Today would be the day. It would be the day that Jade Storm would find that grumpy old buck and show him what's what; she could feel it in her bones.
She stood in a pond, brushing her coat completely clean with her muzzle and occasionally her tail, until her white fur was whiter than she could ever remember it being. She had no idea why she wanted to prove herself to the grump, but she did. If she had paused to take a moment to think about how absolutely ridiculous this endeavour was, perhaps she wouldn't be there, making herself as pretty as she could.
It was the strangest thing- Jade Storm was usually so quiet and reserved, complaint and yielding. Something about this buck riled her up and made her want to silence him.
Today would be that day, she was sure.

 Today would be the day.
It would be the day that Mallowstar finally got a peaceful afternoon nap by the pond. It was the perfect temperature, the birds were quiet and Petalhunter was up in the tree line looking for food.
Mallowstar let out a good yawn as he walked forward towards the lake, found a good tree and laid down on the ground. With a squee, Petalhunter scurried down the tree and pounce onto Mallowstar's head.
Mallowstar made a loud grump of a sound and shook his head, causing Petalhunter to take up a spot on Mallowstar's back instead. Mallowstar looked up to the air, swayed his tail across the surface of the pond for a moment and then laid his head back and closed his eyes. Peace and quiet, not a soul around to disturb him.
Today would be that day. That day he got the perfect afternoon nap. He was sure.

A smile plastered across her muzzle, Jade Storm gracefully drifted out of the little pond. It was easy enough, though the bottoms of her hooves were dirty now, the rest of her body was rather perfectly clean.
She shook herself off- similar to a wolf violently shaking the water off of its fur- and then carefully used her tail to pat down the patches of fuzzy fur that wanted to stick up after being shaken off.
"Where...?" she began, practically tip-toeing over the ground, worrying until her fur dried. She wandered for some time, her head peering this way and that.
Why today? Why, today of all days, did she remember and want to tell that strange, pink buck off? He had probably already forgotten all about her. And if not, well, he probably wouldn't recognize her now, not as clean and neat as she had made herself.
The swamp was so big and she had so many Kimeti residing each and everywhere imaginable... What were the chances of running into that same, grumpy buck with the little mongoose that tugged on her ears?
Or at least that's what she would have thought if, miraculously enough, she hadn't wandered by that exact grumpy, pink buck with the little mongoose that tugged on her ears.
His eyes were closed.
A smirk danced across Jade Storm's face.
Carefully she trotted over towards him, her fur was completely dry by this point, so the light steps were an attempt to not wake him up.
She stood there a small step before him, breathing quietly, evenly, so as not to disturb him.
She stood there and wondered aloud, "Well, now what?"

Mallowstar ignored the sound of another creature approaching in his senses, refusing to open his eyes and ruin his nap. It would take a lot more than that to get him up! He would be bitten by a crocodile before he got up today! Petalhunter began bouncing on Mallowstar's back though, and making squeaks and squeals of a noise as he ran up onto Mallowstar's head again. The mongoose tried to pull open the buck's eyelids without success. Petalhunter tugged on the buck's ears, and horns and even his cheeks - the buck refused to move or even open his eyes. Finally, the mongoose hopped off the buck's head and on the ground.
Relieved.
The buck relaxed into a soft slumber as Petalhunter scurried around the approaching doe. Petalhunter wanted to play with her ears again! Mallowstar wanted to never see the crazy woman again. Life really is cruel when the doe spoke and that ringing noise of her voice caused him to open his eyes with a very, very unhappy expression.
Was it that he was awoken? Or that she was here? It could be either. It could be both. It could even be because the sun was shining through the canopy. He groaned.
"You leave."
He gave her a quick glance over, looming over her hooves.
"Your feet are filthy." He exaggerated, but he did that with everything.

She chose to ignore his first statement.
"And the rest of me?" she asked softly, something in her voice unintentionally asking for praise. "You've no manners, old buck." she quickly tacked on to her question.
Jade Storm's ears pressed back against her head, her tail swishing left to right in time to her heartbeat. Her eyes followed the mongoose, wanting to play with it but not sure she wanted its dirt-covered little paws on her very white fur.

The buck had to wonder how she got off saying he had no manners when she was the one coming over here and waking him up! He couldn't believe it. His perfect day, ruined by this doe, again! He looked her over and groaned.
"Clean enough, but I am sure somewhere else is just as filthy as your feet."
He flicked his tail against the ground.
"Petalhunter," he said. "Stop fraternizing with the enemy."

A smirk threatened to surface when the old buck groaned. She had actually not really listened to anything he had said at all except one word. She was intently focused on the mongoose he called Petalhunter.
And so, "Petalhunter?" she questioned, her head dipping down towards it, deciding she didn't care if the little thing dirtied her.
Her eyes rolled up towards the buck, a curious expression dancing behind them, "And what are you called, old buck?"

The little mongoose quickly hopped up onto the familiar doe, succeeding in putting little brown paw prints over her coat, satisfying Mallowstar for his rude awakening. The mongoose squeaked at the doe, and ran back and forth over her back like she was a tree branch until finally climbing up top her head and settling between her ears again, paws on one of them, pushing it back and forth.
Mallowstar looked at the doe unhappily.
"I do believe it is proper to introduce yourself before asking another's name," he paused. "Especially after so rudely awakening them."

The gentle smile caused by the absolutely adorable mongoose softened her expression, so when she turned back towards the buck, Jade Storm wasn't nearly as defiant as she had been before Petalhunter climbed onto her. She knew she was covered in little pawprints but didn't seem to care anymore.
"Fine then." she nodded, giving the little mongoose a bounce, "I'm called Jade Storm." she walked carefully towards her company, her ear twitching in response to the mongoose playing with it.
"You shouldn't look so unhappy." she grinned, "Old Buck."

The mongoose squealed happily, getting attention it didn't normally receive. It would get to ride on it's owner and even sleep on it's owner but he was often grumpy and barely tolerated any sort of affection. Petalhunter didn't mind though, contrary to popular belief, Mallowstar did take very good care of it.
Mallowstar looked at the doe, and Petalhunter, giving up removing it from it's fraternizing.
"Well," she said, clearing his throat, "Jade Storm."
He looked at her coat, and grinned.
"I wouldn't be so unhappy if you didn't insist on waking me up every time we do so meet--and in such an appearance."
He was obviously referencing her now dirty coat, ignoring the fact it was clean and taking advantage of it.

A small giggle rolled from Jade Storm's throat in response to Petalhunter's squeal. It was terribly cute, she decided. Maybe one day she could have one of her own, for now she supposed she'd make due with occasionally bumping into and playing with this one when she could.
Twitching her ears against the mongoose occasionally, she cracked a shy grin, suddenly feeling more like her usual self. A nervous noise leaked from her muzzle and her eyes fell for half a heartbeat before returning to the buck.
"So, Old buck, you're saying if I... Came to you while you were awake and with a clean coat you'd be happy to see me?" she paused to emphasize her words before continuing, "I suppose I'd have to stick around to know when you are awake and when you are asleep, then. And to ignore Petalhunter so the little mongoose doesn't get my coat dirty with pawprints?"

The buck was only half heartedly listening to the doe, eying the little traitor playing with her instead. When she asked him if she came to him with a clean coat while he was awake, would he be happy to see him he automatically replied without thinking about it.
"Yes," he said.
And then he froze.
What?

Jade Storm's entire body became stiff at his response. She stood there simply blinking for some time before her mind came back to her and she was able to formulate words once more. Oh no, she was not expecting that; she hadn't even thought he had been listening to her.
"What?"
From the look on the older Kimeti, she was sure she was simply echoing his thoughts.

Automatically the cranky pink buck growled. Apparently not towards her though as he looked at the sky. Damn it was hot today! He finally turned his face from the sky and Petalhunter to the doe. He looked at her for a long moment. Aw, look how dirty she was. What a good job Petalhunter did giving him reasons to tell her to leave.
"I was talking about you ignoring my companion." He covered cleverly.

She seemed to consider his words carefully before shrugging as well as a Kimeti could.
"Perhaps you should keep better control of it." she cracked, a half smile playing across her features. Despite her words, her ears seemed to flatten against her head; for some reason she found herself disappointed.
She wasn't in the mood for teasing, anymore.
"I suppose I should let you have your sleep?" she questioned, lowering her head to allow the mongoose to jump off, should it desire.
