I thought it might be a good idea to throw some ideas around. My first one is very uninspired and almost a complete rip off of Midge's idea but I have only worked with dragons once and it was not in completely positive light since I was going for modern times using a European filter. Meh, the excitement I can feel from here. Feel Free to add your version(s) or ideas. If we get enough we can poll vote it.
Great wars have torn the idealistic future and have set back civilization. The world now resembles a mix between the future and the simple movements of the past. Part of this oddity is also due in part to a shift between science and magic. Creatures of magic have long ago been considered the stuff of children's dreams and bedtime story. Now mages, and ancient creatures have started to appear. Some hide their nature in order to live among humans in peace. Others find hiding a cowardly. Day by day tensions rise. Rumors have it that dragons exists in woods and mountains and even Heaven itself is preparing for the end of days as reports of angel sights have increased since a statue of a virgin mother wept blood and cried to the Light for the past crimes of mankind. People in large cities and small villages alike wait and watch for the next chapter of history to be written, to see where they is be.

Besides you have such an extensive imagination you should have tons to offer. Especially to such a weak story as the one I presented. Being perfectly honest, this is my first time and don't have a clue what I'm doing.
