Observation of the tiniest of details was key in the art of detective work; a fact that the gold and red winged stallion took to heart and used every waking moment of his life. High above the stallion’s head, the orb of the moon glowed in cloud free night; silent flapping of bats’ wings were heard over the quiet lullaby of the crickets to the sleeping world. The light of the moon cast clear view of the path in front the Angeni, whose hoof falls were inaudible to the untrained ear. It had been a long eventful week, filled with the case of the missing foal. Wystan had spent two days and a night tracking the foal’s prints to a cave that was miles away from the area in which the family resided; after talking to the foal, the detective learned that it had lost its way while playing hide and seek with its siblings or so it would seem.

The Angeni paused in the middle of the path as he shook his medium length mane, causing a few strands of his bangs to cover his icy blue eyes; he took in a deep breath of the night air, letting it fill his lungs to their complete capacity. He was silently impressed with the little foal; it took skill to make the family believe that she was lost, when in actuality it was all just a game, a trick, she was playing on her parents. Wystan gave a small smile as he remembered how the parents were not impressed by the actions by the foal.

As his mind replayed his most recent case, Wystan slowly continued on his way along the moonlit path; ears alert for any sound over the sleeping woods. Hours passed as he walked the path, the moon was high in the sky now, accomplishing the end of its arch in the sky and slowly beginning its descent. Farther up the path, the dense forest began to thin as the soquili reached the read of the forest.

User ImageUnder the blanket of night, Eydis looked every inch like the otherworldly being that she is. The moon's light reflected off her white pelt, giving the mare an ethereal appearance that was only strengthened by the eerie glowing of her legs. She looked much like the lost spirits that humans spoke of in their tales of horror around a blazing fire.

Having emerged from the thick forest and into the open plains she avoided during the day, Eydis glanced back at the trees, and then to her long tail, which dragging on the ground from being of such a long length. Twigs, leaves, and dead weeds were snared with the ebony strands. An irritation that she was unable to avoid when walking through areas thick with vegetation. With ears perked to listen for the sounds of any one approaching, the mare leaned to carefully pull the ensnared objects from her tail.

She doubted anyone would emerge from the dark forest. For days now, she had been wandering these lands. Other Soq had been a rarity during her travels.

Before the Angeni an open plain lay as he walked silently out of the sleeping forest. The long grass of the plain was a pale in the bright moonlight. As his eyes scanned over his new surroundings, they stopped upon a shape that was in a distance. The moon was reflecting off the soquili’s pale coat, creating a dim beacon in the night.

Wystan paused, wondering if the soquili had noticed him yet; slowly he continued forward toward the pale coated soquili. Below him, the long grass tickled his legs as he made his way silently closer to the soquili.

The saying ‘Curiosity killed the cat’ wormed its way into his mind, which was soon replaced by the ending of the proverb, ‘but satisfaction brought it back’. It was a saying that many had told the grey bodied stallion as he asked them a constant stream of questions, and each time they quoted the proverb, he always replied with the ending remark. Wystan could not help but smile as his thoughts continued to work as he neared the pale figure.

At first, Eydis did not notice the approaching stallion, her focus solely lying on a stubborn twig that was ensnared within her ebony locks. When she finally pulled the twig free, she disdainfully spat it to the ground. It was as she lifted her head that she noticed the approaching stallion, the tall grass bending to his winged form.

Silently, the mare's dark eyes watched the stallion from behind her protective helm. Her wings, which emanated a dark aura, flexed behind her. Stretching in case this meeting should turn nasty. Curiosity and confidence held her in place as she waited to hear what this stallion would say, or to see if he would simply pass her by.

He was now close enough to see the mare in the soft glow of the moon. She wore a helm of sorts upon her head and her wings were translucent in the night. Dark ribbons wrapped around her pale bluish legs. She was a race of soquili that the detective had never met before; a new mystery stood valiantly in front of him.

“Hello miss, I was not expecting to see a soquili this late in the night. Are you from around here?” He gave her a friendly smile, hoping that he was showing her that he meant her no harm. Although by the way she carried herself and the helm she wore, Wystan guessed that she could protect herself well in a fight.

Such a friendly greeting was something the mare wasn't used to. In her homeland, you were more likely to get a mace in the face than a cheerful greeting and a friendly smile. Despite the greeting, Edyis remained on guard as she watched the stallion.

"No, I am not. I just recently arrived in this land." One of her ears flicked as she pondered the possibility that this meeting could provide her with information about this new land.

He waited, she did not seem to let down her guard, so he continued on with his friendly approach; his smile did not waver as he talked to the strangely clad mare that sparked his curiosity more than most. Wystan was just itching to ask her about the armor that she wore.

“Oh, well that is too bad. I was going to inquire if you knew…” Wystan let his sentence end; he quickly asked a question and hoped that the mare would answer the simple question, “Where did you arrive from? What land?”

Curiosity usually got the better of the detective.

Eydis could only determine that the customs of this land were very different from her own. First a friendly greeting, and now such a bold question. Inquiring about her homeland without even knowing her name yet.

The mare shook her head as her translucent wings flexed before once more settling on her back. She could not help the action as her attention was drawn to the four wings that he possessed. Can one fly with such wings?

"I can not give such information to a stranger." Her ears flicked as she turned attention back to the sentence that he'd let die. "If I knew what?"

Her response was understandable, except he did not understand why it was a big secret about the land where she came from. The Angeni decided that he would find out.

His wings gave a small twitch as a shrug, “I was going to ask you if you knew the legends or mysteries of this land, but since you are not from here… I was not going to ask you that pointless question.”

Peering out into the darkness, Wystan could only see shadows of creatures as they moved silently in the night, “May I inquire your name? I am called Wystan.” He looked back at the strange armor clad mare with the translucent wings, that were unlike anything he has ever seen before; he wished it was day light so he could get a better look.

The mention of mysteries and legends had the mare's ears perking out of intrigue. True, most tended to be silly stories told to feed the imagination of the young, but there were always the few that had a basis in truth. She would have to inquire about those legends, later.

"I am Eydis, Eydis Darkbane." Pride had the mare stepping back and stretching her wings to their full length, her slender form almost dwarfed by the dark wings. Wisps of dark aura wafting off the wings like smoke to ride up into the night.

As she stood their, she took the stallion's appearance in fully. Outside of the strange gauntlets he wore on his fore legs, he lacked the usual armor that marked a warrior.

The stallion bowed his head to the pale bodied mare, “It is a pleasure to make your acquaintance, Miss Eydis.” Wystan looked at his companion as she opened her wings wide, showing him the extent of her massive black wings; they were truly spectacular. The detective had never, in all this travels seen wings like those. ‘Do all her family have wings that spectacular? Or is it only her?’ He thought to himself and then decided he would not learn the answer unless he asked the mare.

“This may seem forward, but does all your family have those magnificent wings?”

Wystan did not move as the mare took in his appearance; he could feel her eyes gazing at him, even though they were hidden behind the helm she wore.

Again with the up front questions. It felt like she was talking with a child instead of a fully grown stallion. Still, if she gave him the answer to his inquiry, perhaps she could make an inquiry of my own.

"Not just my family, but my kind. These wings," flexes her dark wings for emphasis again, before folding them against her sides, "mark me as a Val'kyr."

She bowed her head, motioning at his own wings. "You possess four wings. Are they unique to you?"

The word was not familiar to the detective; it sounded foreign and something that came from the myths that he tried to solve, “I am not familiar with that kind. Who exactly are the Val’kyr?” Wystan stared at her wings, half hoping that the answer would pop into his head, perhaps his mother knew of the Val’kyr and had not gotten around to telling him and his brother the tale?

Wystan flicked his wings, and turned his head to look at the four wings attached to his back, “They are unique to my kin. All Angenis possess four wings upon their back.”

"The Val'ky are a powerful race," and that was all she felt like saying in regards to her kind. As far as she could tell, outside of her sister, there were no other Val'kyr in this land. Making the information irrelevant.

"Is it not difficult to fly with such wings?"

Wystan noticed that she did not want to elaborate on the origins of her race; he knew that in time he would discover what the Val’kyr were and how they were different from any tribe in the Land of the Soquili.

“Are there any more of your race here in these lands?” Wystan took a minute to consider her question, “Not at all, to me, it would seem that they make flying easier, since those with four wings upon their backs can soar higher than those who only have two.”

The detective looked at the mare’s two wings, “I would have to ask you the same question, is it not difficult to fly with wings that appear translucent?”
