The setting: The old Squad 2 training grounds. Why Squad 2, you may ask? Because that's where Fefnir first got his training, and he wanted to visit! It's basically a large field fenced in by trees on all sides. Various racks of training equipment have been placed tactically in various places and hold things like reiatsu limiters and medical kits alongside assorted wooden and real weaponry. There's an obstacle course in the distance, and a running track that's been beat to all hell from one red shinigami's constant use when he was a VC there. It's getting to be dusk, just before the sun disappears completely, and a roaring fire is burning to illuminate a portion of the grounds for the training that will commence there tonight.

Fefnir sat idly by the fire, much closer than he actually ought to have been, and pushed another log in, causing the blaze to spit sparks upward into the air. The heat felt good on his skin, since he had the problem of being several degrees hotter naturally than the outside temperature even on record settingly-scorching days and as a result was always chilly. This night was one of those where it's close enough to spring to get down into the forties at night, so he'd built the flames a little bigger than normal not only to cast out some light, but to provide some warmth to his young trainee and himself, whenever said trainee got there. In Zenny's defense, however, Fefnir was rather non-specific about the time, having simply used 'sundown' to indicate when the boy should show up.

He could wait, though. The memories were keeping him entertained.

The small boy walked aimlessly about the old grounds, having just gotten there moments ago. He'd simply landed from the sky of course, after having jumped over a wall to enter the training grounds. His odd actions had no point, but hopping walls was always fun for children. "Hope I'm not early~.." The small boy commented aloud to himself, looking either way in search of his captain. The first thing to catch his attention was the rather large flame that seemed to be blocking the view of another red object. With a smile, Zenny began to sprint towards this heat source.. Now that he thought about it, it got really chilly near this time'a day and a fire would surely prove necessary! Only when he closed in did he actually notice the man sitting very close to the blaze was his own teacher for the day! "Mr. Feffy-nur! I found ya'!" A squeaky little voice filled to the brim with excitement was what could best describe Zenny's response to meeting the man here. "I thought maybe I'd be early, or late.. Turns out I got here at a reasonable time, aye..? I can't wait to get started! Hope I get to shoot destructo-beams at stuff!" Excitement welled up within the young boy as he circled the flames in a trance-like state, happily blabbering on in an inaudible fashion.

Fefnir laughed a little bit. Zenny was two of his favorite things: a child, and, slightly more importantly, a competent shinigami in his own right. In fact, the entire point of bringing him out tonight was not restricted to one plan of study, but rather, the red man had something else in mind along with shikai to train the boy for. That was for later, though. Now, the first part of the training would have to commence, and Fefnir would decide based on how it went if he'd give the second part.

"Hey now!" the captain said, holding up a hand to stop the energetic lad, if not by the symbol of it then by his slight form meeting the hand in his revolutions around the bonfire, "Calm it down, now. Part one 'a this thing is gonna leave you with a MASSIVE headache, 'cause I'm gonna have to knock you out before you can talk to your zanpokuto spirit. I don't know how much or how little you know about yours, but generally they're pretty good about giving you shikai when you," Fefnir used his free hand to do air quotes at this part, "'Prove yourself' to them. So, you prolly oughta ask whatever your spirit is if it needs to have proof that you're worthy of shikai. To be honest, in my experience, it's not such a big deal, and most spirits just tend to teach you something and kick you back to consciousness," The red judge gave the boy a smile to reassure him a bit before standing up... and realizing just how short Zenny was, comparatively. Fefnir was 6' 3" without his shoes on, and he still dwarfed his young ward by at least a foot or so. He's still got time to grow, at least... the captain mused, But he's a bit underweight too... He probably hasn't been eating properly balanced meals. That's something to remember to ask about later.

"So, you ready to take some blunt force trauma to the head in the pursuit of awesome abilities?" Fefnir finished, removing the sword from his belt, sheath and all, and holding it loosely in his dominant hand, the left, and ensuring he was ready to catch the boy's body after the blow landed.

Stopped by an outstretched arm, the boy began to slow his circular descent. He ended up coming to a full halt a few feet beside his captain, mouth open slightly as he listened with curiosity. "So I gotta get hit in the head or somethin'?! That's cool! I can't wait to tumble all round an'.. Wait. I just remembered I don't like getting hit. Hmm.. I guess if it's required, then so be it! I'll complete my magical head trauma trial and come out with a magical death laser shooting cannon of doom!" After his exclamation, the child performed a short leap, hopping vertically till he reached almost twice his height! In a dramatic show of excitement, he allowed himself to hover through use of basic air walk. He looked pretty silly in mid-air, raising his left arm over his shoulder so that he could grab the hilt of his sealed weapon. Still floating he drew the weapon and allowed it to point towards the dimmed sky. It really was getting late, now that he was in a better position to stare upwards and towards the fading clouds. "Hmm. Floating a few feet off the ground really makes the sky look closer. I wonder if this is what it's like to be super tall~" With sparkling eyes, the boy began to daydream; floating also made a Shinigami forget he was there for training.

(( short post is short ))

"Well alright then!" Fefnir answered with a smile. Then, with a swift movement, he swung his sheathed sword up, and with a sharp crack, the boy took a blow to the back of the head and tumbled down into the safety of the captain's awaiting arm. Having thought ahead, he also took the opportunity to lay the boy down and utilize a cool invention he'd grabbed just for such an occasion: a pillow that could be filled with water in order to give it a cold feeling. Nearby, and not readily illuminated by the fire, was a small campsite consisting of a single tent (Fefnir would not need to sleep for another few days) and various amenities in a small bag. Carefully, he selected what he needed from a bag, and set aspirin in the smallest caplets he could find and a juice box aside for when Zenny awakened.

In the meantime, Fefnir retrieved his guitar, specially made in Squad 12 to look like it was constantly burning, and began to play lightly to kill the time in between now and then.

..It Started With A Snore..

The boy awoke to snoring.. A familiar snoring though. His eyelids slowly pried themselves open, the once-light sound growing louder as his vision began to recover. He had the strange feeling that he was laying down on something very flimsy, and almost felt as though he could move and tip the thing over any second now. At the time, he didn't wanna attempt any movement anyway.. His hazy vision would have prevented him from telling what direction to walk in, or even face! "He-Hey.. I-Is that hair..? Is.. Is that a person..?" Zenny, obviously delirious, was staring up through a very glossed over vision. He could barely make out the woman's face above him.. Wait!? There was a woman's face above him.. it was looking down at him! Wh-What.. No!? It was hanging down towards him! Upon realizing this, his vision refocused and his eyes shot to there full opening capacity. He was staring up at a pretty, older, and much more mature face.. The face of a grown woman, her head hung down towards his own in a lounging position. Grasped beneath her chins were both hands, cupping the area lightly. Her mouth was slightly open, whistling coming out every so often. She seemed so peaceful.. Even more peaceful then this lake they were atop! "Woah, it's the specific' ocean!" The boy lip-synced this once, his head springing up a half a foot so that he may gaze around the woman's (,and his own,) position. Further inspection told him that they were on a rather large lillypad, in the dead center of what would appear to be an ocean! Scattered atop this body of water were several other large lillypads, these all resembling the one he now lay on; there only significant differences were what was atop them. This, the one he lay on, was the only one with a woman atop it. the others were shrouded in flowers.. To be more exact, one type of flower in particular: Lotus. His eyes suddenly grew to there peak opening points, his mouth also falling agape. They were all beautiful and huge to boot! He'd never seen Lotus with that size, and so full of color! He couldn't help but sit and stare, oblivious to the shuffling behind himself. Unbeknownst to him, the woman was getting up.

She now stood hovering above him, her arms folded and her mouth growing into an 'O' shape. She yawned aloud, smacking her lips together lightly. Her eyes were half closed, lazily drifting lower and lower until they were mere slits staring down at the back of the child's head. "Aye.. kid..? Why the hell're ya' here.. I was kinda in the middle of sleeping... Your presence sorta woke me up, and I hate being woken up. A gal needs her sleep, ya know..?" As the woman finished asking her question, Zenny swiveled around and repositioned himself to a sitting position, looking up with confused eyes. "Wha--..?! O-Oh, I'm sorry.. See I got knocked out and sent here to talk with some spirit thingy about my Zanpakuto. I must be in the wro- Wait a minute!" Catching on a bit to late now, Zenny began shuffling to his feet. Once there, he stared upwards into the woman's face with a warm smile. He was obviously excited to be meeting this woman. If he was correct, she was his.. "... Zanpakuto spirit..? You mean the soul that dwells inside of a Shinigami's personal weapon..? Enh. Sounds like it could involve some sort of work.. I don't know if you've heard, but I own't like work. Sorry. Goo-bye~.." With that the woman swiveled on the ball of both her feet, nonchalantly shifting both arms to a folded position behind her back. Following that motion she proceeded to leap forward, a large lillypad suddenly revealing itself from a spot twenty or so feet away from where the first one was. Her silent step away from the first lillpad was a very graceful sight, Zenny being stunned as she effortlessly leaped the distance. Sure, he was a Shinigami and he too could leap that far but.. he sorta had to try. She didn't even seem to emit any spiritual energy as she jumped.. In fact, she didn't have a presence! All spiritual beings had a spiritual presence, and he was sure Zanpakuto spirits were no exception to this rule. He'd been alerted to the fact that the user and spirit had similar presences but.. She lacked one, and his was pretty dang obvious. It was peculiar to him.. Maybe she wasn't his spirit after all. "A-Aww.. B-But.. I'm in the inner world and everything. I don't get'et! We're the only two here and she just said she didn't wanna be my partner!?" Zenny was speaking aloud, his eyes beginning to tear as he stared at the woman in the distance. She was messing with the earphones on her head, tapping them and then dropping into a criss-crossed sitting pose.

. . .
In the distance, the woman sat muttering some words to herself. She seemed sort of bothered about something, both her eyes closing.. And then reopening. She seemed like a person who couldn't sleep, and that seemed to upset her like nothing else in the world could! "Dammit! That kids over there whimperin' and s**t... I can't sleep with his little chibi eyes stuck in my head, shroudin' my vision every time I ******** close the damn lids! The kids prolly not gonna go anywhere till he raises the damn pond's water level another five feet.." The woman suddenly slumped her shoulders, sighing heavily before getting up. She rolled her eyes, before turning around and motioning for the kid across the pond to get the hell over there. "Kid. Ge'da hell over here! I guess I should prolly talk to ya' a little bit.. At least enough to getcha outta here, and outta my hair.." As she finished speaking, she watched the boy regain his lost spark; She almost lost her balance, watching the kid ghandi hop the distance, landing at her feet within a few seconds. The large lillypad she stood atop of shook crazily, almost dumping the two of them off. The woman scoffed aloud, turning away slightly then face-palming herself. Maybe she'd regret callin' the boy over after all. Still holding her hand on her face, she began to turn back and look down at the child. "I'm your spirit, yes..? You got that much already, hunh ya' dimwit..? Fine. Good. I guess your expectin' me to just tell you ma' name hunh..? Well, truthfully speaking, I don't wanna. Noone knows my name, and I like being able to sit down and sleep all the time without people shoutin' at me. I appreciated the time when ya' just carried me around in my sealed state, using your frilly little magic spells. No name callin'.. No wakin' me up. A pretty good life, if I do say so myself. But whatever, lets get to the point. I don't like talkin' and I just wanna get this bull over with." She sighed once more, her eyes coming to a close as she suddenly brought her arms out from behind her back. She crouched down on one knee, coming eye level with Zenny. "To come in sync with me, ya' gotta calm down. I know, already, that your emitting my spiritual energy all the time.. hell, I'm emitting yours as we speak. The only difference is, you emit it kinda awkward when compared to my own 'Style'.. To release me, you gotta know how to do'et my way. The calm way. To do this, ya' gotta manipulate your spiritual flow and let'et come out like mines.. Docile. Ya' see, your personality, actions, and thoughts control how your flow self consciously acts. If your into a fight, your energy comes out a darker green and it's more potent; your stronger, and more willing to do whatever is ahead of ya'. When your yourself, your aura is very very dim and attractive. It's almost like a sweet aroma, that draws in people and things. Your energy becomes more like a pheromone stimulator or somethin' weird like that. Finally, I'll tell ya' bout my aura. It's, as I said before, docile. It's calm. It's got no aggression, no love, nothing. It's the basis from which your own emotions are able to change it into different colors and feelings. Now, I'm done talking.. Here's my second to last sentence: To come in sync with me, you gotta rid yourself of emotion and simply release neutral energy." She smiled slightly after finishing, both eyes closing as she continued to stay crouched before the boy.

Zenny, nodding in response, simply stood staring at the woman. So this was his spirit.. This lazy, sarcastic, and extremely dull woman was his spirit. But whatever, that wasn't pertaining to the task at hand.. if he wanted to learn her name, then he'd have to become more like her.. in energy flow at least. "I'm actually pretty skilled at spiritual energy manipulation!" The boy smiled again, closing his eyes and getting to work. He found himself visibly manifesting his energy as usual, this time allowing it to seep out and completely shroud his frame. The energy was a darker green.. just like the woman had described earlier. He was surprised at this, the energy fading back into his body. "She was right.." He sighed slightly, drooping his shoulders down as he tried again. this time around, his energy released from around him in a spiraling form. The beautiful release was of a light green color orientation, showing that he was in fact calmed down to some extent. However, he was doing it wrong and it showed by color alone. The woman smiled slightly, backing up a step or two so that she may watch his entire body. Zenny was obviously determined to get this, trying over and over again: His energy would become dim, then flare, then dim, then he'd quit.. he'd be outta it, and then repeat the pattern till he was out again! "Dang. The kid's already able to fluctuate his energy type at will.. I see why he's so good at those magic spells'a his." The spirit silently admired her other half, surprised to see how well he was doing even through failure. She'd been sleeping way too often it seemed.. She was missing out on watching the kid develop. "If he gets this down pat, I'm gonna have to stay awake more often.." As she watched, she contemplated this idea and thought over how tolerable it was. "Hmph... I'm jumping the gun.. The kid's prolly not gonn--.." The woman's eyes abruptly grew to there widest point for the first time since the boy had entered. She was slightly taken aback by the child before her, emitting a translucent and sludgy aurora. It looked as if he were encased in an oily, jellylike substance. "Wait.. His pressure's faded.. All the way.. It's aligned to a neutral state, jus' like mines!" With one eyebrow raised, she began to step forward, hovering over the boy and staring down with accusing eyes.. He was grinning ear to ear, both eyes completely shut as he faced her gaze. After a few seconds of silence between the two, the woman began to emit her own energy in one huge, and silent, burst. The only way one could tell it was so huge was the sight of it. The sight of both Zenny and the woman's two aurora's melding was one of huge proportions, her own enveloping his until they stood within a sparkling green mist atop the pond. Neither of them could see but a few feet in front of themselves, there bodies barely visible within the heavy fog of spiritual energy. From all around Zenny came a brief echo, with a stern yet separated voice. The image of the women before him slowly dispersed, turning into light spiritual particles. The particles fluttered lightly, embracing Zenny and tickling his nose. He stood giggling as a voice began to speak. "My name's Sunao Rotasu.. You officially have permission to call for my help, when things get too rowdy.. I'll be keeping an eye on ya', so we'll keep in contact. Now, lemme tell ya' how to call me.. " The voice faded to a low tone, at the same time the fog began dissipating.

Where Zenny stood before being knocked out was suddenly shrouded in a greenish mist of spiritual pressure. This cloud quickly began to wisp about, surrounding the boy in the center of it's body before spreading out. When things finally came too, Zenny was revealed holding his former Zanpakuto vertically above his head, in his left hand. His legs were spread shoulder width apart, and the child began his release chant! "Serene Essences. Beckon Upon The Embrace Of My Calming Call. Let The Sweet Rays Induce Them.. Sunao Ro-tasu." As he completed the phrase, the lotus shaped guard of his Kodachi began to spin at a slow rate, building speed before gaining it's own green aura. Eventually the aura seemed to convert the emerald replica into an actual lotus, glowing and separating from the guard in every direction. The petals spread out around the guard area, still glowing, as they were held floating in those positions. The blade had grown slightly to the size of Wakizashi, retaining it's former design despite the rotating petals that now surrounded his released weapon. "Cool.." Zenny lip synced the awkward response, giggling as he stared up at his weapon. Oddly enough, the boy now lacked a spiritual presence.. Even though he had released, it had grown extremely low and insensible..?! The child couldn't be spiritually tracked, though he stood out in broad daylight. This peculiar ability was all that was revealed so far by the release, Zenny leaving the pose and dropping his weapon so that he may further examine it in his hand. "Soooo... Um. Whatta' you do..? I heard releases had these really cool abilities, and the Shinigami became more powerful and stuff! I can't even feel my own spiritual energy.. It feels like yours, so I can't sense it! This weapon looks just like my last one too.. The only difference are these rotating petals! It looks like a satellite or somethin'!" Zenny grew a frown on his face, and his head sunk down.. he seemed sorta confused and upset that his Zanpakuto didn't shoot death lazers or hyper compressed beams of fire. "Kid, I'm not that into fighting to be honest.. I'm a bit' more mellow then other spirits. Hell, I can't even hurt people. Try slitting your own wrist two or three times.. Ya' won't feel a thing.." The child hesitantly complied with her request, lifting the weapon and watching the petals slowly rotate a few times. He shrugged slightly, then closed his eyes before giving his wrist a slight slash or two. He winced for a second, awaiting the feel of cold steel ripping into his flesh.. Instead, there was nothing. He almost broke down and cried at that point, dropping to his knees and drooping his head. "You made my Zanpakuto into a harmless little satellite! Like I'm already not weak enough! Now, I can't even cut people.. It doesn't hurt an--.. What's this, it closes the wound too! What kinda release is this!?" the upset little boy continued to stare down at his weapon, both eyes slit as he poked at it's tip. As suspected, when he pricked his finger a bit of the oily substance that the petals were made of would coat his finger and produced no harm. "... That's cause your immune to the docile effect, dumbass. I'm a part of you, thus it won't effect you. Dammit, I gotta explain everything! The docile effect is what happens when too much of our spiritual energy type enters another person.. The energy we administer screws with people's insides like a poison. It puts people to sleep, if they overdose. To make'em OD, you gotta cut'em and let our spiritual energy siphon into them.. When you cut someone who isn't yourself, a petal dissipates and he spiritual particles enter and then close the wound. No ones hurt indefinitely, but the docile effect takes over. They get fatigued.. sleepy.. tired. They can't fight anymore, if there too 'Drugged Up' on our spiritual energy. I can't harm people. But I can sure as hell put'em to sleep.." The whole time the woman spoke, Zenny's attention was caught. Since he could only hear her voice, echoing in his head, he stared down at the rotating petals around the base of his weapon's blade. he became much more interested at this point, keeping all his attention on memorizing every word she said. ".. Your objective, when we're fighting together, is to get as many cuts in as possible while keeping them oblivious to whatever the hell is going on.. that is until it's too late. You weaken them, make'em groggy, and put'em to sleep. Knock'em unconscious. Finish'em off, and do as you please after that.. Whatever, I don't care! This shouldn't be too much of task, because your spiritual presence is hidden. Your also pretty tiny, for a Shinigami.. Stay concealed and you'll be fine, I guess.. Now. Lemme alone! No more whinin'! Ya' know what I do, and all that so lemme just rest. I haven't been up this long since.. Well, this is my first time even waking up for more then a few minutes! I got some sleep to catch up on, so finish up here.." With that, the woman's voice finally faded from his head. His attention was snapped back into full force, Zenny smiling as he stood again. "So this is what my Zanpakuto does, hunh..?! Puts people to sleep, and closes there wounds! No doom blast.. No cannon blast. No hyper beams.. Enh, I can live with that I guess~!" The child's face lit up once more as he pointed his new weapon towards Mr. Feffy-nur. Of course, he wasn't hostile in this motion and began using his free hand to wave towards the older man. "It's done! I got'et!"

The night was a bit cooler than Lerato thought it would have been and as such was a bit remorseful that he hadn't brought his white track jacket with him. Instead, he walked to his training with only his white sleeveless button-up to keep out this night's chill. After walking around lost for what seemed like an eternity he finally caught a glimpse of a fire and almost immediately after noticed Zenny's reiatsu become almost invisible, having to stop and strain to catch even a faint whisper of it; something completely foreign to him. Becoming worried for his friend and squad mate he began to sprint, only the worst possible outcomes coming to mind as he rushed to his superior and the boy. Coming into view and sliding to a stop Lerato realized, embarrassingly late, that Zenny was more than just okay. He was barely able to choke out his thanks to no one in particular through his panting, looking up only once he had recovered his breathe.

He didn't bother looking at either of them before he started to explain himself. "I..." he panted, "I thought he was, well... you know." He tried his best to straighten his hunched over posture and try to make himself look even a bit less frantic then he had just moments before. Looking over to Zenny with a crooked grin and foxed eyes he offered a hand. "Let me be the first besides the Captain to offer my congratulations." Looking over his shoulder towards the older man with the flaming guitar he chuckled, "The place was a bit harder to find then I had expected. The grounds were like a labyrinth, and I just so happened to choose the wrong direction at each corner. Had it not been for your fire, and your guys' smoldering reiatsu, I would never have found my way out."

Much more quietly than he'd really have realized, Fefnir placed his instrument on the ground beside his stone seat and rose, quickly grabbing the painkiller and juice box he'd set aside for the child and walking it over to him with a gentle smile. It wasn't until a moment later that he realized he couldn't feel anything but the slightest of inklings of the boy's spiritual pressure. Now, coupled with the fact that he was one of the most skilled shinigami in the Sereitei when it came to tracking spiritual signatures, the only answer was that Zenny's shikai was doing something to keep him concealed. That was quite the ability, and it was definitely going to aid him in situations where he needed to get the drop on a foe. On further inspection, the weapon seemed to have become a little shorter than it was before, and there were little bits floating around it as well, and while the red man didn't know what the shikai release did, he was sincerely hoping it wasn't death beams like the kid had wanted. There was no way such a hyperactive guy would be able to handle that much power without doing irresponsible things with it to entertain himself.

He looked straight at his ward, older than his demeanor would suggest, and offered him the pills and drink, providing only a soft "Take these," for instruction before giving his congratulations to the third seat. " I knew you could do it, Zenny. Way to go! You're not out of the woods yet, though; someone else should be on their way right now to-"

Mid sentence, Lerato appeared, doubled over and attempting to catch his breath.

"Ah! Well there he is now!" The captain announced, his head turning to look at the two squad members each in turn, first the younger... "Zenny, Lerato is going to be getting his shikai release as well tonight, or so I hope, and then tomorrow, you two will be slugging it out to learn how to use your new weapons," ...then the newcomer. "Lerato, I'm glad you got here in one piece. Hope you're ready for some of the hardest training you've done so far! Get yourself ready to meet your spirit, and when you're ready, let me know. I'll knock you out, and well get things on the road, okay?"

After straightening his back, and letting oxygen once again flood his lungs he laughed, giving a weak thumbs up in approval. "No problem Captain. I've never been one to shy away from training, nor a chance to meet a new friend." He gave a huge cheesy smile as he looked over at the third seat; still in complete shock at his lack of reiatsu.

"You know, you scared me Zenny. I was convinced you were... well... under the weather to say the least. So, are you almost ready to see what lies waiting in the darkest parts of our soul? To do battle with a partner attune to ourselves to such a degree that you could quite literally talk to each other without ever saying a single word?" He almost giggled, giddy from the mere thought of getting shikai.

Taking one last deep breathe he prepared himself for the on coming instructions from Fefnir. "So Captain," he grinned, giving a slight nod in the red man's direction, "I take it you're going to hit me now? Or perhaps you'll choke me until I lose consciousness.. You know, let's just go with the first one. The second one sounds a bit more scary, like drowning almost."

(( GAR... College stuff sucks. Shoulda done this before, but s**t happened. Short and simple. ))

Choking was tempting, seeing as very few people accept that as an option, but logic got the better of the captain on this occasion. First things first, though: he trotted over to the painkillers and set aside another two caplets, then reached into the bag nearby and pulled another juice box out, placing it next to the medicine. Then, no questions asked, Fef removed the sword from his belt once more, sheath and all, and delivered a swift blow the back of Lerato's skull. It was a little bit astonishing just how quickly he closed the gap between himself and his seated member, but nowhere near as fast as he could travel when he really wanted to. He extended the same courtesy he had for Zenny and eased the man to the ground with his free arm before replacing his weapon on his belt.

You're such a barbarian, you know that? a droning baritone voice muttered in the back of the red man's mind. The phoenix, Kaji, was always ready to throw an insult wherever he could.

Hey, it gets the job done, stupid parakeet... Fefnir responded with a metaphysical shake of the head and shrug of the shoulders.

[Lol I bet. Thanks for the post by the way. I'll come back tomorrow to edit this and make it all pretty. For now it'll just be black. All pretty now smile ]

The fifth seat barely had enough time to watch his Captain trot over and place something aside before he felt a sudden quick pain at the base of his skull. It seemed as though it took forever for him to finally fall into blackness, his vision fading in and out so quickly that he was made nauseas when he tried to focus on any one thing in particular. Then he was out. He fell through the blackness, the air surging past him whistled at his ears and frayed the ends of his clothing. By the time he was able to open his eyes, to see past the tunnel that was trying to devour his sight it was too late and he went plunging into an ocean. Cold. Constricting. There wasn’t any form of life to be seen anywhere under it’s depths. He shook his head and let the cool current flow over him as the water washed away his drowsiness. Once he was satisfied with his new found alertness, maybe two or three minutes after first entering the frigid waters, he began to swim to the surface.

There was ocean as far as the eye could see with only a floating mass similar to a dying sun to break the monotony. A screech came from above him, his eyes shooting up to seek out it’s cause. Two giant birds circled overhead. “Birds? I have a couple of birds as my guiding zanpukato spirit? This is a rip off. How in the hell am I even supposed to talk to ‘em?” The only answer he could think of would be to use Hoho. So after gathering reiryoku under himself he jumped, expecting to be sent flying forward on his journey to finding out what exactly was going on; alas he only made it a few feet into the air before being drawn back down just above the surface of the water. “I can’t use Hoho here?” He questioned, realizing how stupid it must have looked to the two beings flying above.

“Did you expect anything less?” The voice of a woman came from behind him, sickeningly sweet, icy and melodic. Just as Lerato made a motion to turn around a swirling of wind rushed around him, blurs of red and black, blue and yellow containing him in a tornado-like vortex. As the wind died down he was able to see chains being dropped from the talons of the two birds that had flown over head. The creatures were massive with silken feathers coating the entirety of their bodies. “I expected more from you Lerato. Honestly. I’ve seen many other shinigami take the easy way out when searching for a way here; but I thought you would have exhausted yourself to come, apparently you fancied yourself too good to worry of such things, eh?” Her voice was cruel, even sinister as she walked around him and firmly planted her foot in the back of his knee pushing him to the ground. He had begun to say something when she placed her foot on him once again, this time in the middle of his shoulder blades and kicked him over with ease. “You’ll speak when I say you can speak. I’ve spent years trying to communicate with you and you ignored me. Now that you want something, you think you can walk in and simply demand it?”

Lerato struggled to his knees once more, looking up at her with icy blue eyes. “What do you mean you’ve been trying to talk to me? All you’ve done is squawk and make noises since I’ve gotten you. How in the hell would I be able to decipher that?” He barked. At first he thought she wasn’t going to respond, but was pleased to see her lips turn up into a smile. A second later, however, he was sent flying back as the lithe woman spun around and thrashed him with a crescent kick. After rolling to a stop several meters later something occurred to him. ‘How can there be three of them. Sure, there are people with two who share a single entity, but three is unheard of..’ Lerato went to open his mouth again but was quickly met by a foot set directly over his nose.

“What did I tell you, Lerato? This isn’t a Quid Pro Quo. You don’t get to question me until I allow it. Now. Let me tell you how this is going to go: first, I’m going to explain to you how you should have gotten here, then I’m going to explain about this place and my pets, and lastly you’ll answer me a few questions, after that you’ll have the privilege of asking me you’re questions and lastly I’ll decide whether or not you’re worthy of wielding my power and if you are I’ll release to you my name.” Snapping her fingers twice made the two giant birds hop their way over to her, surprisingly quiet for their large stature, and sit down. “You two are some of the only reliable people I know.” She said with a kind smile, patting the two majestic beasts on the their massive heads before climbing on the red bird of wonder and turning her stone-like gaze back onto the man. “You realize you’ve taken the easy way out in doing this right?” She allowed him only to nod. “Good, then I guess I won’t have to spend too much time explaining to you how utterly stupid it was to let yourself get knocked out without a fight. All great shinigami fight for their life, fight to protect and survive and to get stronger. You, however, wanted to get it over with, and as such I had to restrict you’re reiryoku. Had you come here on empty, I would have been able to determine your resolve much easier and we’d be able to skip to the heart of the matter. You’re a damn fool in rushing things. Next time, do what you’re heart desires and not what your mind commands. It will keep you alive in battle. Now, take a good look around,” she motioned with her arms to the expanse surrounding them, but when she saw he wasn’t looking she snapped, “I said look you fool!” Watching him jump back and quickly look around she let a half grin creep onto her face. “Now, try to single out my spiritual signature.” She smiled, knowing he would fail. Once she had had her laughs from his puzzled face she raised a solitary finger. “This entire domain is created, sustained, and balanced by the sheer might of my existence. From the water on which you kneel to the star which allows us to see and even the lightening which flashes around us, it’s all because of me.” She smiled, sliding down the snout of Roc. “These two are my pets, and contrary to what you’re thinking, no, they don’t help make up our surroundings, nor our power. They live here for the sole purpose of keeping me company and giving shape to our ends and even our communication.” She laughed as the realization of what she had just said came over his face. ‘Squawking… the b*****d called my pets’ songs squawking…’ “Now is the time for Quid Pro Quo, dear boy. I ask you something, you ask me something. You often wonder to yourself if you’re good enough, strong enough to surpass those whom doubted you. You wonder if you’re fast enough and agile enough to out maneuver them. With all these thoughts running through that little head of your’s it’s surprising you can think of anything else, but to know you actually can think about something else answer my first question. Why do you fight Lerato, and don’t give me some bullshit answer about how you want to protect those you love, or how you want to be the cause of world peace. I want the truth.”

Lerato didn’t even stutter, his voice strong, “You don’t have to worry about me lying to you. I want revenge. Revenge and hatred reside at the core of all needs to protect, to worry, and to fear because all of them stem from the same cause, which is having seen someone you love get hurt in the past. I want my revenge on the evils that caused that. And I will have it with or without you.” His glacier blue eyes burned with an intensity that mimicked that of the blue lightening flashing in the sky around them. “Now I must ask two things that have been bugging me. The first is easy enough; why can’t I use Hoho here? The next though is something that’s been on my mind for years. I see that you like to play with electricity. Oddly enough, whenever I use electric based kido they seem over-powered. Why do I get the feeling you’re the one behind it?”

“You can’t be that thick skulled can you? Okay, let me explain it to you this way… how hard is it for you to stand when under the pressure of a captain’s reiatsu? Now think about it. You’re in my domain, kid. The only reason you aren’t being squished into a pancake right now is because I don’t want to clean up your mess.” She snapped. ‘That should have been blatantly obvious…’ She looked Lerato up and down and slowly nodded. “Indeed I am the cause behind it. Electricity based kido will forever be enhanced by my prowess. You see, Lerato, the power that lies within me, and within you, is the manipulation of electrons and positrons as well as any thing else with a charge. Don’t misunderstand me though; you’re nuts if you think you’ll be able to completely control them already, and if you try, you’ll likely be sent to the medic ward, but with lots of practice you’ll be nigh unstoppable.” She said with a cocky grin. “Now then, you must answer my second and final question; Are you ready to fight for me, with me, and against me, to gain power you’ve never even dreamed of? To seek your vengeance on those who have harmed you, to take your revenge so that all will know your name… do you accept this challenge?” She demanded, voice booming with blue electricity cracking to life behind her.

“Of course. I need but one thing; your name.” With a grunt Lerato broke free of his chain imprisonment and stood up and walked over to her waiting for her answer.

For once the woman’s smile seemed sincere, kind and caring. “Lerato, I am the ruler of this realm, and you may finally call upon me. Listen closely because I won’t repeat this. I am Queen of the Cyan Lightening. Now, go forth and prove your worth to me.” With a chuckle she stood up and walked over to him. Her hand came to rest lightly on his face and with a surge of power and a loud clash of thunder Lerato went tumbling back to his Captain and friend Zenny.

Night had started to lift by the time Lerato had accomplished his task, the sun just starting to peek up from the horizon casting the area in an orange glow while the sky was painted a plethora of different shades of pinks and purples, oranges, reds, and even yellows. His victory was revealed by two things, the first of which was a drastic increase in reiatsu, and the second was the sudden bolt of blue lightening that struck the tent without so much as a single cloud in the morning sky. Slowly coming to, Lerato felt a large welt on the back of his head just under the base of his skull. Then he noticed that the pillow on which his head rested was damp and sticky with blood. Instinctively he rolled over, disregarding the clang of rattling chain as he reached for the two pills which had been set aside for him. ‘And he tries to act like he doesn’t care.’ He laughed to himself, swallowing them both with a bit of the juice to help them go down. That’s when he noticed the chain laying across his lap and realized his blade was no where in sight. “This… is my shikai?” He asked and heard the melody of birds of all different species to answer his question.
