This pickled vegetable...Scientist from JCVI in Maryland successfully created a new life form. The single celled organism nicknamed "Synthia" is the first man-made gnome. Scientists had moved single genes and bits of DNA between species before but never created something entirely new. With new technology humans could design brand new animals for livestock, crops, multi-purpose bacteria, etr.

My question to this guild is simple: What do you think of this new development? ... could kick your a** !!

I will say this: If we aren't doing what God did, than what do you call it?
Someone said all we are doing is taking something already made and upgrading it like turning Windows Vista into Windows 7.
However, you have created an entirely new species that will reproduce and be completely different from any other existing species. If that's the case, we have made new life.
Who cares if we play God, though? We were given the power, the only thing we could do now is use it for good. Sure, of COURSE it will be abused and probably for scientific and war related issues, but the process of this is limitless!!!
We could actually CREATE organisms that could fully filter our water, make bacteria that could clean air and help stop global warming, create animals we could harvest as food and they wont die, ect....
THERE IS JUST SO MANY THINGS WE COULD ACCOMPLISH!!!!!! I'm glad we were finally able to do this, because this IS the next step in our evolution. We have hit the age of technology to the age of organism diffusion, a point where our technology is literally organic.
The only people I see having any fit about it are using religious points, and that's about it.

However, I would like to remind you that the possibility for ill is just as great as the possibility for good with this new technology.
Biological warfare and terrorism could become much more fine-tuned, targeting a single specific ethnic or genetic group. If we can create animals to harvest for food that don't die, then we can also create soldiers that will keep marching after being shot... etr.
Like cloning, this is a technology that has to be watched and regulated very carefully. ... could kick your a** !!

Well, I think it is arguable that they "created" life. They have copied it, and reprogrammed an existing cell. I read several of the articles and a couple scientific papers. It is another milestone achievement; they did build their own g-nome, but it is still a copy.
I think the ability to alter one species of cell into a cell for another species is much more useful, but that was done awhile back. That is the technology that they will be using when they start to create these species that have specialized purposes.
My problem with the specialized species is that there will eventually be a bungle, and what then? I mean, look at other instances in history where men have introduced other species to try to eliminate a problem, it has always turned out bad... Like the mongoose in Hawaii, or frogs in Australia, or even the python problem that is starting to develop in North America.
Now we think we will make our own species to fix a problem, they will encroach on natural species niche, and I think it will cause more damage than it will solve.
All I can say is that it is wonderful we have the ability, but it doesn't necessarily mean it is right to use.

Only problem I have with this is the fact that we are stepping into an era we are new with and, like all the other times, we have tried to barge RIGHT through it without thinking. Hopefully we will stay cautious about it this time.

it is made from existing life forms.
maybe someday after we are all dead there will truly be man-made life.
until then, it all looks like hype intended to raise capital.

All I can say is that it is wonderful we have the ability, but it doesn't necessarily mean it is right to use. I agree its like making a Windows Vista to replace Windows 7 but in actuality it does more harm then good. "Every action has a reaction." We take these ideas and use them but then we become so dependent on these advance ideas that we forget the basics. The first thing the world would probably run out of it water. One simple basic method would be to control the human population. We get so involved in things we think we need like to live to 100 that we forget to live and enjoy life, give back to the next generation so, that they can have a good life just as yours was instead on burdening them.

It's pretty cool to be honest. Though I fail how to see that this is "playing God" when we "play God" with the manipulations of our environment we do daily =
