Rebirth settled softly against the mangrove tree. Through the dappled sunlight, glimpses of her bright fur shone against the green and brown surroundings. Firebird dived and swooped about her, singing as playfully as ever. The doe smiled at her songbird, entranced by its melody and her tail twitched anxiously. She rolled onto her back and kicked up her legs. She reached as far as she could towards the sky. How lovely it must be to fly. She pulled her legs in, tucking them against her body and let gravity force her to her side. With her dark hair spread out on the floor, she continued to watch her bird's performance.
Crooning at first, she hummed a melody before words began to form.
"Falling freely from their chains Each flies swiftly like the cranes Majestic beauty in their wake A freckled night these cranes do make.
They glow like fireflies in the night Each is twinkling their own light An yet what is this lovely star we can only love them from afar..
The moon still gives the brightest shine Someday I'll make that moon mine I'll give her to my one true love The very stars that shine above..."
she hesitated, blinked. What came next? What came next...

Twilight Chaser and Twilight Dancer were together as usual. It was hard for the soul to part and go to separate ways. Chaser would brush up against Dancer as they walked together, a comforting warmth and familiarity washing over them. Their walk was disrupted though as their ears picked up the sound of singing. Their bodies swayed together, and moved quietly towards the sound.
Upon reaching the peek of the sound, they found a beautiful, no, radiant doe on her back on the ground. Very appetizing. Standing not too far behind her, they grinned to each other and then Dancer spoke softly,
"But what if the moon is theirs Born from her silky, long hairs"
And without pause, Chaser continued,
"Without a gift in hand to present I pray to the moon will not resent."

Rebirth craned her neck to see who now joined her. Not one, but two kimeti? They matched so magnificently, their pearly coats dashed with a lovely violet streak. Four horns as well, she noted, gazing at their beauty. She listened to their voices, taking it all in. Were those the words she sought? She could not tell, though they seemed to fit. Smiling, she rolled onto her hooves and stood.
Cocking her head, she advanced. "Do you know this song?" she asked, her eyes panning from one to the other. She thought she was the only one who knew it, not having met another who did. Yet the words seemed to mesh into the song, undoubtedly they knew it. How could she forget those words..

The two twins grinned as they got a better look of the doe's face. Beautiful black waves against a deep maroon and red, flashes of gold and orange. Absolutely stunning. Certainly delicious. Quite so. A smiling beauty, standing up to greet them. Their eyes seemed to sparkle as she advanced. The two stood tall and only one answered: Chaser.
"Oh yes, very well."
The two looked at each other and this time Dancer spoke.
"So well you could call it family."

Rebirth stared blankly ahead at them. "Family?" she repeated. How could a song be considered family? She pondered this, remembering that she knew the song since childhood. It's been with her ever since. Perhaps it could be somewhat of a family member? But the way the twins looked to another. Perhaps they were referring to each other? The song was indeed of the night sky, beautiful as it ever was. And the two twins were beautiful as well. Their coats like the stars hidden behind white clouds. The way they seemed to sparkle reminded her of herself and she felt warm.
"I don't believe we've met before..my name is Rebirth, and this.." she said, looking to her songbird, "is Firebird, my life-long companion. At the sound of her name, Firebird alighted upon Rebirth's shoulder, warbling a lively tune for the twins. It was a short melody, and as it ended, she flew erratically, playfully, and landed upon one of Chaser's four horns.
"Might I have the honor of knowing your names?" she asked, delighted that Firebird seemed to like them.

"Family."
The two were listening, watching the doe like she was prey and then a bird landed on Chaser's head. Chaser didn't flinch at all and continued to look at Rebirth -- however, Dancer flinched head head and appeared to be trying to shake the bird off. Nothing. It took a moment. Oh. It was a bird. Dancer calmed down, looking carefully at the bird on the horn. It reminded her of the doe in front of them, but only slightly.
"A pleasure," Chaser said.
"To meet you." Dancer said.
"The name is Twilight."
"This side is the Chaser," Dancer pointed to with her hoof.
"This side is the Dancer," Chaser pointed his nose to, bird still on his horn.

Rebirth didn't notice the way they looked at her, almost hungrily. Instead, her eyes flickered between them. Their gaze was hypnotizing, and she couldn't focus on anything but them. She giggled when Dancer shook her head, as the bird was on Chaser's head.
How lovely it must be to be twins, she thought. She wondered if she were to bear twins, smaller versions of herself. Would they be linked as these were? Would they be bonded for life, never to leave one another's side? She smiled at the thought. She didn't like feeling bound, forced to be with someone. But to be with herself was different. A twin would be like the other half of the soul.
"Have you two always been so close?" she asked, curious on the concept of twins. She imagined a buck that looked just like her and smiled. Perfection in a reflection. She forced her attention to the twins again. Twilight Chaser was the male, Twilight Dancer the female. Her head bobbed back and forth, mentally memorizing their names.

The two did not know why the doe giggled, but it was not unpleasant to hear. The two looked at each other, and then back at the doe, and then Dancer up at the bird on Chaser's horn.
"Always," even in their dreams, they were together. It was meant to be for sure. From their dreams to their time crawling out of their sac, to living alone without mother or father, they only had each other. It was enough for them. They did not need to know of their mother, or their father, as long as they remembered themselves. They were close, like one soul in two bodies. They would probably only ever themselves, but a pretty doe or buck was always pleasant company.
"Do you,"
"Have family?"

Such an intriguing pair! To always finish one another's sentences, it was like a game to see who said what words, what came next, who's turn was it to speak. She listened and stayed silent for a moment. Family? She searched her mind, looking inwards past memories and long forgotten dreams. Nothing of family came up.
Frowning, she replied, "I don't believe I do. As far as I can remember I have never met a relative. It makes me wonder if I have a mother or father out there in the swamp. Do they look like me? Do I have siblings? I'd love to find out, but I just don't know how. Firebird has been the only family i've ever had. She has always been by my side, as you two have been at each other's. But I long for a true family. For children. To watch them grow as I did once. To see them live their lives. Will they make the same choices as I did? Or branch off on their own.."
Her voice trailed off in thought, fantasizing about a giant family. Would her traits fade with time as her heritage grew? Would her great-grandchildren return to her? Would her children even return to her? As she could never find her own parents...
Her eyes fell as she imagined a doe and buck, waiting for their daughter to come home.

"Do not be sad, new friend, you fit in well with the sky."
They of course referred to themselves, they were a sky. She fit well with them, they'd have a lovely good stroll together should the swamp be willing. Chaser lowered his head to the doe, allowing her to see Firebird on his horn once more. He had a grin on his face, and Dancer watched her for him. Then she grinned.
"You can join us if you want."
They could make a family. A pretty doe was always welcome on their stroll. They would have a wonderful time, would the swamp be willing.

Rebirth's heart felt lighter. She looked up at the darkening sky, now matching her colors more and more. Perhaps she did fit in. Perhaps.
Firebird sang joyously, mirroring her owner's emotion. Both were distracted, and neither noticed the hungry grins on the twins' faces.
As Rebirth gazed at the sky, she listened to their proposition and immediately looked back to them. "Join you?" she said elatedly. It was a marvelous idea. She could finally have a family. Kimeti to love and be loved by, right? She moved closer to them, feeling closer inside, until they were mere inches away.

The two kimeti nodded. They would be her family. They would make a family.
"Yes, join us."
There was no more question. The moment she stepped closer, it was too late. They didn't speak anymore words after that. Dancer laid her head against the doe, nuzzling her muzzle into the doe's raven hair while Chaser stood in front of her, stealing her glances, his glowing eyes staring down into hers until he too stepped forward, slowly but surely, keeping her eyes as he did so.
