User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show. Let me just start off by saying I do not have a facebook. or a myspace.
[[which is why im semi-ignorant regarding all this]]

I recently read an article in Newsweek regarding Facebook and the steps it allows one to take to protect one's privacy.
It increasingly mentioned facebook's failure to protect people and all that.
My question is: is facebook really to blame? if a person wants to be totally stupid and reveal every single aspect of him or herself, isn't it on them? :/
But like I said, I dont really know what's going on with that...site specifially. I dont know how hard it is to make everything 'private,' or whatever.

I had this creepy psychology teacher who wanted everyone to add her on facebook, and some of my friends said she would look at all their stuff and talk to them on the IM thing. they were freaked out by how stalker-ish she was and all i could do was laugh. I wouldnt have added that moron.

Second question: Aside from the privacy thing, do you even like facebook? Pros and cons?
and dont say, "it helps me keep in touch with whatever," cuz I know for a fact that's not the ONLY reason you're on it. :/
I want you to defend (or refute) this thing!
SO, show me your convictions!!! D:<<

Cap'n D's got hardly any convictions now'days. Anyways.
I've got myself a fb, and I've got relatively strict privacy settings.

It's easy to hide stuff, if that's the way you want it. The problem, however, is that the default settings are REALLY loose.
Virtually everything is visible to everyone.
(I just checked it out two days ago)

I duno why I use it. I guess it's so I can keep up with people I don't see too often in person. Also, it's a good tool for stalking people, which I sometimes use to case whether a boy I like is gay 8D

I don't have an FB or MS either.
A bunch of people keep telling me to get one, which I won't, though it would be a useful tool for keepingin tough.
Like, how am I suppose to talk to my best friend who moved across state?
Also, I'm going to be in Japan for a semester, so how else would I be able to easily let people know what's going on, cos they don't always care about email.
Reguardless, facebook causes a lot of people to flunk out of HS or college.
Most of the people that one talks to on there are usually people they can talk to anytime, anyway.
email is safer, and everyone has a cell phone.
So I really kind of see facebook as useless and distracting.
Another reason I wouldn't want to get one is that there are games and stuff on there like something called "farmville" I think?
The second I joined, I'd probably get twenty punks asking me "COME JOIN MY FARMVILLE!"
If they don't take "no" for an answer with FB, why would they take "no" for an answer with "farmville?"
Also, many people are under the impression (for some reason) that it is phisically impossible to survive college without an FB.
I don't know why one would think that, but by doing what I do naturally (resisting current trends), I can pwn statistics. =D
Go me.

i've got both...
but i'm not sure why.

i don't ever talk to anybody on them,
so it's honestly pointless for me to have them,
but i guess i just like to have that sort
of communication available in case anyone
needs to talk to me but doesn't know my
number but has me on their friends list
or something.

privacy really isn't an issue for me.
i have everything set to 'friends only'.
and, that's that.
besides, it's not like i have my address
all over it and exactly what i'm doing.
in fact, i never post 'status updates'-
i just go on, look over what everyone's
doing as a means of staying aware of real
life in my town, and then curse at the sheer
uneventfulness of owning an account on those sites.

with myspace, i like tweaking my profile.
and sometimes i'll add music to my playlist.
other'n that...
i don't know, it's kind of boring.

it's not a big deal- if someone doesn't have a facebook,
whatever.
if someone has a facebook,
i'm not going to judge them and say,
'hahahaha you couldn't get through life without a facebook!'

it's just not a big deal.

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show. Now I'm wondering what makes this stuff popular.
Like, who decrees what the crowd follows? :/

yeah, i don't care really. But If one more p***k demands I get a facebook, I am going to crush their face
with some ******** Rand.
Aptly named, that site.

nobody decrees it;
somebody finds a new site,
that-
oh look!
it's got music, photos, communication...
let's make an account.
and let's tell all my friends to make accounts
so that i can email them via the site.
and their friends tell other friends,
etc. etc.

it's just convinent to have an account on a social networking site like that, if you want to meet new people and contact your buddies.

and okay,
well people are probably telling you to get an account there
so that they can email you on a site where the rest of their
friends are on. they're probably only telling you to do that
so they can talk to you...

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.I still don't see it.
but i am not easily swayed :/
my friends had to tie me down and force me on gaia back in the day >.>;;

Yeah, but if we rarely talk irl, what makes a person think they can chat me up on the interwebs?
it doesn't work that way.

and you're right. i shouldn't be so disgusted offended.

awww now i feel badly. v.v
I'm just suspicious by nature I suppose.

So I have a fb, but I hate it and wish I had never been pressured into getting it my freshman year of high school when everyone else was getting it and it was still relatively new. It is the biggest distraction in my life, hands down. you can spend hours "creeping'" on people when instead you could creep on people in real life and actually talk to them. oo, now that's a concept. I am afraid to death of putting things on fb (but I do anyway). I have my privacy settings to friends only, but I'm still scared. The only real thing I use it for is to contact people in the clubs I'm in, for which it is useful; except that no one really responds so I don't know how to take it -.-. Sometimes when we have big projects due, and we've all procrastinated, it's comforting to see everyone on fb discussing things and freaking out. it's also really useful to ask for homework if you don't have phone numbers of people (like if you aren't close friends with anyone in your classes, fb makes asking less awkward as well). I always applaud the people who don't get facebook.

I had a myspace for about ten minutes literally before I deleted it once I figured out there's literally nothing to do on the site. I think only musicians end up using it to promote themselves, which is good for them.

Twitter is even dumber from what I can tell; I've heard it described as fb without the parts of facebook that make it interesting. And considering it is essentially constant status updates, whoever uses it who's not a celebrity is an egotist and that's that.

I has a f**... I mean... a facebook...

Well, I mean, I waited until I was like dun with high school and stuff before I got one. I actually use mine though, because I move around a lot and in my line of work you meet a lot of different people from everywhere, especially when you are in training. And Moo likes to stay in contact with his peeps.

But I like know all of my friends though.

The only things I hate about it is when people post dumbass status', which I just go *avert your eyes!*, and when girls take pictures of themselves in tight shirts with their cellulars in the mirrors, and stupid fb games. Like Farmville. Case and point.

I also don't feel the need to protect my information. You can find like, every. freaking. detail. of my life on fb, just because I know no one will look into it. And if they do, they really can't touch me.
