This takes place just before the Sekigahara, or the civil war that is four years before the time of the manga.

Keikoku was leaving. The Crimson King had certainly been more kind than he should have been to a small, nameless child of the Mibu Clan. Instead of dispatching him there, the King sent him on a mission. Sure it was probably just to get the boy out of his sight, but he had spared him nonetheless. He was finally free from who he had formerly been, and it was about time he severed all ties. He was in Aokigahara, the dark, forbidden forest just outside of the Mibu lands, where forest creatures and all around bad people hung around just trying to pick fights.
"Keikoku," he muttered to himself. His former master had drawn up the name. Not bad. But not him. He needed something new. Night was falling, not that it made a significant difference in the darkness of the forest, but Keikoku conjured a small flame to lead the way. His yellow eyes were soft and unworried, but all of his other senses were heightened, ready for anything in the forest. Some creatures tried him, disguised as small children. What a laugh, like he cared for children. Immediately, he cut them down, and they disintegrated.
He returned to his path and stopped, fireflies. They were everywhere. "Hotaru," he said the name aloud to himself. He shrugged. That would work. From that moment forward, he would be called Hotaru. He looked around and realized he was lost. Okay. He would be called Hotaru if he ever met any more intelligent life. "Oops." He turned to the right, and supposed he would try this way.

Akira was getting annoyed. They had been walking all day and now that stupid meat-head Bontenmaru was suggesting they continue on through the night. Of course Akira would never complain, that was a sign of weakness, but he did, on the inside of course, hope that Kyo would protest. He tried not to drag his feet as he walked behind Kyo, but it was happening whether or not he wished it. Maybe Kyo would want to at least stop and eat? Drink?
"Kyo," Akira began, putting on his best powerful voice, as he always tried when he spoke to Kyo, "Don't we at least want to stop and get some food? Or sake even?"

Kyo, clearly not in one of his better moods if there were, looked backward at young Akira without showing any sign of slowing down said, "Why would we bother with such idiotic things," he smiled a bit, "You are my slave after all, don't you think I should be calling the shots around here?" Kyo clasped his hand on the hilt of his blade, "Or do you think differently?" Turning back around Kyo felt confident that he had scared the boy shitless.

"Sitting around on this throne all day is boring!" The Crimson King sighed, "I wish the four elders were here." He paused for what seemed like ten minutes, "I know! I will go and read a book!" The King hopped off of the ridiculously large chair and plopped to the ground leaving the grand room briskly, the room silent and empty.

Akira hung back a bit to let Kyo get a bit further away from him and sighed, "No. It's just," Akira paused for a moment before continuing, "You haven't called any shots in like, four days and now we're nearing Aokigahara, and there's nothing back there but legends in there, right?"

Kyo's mood not getting any better continued walking, "Just move," he began, "I don't want to waste any more time by having petty conversation." He increased pace just to make the boy walk faster and not worry about speech.

Bontemaru stiffed a laughed "Kyo, when have you ever had a "pretty" conversation with any one?" Folding his large hands to rest across his apposing arm "Well other then when you manage to seduce a women to your bed, but then again, is sex talk really pretty?" he mused out loud.

"He said 'petty' you bone-headed troglodyte!" Akira growled at the larger man, "Kyo, I cannot begin to comprehend why you let such an imbecile sully the air about you."

Keikoku, Hotaru rather, was nearing the edges of the forest when he sensed the travelers, and even heard two of them, they were rather loud. He stepped out of the woods, his sword already drawn, balanced on his impossibly tall tengu geta. He glared with his cold, yellow eyes at the three before him and finally, after a long silence, spoke, "Leave, and I will spare your lives."
Akira was taken slightly aback, I didn't even sense him. He put a hand on one of his blades and put on his best menacing face, waiting for Kyo to make a move.

Kyo, not even phased by the boy looked back and stared, "what were you to do if we didn't feel obliged to leave?" "What," he began looking deep into the eyes of the boy, "would you be able to do to the likes of me and my big brute of a friend I have here?"

Bontemaru ignored the boy completely. "Man I must have a load of crud in my ears, or I am finally startin to feel my age." With that said he placed one little finger in his ear and attempted to clean it out. Upon inspection of his finger he sniffed it. "Oh yep ew, that was what was in my ear!" Holding his hand out he showed the yellow brown colored glob of ear wax to Akari. "Smell it!"

Hotaru spared the larger man a glance and quickly looked back to the leader-figure. "He looks kind of stupid to me." He sheathed his sword, "On second thought. I don't have time for the likes of you."

Kyo, interested in the boy smirked and said, "Boy, come here." Kyo held out his hand, beckoning for the child to come closer. "Don't worry, I bite." Kyo smiled showing his teeth, he probably looked like an imbecile doing so, but obviously this kid wasn't intelligent.

Flicking to yellow goo off onto the road Bontemaru smiled at the young kid staring them down. "Ok brat, we get it, you think you can take us. But this here is Demon Eyes Kyo, an I'm Bontemaru, an this pip squeak here is Akira." He motioned to each person mentioned "We are the best of the best, I don't think you could handle all of us at once kiddo."

"Demon Eyes Kyo." Hotaru sheathed the long end of his blade and quickly covered the other side with a loose cloth. "This changes matters." Matter-of-factly, he continued, "I'll be joining you on your quest to do whatever it is you are doing."
The man's response left Akira pretty angered, "Kyo! He can't just join us, we don't even know what he's capable of! Let alone if he could even stand his own against any of us! All of the things in that forest talk a big game!" He turned to face the new arrival,"None of it means anything to us though!"
"Doesn't it?" Hotaru took a step to the side, so he was out of their view, he revealed behind him the path he had taken out of the woods, and apparently, he had come across some challenges. Not really challenging for him however, as these challenges were now strewn in pieces along the path to the outside of the forest. "You should close your mouth before I make it my blade's new sheath."

Fubuki entered the King's throne room with Yuan and Hishigi, the remaining three, behind him. The new, rather cocky member was with them too, but Tokito walked rather slowly behind them
until Fubuki had to call back to be sure she was keeping up. And by call back, we mean that Fubuki, in a calm voice, made Yuan yell for her to keep up.
When they got to the ground before the king, Fubuki noticed he was leaving, "Your majesty, we came to, with your respectful permission, inquire just what you were thinking allowing the Keikoku boy to live, after challenging you the way he did." He topped it off correctly though, as always, "Sir."
