This was it. Her big day. No-one elses...well, her brothers' and sisters' too, she supposed, but it was all about Ava right now! She was the important one!
Ava was hopping on the spot in excitement - she loved the sea. Swimming, the waves, the amazing variety of life under the translucent blue water...it was beautiful. Her mother didn't know it, but she'd been out swimming before, ducking her head under the waves. Preparing for the moment, really, although she hadn't been thinking about her Rites at the time. But now she was here, now she was about to do it...it all made sense.
She looked to her mother with excitement in her eyes, and as soon as she signal was given she charged. Charged at the waves with a cry of joy, not even slowing as she crashed into the waves. She only slowed when a surge of water lifted her feet off of the sand, and she was forced to swim forwards, unable to reach the sand anymore. Taking a deep breath, she ducked her head under the water, eyes bright as she looked around at the starfish and seaweed - that was even a fish, over there! She swam towards it, lungs straining to hold her breath. It was just as she reached it that she realized it was over - she'd done it! She broke the waves with a triumphant roar.
"I did it, mom! I did it!" she called as she paddled back to the shore, running as soon as she was able. She ran straight into her mother's embrace, purring loudly. She was an adult now - she was an equal, and the pride would finally accept her as such.
