The sun was just starting to set; the river flowing by was the perfect place to cool off. It was slow flowing here, perfect to swim in and Night was doing just that. The water wasn’t high; it went over her back though and if she walked a few paces she would be swimming. The whole day Night dancer had done nothing but laze about, she was getting hungry now though; however she didn’t feel like eating. She was bored, boredom always made her strange. Her image cast odd colors over the water; it was interesting to see green and blue on top the crystal clear water. Ears flicking back she touched noses with her reflection, only to get water up her nose and have to sneeze to rid herself of it.
“Smart,” she mumbled in a clear and smooth voice. She forgot why she wanted to swim, the heat was dying down and she was clean and smelling of mint leaves as she always did. Getting out she shook herself free of the clinging water, sending the spray around her to cast rainbows in the sunlight. The grass around her hooves was thick and dark, it was a nice summer; a bit too hot but she liked it for the most part. Night dancer was glad that winter was over finally, snow and ice was horrible. When it was winter she always fell, only ways had bruises as her hooves had no real ability to touch solid ground. In summer, there were fireflies as well; their glow bright and welcoming as always. Winter there was nothing at all, but in spring summer and fall there was everything.
The sun going down now was nothing; it would be back up again; not that she truly wanted it up again. Ears flicking back and tail swishing behind her she looked to her right, on the ground was a toad; his chest grew and he made a noise. Snorting Night dancer shook he head and pawed at the ground before she leaped away room the frog. Thin legs took her quite awhile away from it, in a single bound it would take her two paces to get near the creature again. Ears tightening across her head she proceeded to paw the ground, tail lashing behind her. Frogs, toads; all of those things were creepy. She didn’t like them, once she had stepped on a toad and fell right on her side. The toad was perfectly fine but she had been bruised for days! Glaring at the toad by the river she snorted again. “Go away, I was her first.”

It had struck him recently that if one is confronted with something they didn’t want to think about and couldn’t seem to simply ignore, that the best policy was to simply put as much distance between one’s self and the source of said stress. It was in this way that Kindness found himself wandering through the bush without any particular aim, except to get as far away from his home as possible. He rather liked his home but it was located in a place too near something he was rather keen not to be around so for now he was avoiding it. Not that he would admit that.
In fact he had even managed to convince himself that this was perfectly normal behavior for him and he had no alternative motives. There was always something interesting to be found and life had fallen into such a routine lately that he wanted to shake it up a bit. Just that. Kindness shook his head to clear his thoughts and let his pace slow and a small relaxed smirk cross his face. In that way he continued his path until the sun slipped past the horizon. He supposed that soon he might want to find somewhere to settle down for the evening when he heard a noise a little farther through the trees.
It was a doe, sharp colours on black making her face glow in the moonlight like a skull mask. Her ears were back and her tail flicked angrily, the combined effect making her look like some kind of swamp wraith. She was agitated, that much was clear, staring at something he couldn’t see in the dim light and shouting at it.
“Go away!” She said to it harshly. “I was hear first.”
“It’s been my experience,” Kindness said in a snarky tone as he came out into the clearing when, a cloud shifted out from before the moon to shine more light on the bank and he could see the subject of her wrath, “that toads don’t follow instruction all that well.”

Night’s attention was so fixed on the toad that when the buck showed up she jumped and her ears flew up in surprise. Seeing the bright gold and yellow colored buck she pouted and glanced back at the toad who was still sitting there looking as dull and dimwitted as ever. “That’s your experience. Still if you have you then you must have yelled at toads far more then I have to get it.” Tilting one of her ears down she looked at the buck again, such bright colors; almost looking at the sun. “Toad’s have to learn manners; they can’t just go where ever they want when they please. Often times someone else is their relaxing and having a time; then they show up and ruin it!”
Her eyes flicked back to the offending creature, again noticing with a slight sulk that it indeed, hadn’t moved. Grumbling to herself she sat down, ears falling loosely back. Icky mushy, she really didn’t like toads or frogs. They were creepy looking to; their eyes all blank and empty like they were dead. They were cold like dead to and slimy. Making a face Night wrinkled her nose and looked back to the sun colored buck. “Since you have so much experience, you make it go away.” A challenge, she herself wouldn’t touch it and if she had to she would get up and move though she had been staying at this place for quite a number of moons now and liked the spot. The sun didn’t mess with her too much, there was water and yummy watercress growing thick here and there was no frogs! Or there wasn’t till now.
It came to her, to wonder why the buck was here, it was a bit away from any herd or family she knew. It was a good walk away really. Still looking at him unashamed she tilted her head to stare at him another way. Her eyes were black, many found that unsettling but she never found herself caring if when she stared at them they felt unsettled. At least, not when the sun was just about gone.

Silly little doe, couldn’t even deal with a toad.
“I suppose I could make it go away for you.” He said with a smile and stepped over to the toad. The creature stared blackly forward, either no knowing or not caring about what was about to happen to it, its big black eyes glossy in the moonlight. Big and black, like the eyes of the doe that hated it. The thought made him chuckle as he stuck his hoof under its belly and kicked it well away, into the heart of the pond. He turned to her in standard relaxed manner to ask ‘Is that better?’ only to find her studying him intently. He raised a scaly eyebrow at her.

Night dancer watched as the buck went to the toad and with ease he kicked the nasty thing into the pond connected by a stream to the river at their side. Least she would go for a swim and find the icky thing beside her. Shuttering a bit she noticed the buck had caught her staring, amused she grinned; her tail waving behind her. “Yes that’s much better, now what’s your name? My name is Night dancer.” She gave another mist of a smile before going toward the reeds on the river bank, for a second her nose and mouth disappeared but then she pulled out holding a bushel of plants that she dropped at her feet before she went moving about again.
She liked watercress, it tasted sweet yet not at the same time. Plus it was easy to find and since so close to water she could wash it before eating it. With another bunch she shook herself of, shaking her small hooves clear of any mud that might have stuck. With a easy motion he tossed the bunch to the buck, her eyes bright with a playful attitude copied by the wing of her tail and set of her ears as they peered forward twitched only when an odd sound rung to close. “Those are really good, figured you might be hungry since as far as I know; there is nothing close to here, family herd or clan.” She started munching her own pile; content and happy now that the toad was gone.

He watched amused and curious as she rummaged about in the reeds to pull out what looked like more plants, which he recognized a little later as watercress.
“Well, always glad to be of service Night Dancer.” He said, putting a playful emphasis on her name. There wasn’t much he could tell about her yet, she seemed nice enough, playful, pretty open. He wondered if he could stay here for a while, with this doe, at least for a couple of days. True she wasn’t what he would normally look for in a companion but she was cute.
For a few moments he had managed to put all unpleasant thoughts out of his mind, but she was quick to change that. Kindness looked down, teasing grin slipping for just a moment as he pushed the food she had thrown him around with his hoof. A little flare of something sprang up in the back of his mind, bitter and warm, annoyance, anger. It wasn’t her fault, there is no way she could have known about Breakaway and… all of that, but still it made him angry. The change in his emotions was not reflected on his face and he tried to rid the feeling from his mind. He shouldn’t be getting so worked up. “A buck doesn’t need a herd to keep himself fed!” He said with a (forced) laugh. “But I thank you for the food.”
Not feeling particularly hungry, though when he entered the clearing only a few minutes ago he would have gladly ate the snack, he pushed the bundle aside for the time being moved so he was standing closer to the water and the staring doe. He wondered if anyone had ever told her it was rude to stare?
“My name is Kindness.” He told her, bowing his head slightly.

She heard the playful tone; her tail swished back and forth, her eyes brightened to mimic it silently. Eating her food she soon went from standing to lying, her tail still waving behind her. It was a habit, moving her tails and ears she would often only respond with movement rather than words. It was a habit she found often got her scolded for as other Kimitri were not sure if she heard them or not; or worse that she was ignoring them. Looking to the golden buck she wondered why he was here again. Not that she minded; just that it was odd since there really were no groups around here only loners or others who had no family such as herself.
Having been watching the buck she noticed when his smile faded and his attitude changed. It was odd to see him go from bright and cheerful to sad and, angry? What he said next caused her to jump in surprise, the laugh was like a bark almost not one she expected to hear from a buck that just moments ago; looked as if he were quite happy and just about singing. She nodded to his thanks, though she watched as he pushed it away as if it were about to bite him. With him standing closer to her however, she noticed that he was in fact angry.
“That’s a nice name; most say the name tells everything. I think their wrong because I meet a doe named bird song and her voice could make even the toads horrible songs sound like a nightingale.” She gave a small shutter at the thought of once more hearing that doe sing, so horrid. Looking again at the buck she flicked her ears, black eyes looking into yellow. “So what’s wrong, one heart beat your smiling and the next the smell of your anger could make even a bristle fur turn and run with its tail between its legs.” Still lying down she rolled then wiggled, her horns rubbing into the ground making little furrows in the dirt.
“I only mentioned that there were no families around her, and being as that is true I fail to see why that would make you angry.” Hearing the sound of a toad she rolled back to her legs though she was still lying. Ears twisting and turning she looked for the source of the noise, not happy to have heard it in the least.

Ha! Not as good at hiding his emotions as he thought he was. Either that or she was entirely too perceptive. ‘If you can tell that it upsets me, why do you bring it up?’ He wanted to ask her, but held his tongue. No he was not opening himself up to the scorn of others, if she wanted to assume things she was free too but he was not going to give her anything to work with. Kindness shook his head. No, he told himself, there really was nothing the matter. It was true that he was… fond of Breakaway but she wasn’t anything special and it didn’t hurt that she thought the same about him.
“Its nothing. Nothing important.” He eventually told her.
He looked back at the doe to find her rolling around on the ground. It was so innocent and cute he kind of wanted to step on her. She looked at him with her big black eyes. They were quickly becoming his favourite of her features. It helped that they were so different from Breakaways own bright gold eyes that he didn’t need to worry about them reminding him of her. Kindness realized that she actually wasn’t trying to be rude, she was curious. His tail twitched in irritation, he wasn’t sure if that made it better or worse, and he changed tactics; distraction.
He lay down in front of her, so close their noses were practically touching. “Kindness can be deceiving,” he warned her with mock somber, laughing in his mind at his own little joke, even if she wouldn’t get it. His tail twitched playfully and he smirked.

Night dancer snorted a bit, unsure of why something was no important. “If it wasn’t important, then I don’t think you would remember or think about it.” Scrunching her nose up she pushed a dandelion and hade to shake her head or risk sneezing as one of the fluffy seeds stuck to her nose. She looked back to Kindness, her eyes slowly blinking before they skipped to look at some small movement. It was hard to tell where she looked, for her eyes were bottomless pits and had no other color not even the white they should have had. Then again, she could not that many did not have the white as other animals might. She watched as the yellow tail twitched back and forth, angry again?
When suddenly Kindness was right before her she blinked almost owlishly as her nose was so close to his. “Can it really, I thought kindness was only that?” Her ears were twitching as she struggled to keep them from dropping at the sudden nearness of another Kimitri. His tail distracted her though, twitching again as he smirked and then held a sort of dark humor sort of mood. Finally giving up her ears fell back and she arched her neck a bit her spikes fanning apart as her skin moved. “Kindness can never deceive me, for where there is a shred of kindness no matter what happens after it was still kindness for that moment.” Ears flicking back up she moved her head forward lightly bumping her nose to Kindness own.
“You did not answer why you were here. Is there not a place that needs you more or that you would rather be?” She wasn’t trying to get him to leave; only that it was interesting to know and to ask things so she could know. The sun gone she felt happier then she was when it was up; her body merged into darkness but for her pattern of blue and green. Not bothering to move away she simply looked up to the sky; stars and the moon shown like the jewels they were with only a few clouds in the sky. Yet the smell promised rain and the sounds of crickets told the same.

For a moment Kindness wasn’t really sure what to say. He couldn’t really find it in his heart to be actually mean to this doe, but at the same time… he sighed. “If there was somewhere else I would rather be, I would be there.” Kindness said simply, with a shrug and a roll of his shoulders. He shook his head to clear his thoughts and followed her along the bank of the water. His mind had finally stopped reeling and he fell into his usual detached funk. He came up beside her - too close than maybe was entirely appropriate, if he cared about that kind of thing – and followed her gaze upward.
“Looks like rain.” He stated.

Looking to Kindness, Night suddenly smiled and spun around to face him; her back hooves just near the river edge. “Yes it does, and if it’s going to rain.” She let herself trail off, black eyes flickering behind her to look at the river. “You wouldn’t mind getting wet faster!” Raising one back leg she stomped hard into the water sending droplets spraying around like rain itself. Laughing merrily she bolted, her hooves hit the ground in small thumping sounds as she ran beside the river. Night time was so nice, cool and so alive like nothing the day ever seen. She slowed her running, turning to see if the sunshine buck would follow or not, perhaps he was mad?
He was sad, she knew he was and it was like a shove at her heart. So, why not try cheering him up. There was nothing like a good play of tag and chase to let the heart soar and the feelings rush away on the wind that would take them away. She decided then she would cheer him up, she wasn’t sure what about the word home or family bugged the buck. It was odd, she had no family herself and did not mind the words; perhaps he lost his family to the claws of a great cat. "Come play, forget everything and anything now. There isn't anyone here but me and I wont tell or judge." Her tail flicked behind her before Night ears flicked back once then she took off in a run again.
If he did not follow she wold go back and tug his ears and tail until he did chase after her if only to get back at her; but then Night would turn even that into a game.

Kindness jumped back and narrowly avoided having his coat soaked by the muddy river water. He liked to think he was always pretty alert, but he hadn’t been expecting that. For a moment he wasn’t entirely sure what had just happened, but then he laughed. He shook of the drops that clung to his orange fur and took off after the doe. She stopped and said something to him, but Kindness did not hear her quiet voice over the pounding of blood in his ears and the rush of water over the stones in the river. For perhaps the first time since he left his home, Kindness was honestly not thinking about the events of the past and truly enjoying the moment.
