Quote:
Egyptian minister: Obama told me he is a Muslim

"Obama told me he is still a Muslim, who supports the Muslim agenda."

This was a statement by Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Abul Gheit on Nile-TV. It was made on the «Round table show».

This is the statement recorded:

Adul Gheit said he had a one-on-one meeting with Obama, where the US President told him that He was still a Muslim, the son of a Muslim father, the step son of Muslim stepfather, that his half brothers in Kenya are Muslims, and that he was sympatetic towards the Muslim agenda.

Adul Gheit claimed Obama told the Arabs to show patience. Obama promised that once he overcame some domestic issues, like the Health care reform, he would show the Muslim World how to deal with Israel.

It's a very old, sickly horse that no one really cares about then. biggrin Bringing it up tends to elicit disgusted looks.

*sigh* Counting down to the elections...

Your source is... a wordpress blog?
How exactly is his religion even relevant? He would show the Muslim world how to deal with Israel... okay. So? Israel has some serious human rights issues. Look up "Israeli Ethnic Cleansing."

Yes, a wordpress blog. I know. I tried to find a better source, or the actual video, but can't. It hasn't been covered. Also, it's an Egyptian show and apparently hasn't made it onto youtube. The interview in question is also referenced in far less detail in Israel Today, on page 3, so the writer probably didn't make it up.

Religion is relevant because, whether or not you believe in it, there's no denying that it plays a major part in a person's beliefs. If he is Muslim, it was misleading for him to say otherwise to get elected.

I know Israel isn't exactly blameless. But 'show the Muslim world...?' I don't like what that implies.

Islam is no worse than Christianity. Or, if you claim it is, you can try to give a good argument as to why Islam is worse.

She didn't say Islam was bad. She said it was misleading of Obama to misrepresent himself as a Christian if he is not.

Yeah. Regardless of whether it's better or worse, the belief system is different. And it's not possible to 'leave your religion at the door,' as the saying goes. When we're talking about something that may play a significant part in how a person makes decisions, it's something voters need to know.

His religion won't influence his decisions much more than his race...

Can you give me an example of where Obama has done something where you think his religion swayed his opinion?

Do you think Bush's religion didn't play a part in the decisions he made as president?

His background in oil played a bigger part, though religion influenced Bush. I would argue it didn't play a major role in all presidents, though; it can, but it also can not.

You do realize that we have allies whose major and/or official religion is Islam, correct? Ie, Turkey. We're allies with Turkey AND Israel, which is why that whole incident could have erupted into chaos for the USA.

Calling out countries on their wrongdoings isn't exactly bad.

Don't want to argue this at the moment.

This is true, but there is no way of knowing how closely they follow the ideals of their religion beforehand. So it's valuable to know what their religion is, so we know where they're coming from - how they are likely to be influenced by their religion, if it does turn out to be a factor for them. When we're talking about the president, anything that is likely to influence his decision making process is an issue voters need to know about.

I would hope that he wouldn't be preoccupied with race enough for that to be a major factor.
