Well, In the times today the economy is tough, we all know that. Some people are better off than others and can afford to buy their tools and objects, but some of the less fortunate cannot use tools simply because they cannot afford them.
Yet there are those innovative individuals who create their own tools and pieces to their altar and such.
So I'm here to ask you about your self-made tools and altar pieces, and other miscellaneous things in your pagan lives.
P.S. It would also be appreciated if you inventive individuals could give tips on how to create a good sturdy staff. I need a new one. Thanks!

I agree that sometimes people make their tools because they can't afford them, but you also have to take into account the consecration process; that is, some items shouldn't be bought from the store. I understand buying an consecrating, for example, an athame, because many people don't know how to make a knife. However, it strikes me as almost silly to buy a wand. That should be charged with one's own personal energy, not sullied by some corporation's uncaring manufacturing.

its true that some things you cant make yurself. athames and bollines(a knife for cutting herbs whereas the athame is for directing energy) and lighters and matches which most of us cant make. those things have to be bought. things like staves, wands, even ritual clothing you can make yourself. but there is also a happy medium. my wand was handcrafted from cocobolo wood. i bought it. but let's say you did get it from a manufacturer. well even when you make something you have to get the materials from somewhere and those materials will need to be energetically cleansed. its the same with other tools. it truly depends on you. for now i have a wand made by someone else. but my own Deity has guided me to make my own soon. i'll use both of them depending on the purpose. so dont jump to the conclusion that bought tools are inferior, because remember the tool has no power. only you do.

Then again, if you already spent every cent you had on your tools already, there's no need to get thrifty. :3
Although there are usually sales on candles and incense wherever you go--most times those things are pretty affordable for two or three uses. I know I use a whole incense stick in one sitting, but sometimes I cut it short at half point because of the other residents not being able to handle the smell.

I wish I was talented enough to make anything. My friend made a lovely broom, for the "sweeping" away of negative and such. I am not sure where she got the idea for it, but she makes a new one every year. All that is is a stick with twigs tied to the end and the she wraps ribbons and such around it. Personally, I really want to make a staff but I'm still waiting for the right piece of wood.

It would depend on the tool, some tools you really shouldn't buy. For instance, place the magic on a dream catcher AS you're making it instead of using a store bought one. Big difference.

Personally, I really want to make a staff but I'm still waiting for the right piece of wood. A besom is actually very popular nowadays, even for non-witches. I have known some Christians to use them. You use it when you are feeling in a negative mood, or when negative things surround you. You sweep it away, and then at the end of the year, you throw it, and the lingering negative energy "stuck" to it. (like how hair and lint get stuck to a regular broom) I have personally made wands before. It can be a lot of fun, and really isn't all that difficult. You could make your own chalice too, that's simple. If you have access to a kiln, then you could make it from clay, though there are some kinds I believe that can be done in the oven. Then only thing is, if you make a clay chalice from Polymer clay DO NOT DRINK FROM IT. Polymer clay can "leak" a chemical into your drink and cause you to become extremely ill.

Even some chalices you can buy you shouldn't drink from. I just use a regular glass for such things.

I have a nice little silver goblet. It's plain, and worn and dented, but I like it, and it's safe to drink from. Found it at goodwill XD Love that store.

I personally plan to make a wand very soon. A friend of my father's does a lot of woodworking, and he has a lathe, so I've asked him to see if he can get a block of ash or willow for me to use, and I'll go spin it out myself. 3nodding

The Mormon churche's Desert Industries is one of the best places to go for witchcraft supplies if you know what you're looking for. You'll find cool decorational candle holders real cheap. You'll find larger candles, that since they want to get rid of to make room for more stuff. They'll sell for a buck or two. That's it.
Also, pretty much anything that could add proper symbolism to a display. And have the proper intent and meaning. Could work as an addition to your home for said magical purposes if you put your own energy on the object right.
And as far as the store itself goes? They don't care what you're using it for. Well, they might since Christianity has varying opinions on witches since we're all weird and scary since we like to believe in different things.
But, it's not like they're going to ask if the candle you just bought is going to be used for witchcraft or anything. They don't need to know. and you get a killer deal on basic supplies.
Score.
