I absolutely adore the Shannara books by Terry Brooks, don't get me wrong, I own a copy of every single one. But I'm not as happy with the last two trilogies that he has written for the world.

The introduction of technology to the world makes it harder for me to feel the world now. I mean, yeah, the series spans HUNDREDS of years, but to go from a relatively low technology level to suddenly having flying ships capable of crossing an ocean.

Anyone have any thoughts on this?

Well it is not as unlikely as you make it out to be. When we think of Shannara, we put forwards a landscape untouched by modern technology, sprawling cities and industrilisation but we shouldn't let this hold in our imagination. As you say, the 'Shannara' series covers hundreds and hundreds of years; it is four hundred years between the Shannara and Heritage of Shannara series. Place this into context with the human race in real life. In 400 years we have grown from a pre-industrial civilisation to a vast, technologically advanced one, why can't Shannara do the same.

However, I must agree though that it does detract from the feel of the earlier novels. I liked the Primeval landscape the Terry Brook's vividly describes, I love the high fantasy feeling to it at times and yes, I do feel the introduction of technology does ruin that image I had.

I'm not saying that I don't like the newer books, I just wish that he had introduced the technology at a slower pace. It seemed a little sudden to go from a pre-industrial world to one where people are flying around on giant ships in only 400 years. I agree that technology would progress in the world, just not that fast.

I don't think technology takes much out of the series a all, I mean, if they started pulling guns out and what not I'ld be alittle put off, but other then that I still enjoy it just as much

I only have The Voyage of the Jerle Shannara Serise. My bookstore doesn't seem to like stocking the earlier books. I'ld like to read them as well, if only just to see what everyone is fussing over.

I actually enjoyed the latest trilogy and look forward to more books coming out. I like the idea that the Druid Council would be corrupted so quickly because they brought in older people instead of younger with newer ideas. Also the redemption of the Isle Witch was interesting and smooths the way for other books in their future world.

They're not my favorite books in any way but yeah the first ones was better than the rest. (Haven't read them all but the ones I have read)

I've noticed the most recent Shannara book has merged with the Running with the Demon series so I picked that one up instead. Hopefully I'll get around to reading it...keep getting distracted by other series lol
