"Socially Conscious Youth of Destiny City is, as the name implies, a group primarily made up of kids and teenagers who have taken an interest in the state of affairs in our city. Most of our focus is on helping young people in difficult situations: runaways, homeless families, victims of abuse, et cetera. You could call us a 'by kids, for kids' group, except there really isn't an age limit. The only requirement is a desire to help your peers."
SCYDC is a by teens, for teens organization based in Destiny City. Its purpose is twofold: not only does it support young people in serious situations, but it gives its volunteers a productive way to spend their time and teaches them valuable life lessons. Right now, SCYDC is working on addressing the outbreak of teen violence in the city by offering, among other things, self-defense lessons and peer counseling.

SCYDC is an existing organization that is stepping up in light of the outbreak of youth violence in the city. They are always looking for volunteers, and a lot of their manpower goes towards fundraising as well as education- spreading awareness and information about the problem. For people who come in, they are offering basic self-defense lessons with an emphasis on escaping attackers, and group therapy and peer counseling for people who have been attacked, or otherwise affected by the state of affairs in the city.
What does this mean for you, the player? It means a number of ways to participate in roleplays related to the ongoing war in Destiny City. Even if your character doesn't have magic or a weapon- especially then, actually- they are still able to learn how to protect themselves, help others, and really make a difference. SCYDC caters to every level of involvement, and there's RP opportunities for those who can only make one or two posts, as well as those who want to dive in and do as much as possible.
- As a preexisting organization, SCYDC has a number of dedicated volunteers. Any character is welcome to be a part of SCYDC from the beginning, or to be recruited into their ranks during one of their events.
- SCYDC constantly holds fundraisers to finance their activities. Old favorites include bake sales, car washes, and tables on the street asking for donations. Even if your character isn't interested in volunteering, they could always buy a cupcake or get cornered on the street by a zealous volunteer.
- Self defense classes are being offered to the public, free of charge. People are free to mention this in solos/other RPs, and if there's enough interest, we can start a class for people to jump into as they please.
- Group therapy is also being offered. Again, people can mention this, and if there's enough interest, we can start a group. If your character would rather a solo therapy session, SCYDC is also offering peer counseling.
- Anything else you see that could fit! Want SCYDC to partner with a health clinic? Offer advocacy for people wanting to due their attackers? Go ahead and throw it out there! As long as we can figure out how to make it feasible both ICly and mechanically, there is no idea too wacky or off-base!

Q: Who's running this plot?
A: Nobody. Or everybody! There is no one really in charge; this plot thread is just to get the idea out there/for ease of plotting.

Q: Where did that wall-of-text quote come from?
A: We Know The Neighborhood, in which a zealous volunteer talks an innocent bystander into joining the cause. Reading it is absolutely not necessary.
Wasn't this thread supposed to be for Tartaros plots?
A: While SCYDC was created during Tartaros, it only makes sense that such an organization would take a serious interest in an issue as serious as gang warfare/youth violence. In addition to keeping up with events for consistency's sake, the goal of this shift is to offer civilians a way to participate meaningfully in the war in Destiny City. Where will it go from here? Only time will tell!
Q: Where is SCYDC located?
A: SCYDC works primarily with Destiny City Community Center, and has a number of offices there. It also rents space in an office building, though this is more for the financial side of things and most people probably won't have a reason to show up there.
Q: How do you pronounce "SCYDC?"
A: Depends on the person! Most volunteers shorten it to SCY, pronounced "sky" or "sigh" (there are arguments between staffers over which way is right). It has also been pronounced "skydick," but this is not sanctioned by SCYDC officials.
Q: Is SCYDC a secret government organization?
A: MAYBE. Right now it's just a run-of-the-mill youth action group, but if, for plot purposes, it would be best for it to be a secret government organization... well, that's not very likely, but the point is we're not ruling anything out right now. biggrin
Q: What's with the thread title?
A: Plus one million points to anyone who gets the reference. 8D

... maybe I'm exaggerating a bit.
Anyway, she volunteers. whee
EDIT: plus she would need a bit of help herself, as her mother was badly injured during that event and most of her friends are stuck in Tartaros. 3nodding

Thank you for thinking of this. Yes, it's a good distinction to make! I doubt SCYDC has much in the way of assigned positions, but it's assumed that older members help out the newer ones. If there's enough new recruits, some kind of orientation might be a fun idea?
I've put a list of interested parties up in the third post because I am a compulsive lister. This doesn't mean anything other than expressed interest. No iron-clad contracts, nope.
There can definitely be a bake sale soon. Would Alessa be a new recruit or, considering her history, an existing volunteer? Either way, would she like to help with the bake sale? And we'll have to see if group therapy is workable for this. If not, Sophie will try to enforce a group hug policy or something.
