took her hand, shaking it firmly, then giving it a playful tug as he got up from the bench. She bumped into him because of it, and he laughed.

"Ice cream is always good. Particularly if I'm not paying for it," he grinned.

No, her family life was so ordinarily... normal that it was almost boring (almost, not quite - Angela wouldn't have changed it for the world, no matter how much glamor others seemed to have that she lacked), "Why not?" she answered his question with one of her own and a smile, well aware that she'd slipped, but unwilling to take it back. This made things mildly easier on her anyhow, didn't it? Strange and... awkward, but all the easier at least.

It kind of felt like cheating though, knowing that she had a head start and that he wasn't aware of it, "Ask and you shall receive," she had absolutely no idea his problem was that he was awkward around people and had no idea how to hang onto people. After all, she was the type of person that voiced what she wanted, or needed as the precise moment it came to mind. Granted, that often time landed her with scowls for speaking her mind, but it had it's upside too in that she didn't feel the need to hide from others.

The raven hooped off the boy's lap, offering him a disapproving 'caw' for moving when he'd been oh-so-comfy, but soon enough opened his wings and flew up to peer down at them from the branch of a nearby tree.

Angela spared the bird just a glance before she felt her hand tugged. For some odd reason, she hadn't been expecting him to tug, or maybe she miscalculated her strength (after all, like this... she was like any other, normal seventeen year old girl), but the force sent her stumbling into him. In her defense, she'd been looking at Edgar and had been caught off-guard. She grabbed onto him for support, almost dropping the violin case and blinked, "Uhm," okay, now she seemed distinctly embarrassed, but doing a good job at trying to ignore it, "What flavor?"

Nathan grinned at her, noting the color in her face. She looked embarrassed now, which was not surprising. He had tugged her to fall on him. So he looked at her and smiled apologetically, offering to take her violin case for her.

He could be polite when he wanted to.

"Uh, I don't know," he said with a shrug, "whatever you're getting? I'm not... the most... I don't know a lot about ice cream, really. Besides the three basic flavors." He didn't go out for ice cream at all when he was young, and if he got any he either stole it or was given it by someone else.

So he wasn't the best to hang out with anyway, because not only did he not know how to ask for more than one meeting, but he didn't know what to do when they did meet up. He wasn't versed in video games, his home too poor for them, and all he had was music he played only kind of well, and paintball.

But maybe he could learn a few things from his new friend? He didn't know. He wouldn't force it: that would just make it feel like work.
