The mud of the forest floor, with a layer of old leaves and other detritus leftover from the recent rainfall, muted the sounds of someone stomping down the well-worn path. If the lone traveler had been on a true road, paved in stone, the hoofbeats would have run with a precision familiar to anyone who'd ever worked with cavalry.

If anyone could have heard that cadence from the Soquili now moving through the forest, they would have been shocked to realize she was so small. After all, Usdia were not at all big enough for military purposes.

The grey mare was perfectly aware of all of these facts. Asked if she cared, she would have responded with an obscenity. After all, she was a creature of the military. Whether they liked it or not.

However much she might like to ignore the facts though, the armed forces were her past and her present was a dank forest in a land she was still getting the lay of after almost two years. She wasn't lost, not completely. She had a general idea of where she was. Ask her for specifics though...

...and she'd probably still respond with profanity. Because the full-size stallions didn't respond to anything else very well.

She was shaken from her reverie by a rustling patter above her. The mare paused to glance upwards and got a raindrop in her eye for her troubles. Muttering under her breath at the return of the rain, she glared around, looking for someplace to shelter until it stopped.

User ImagePeeking out of her hidden hole in a hill, an usdia mare searched the area for any danger that might be lurking outside her home, waiting for her to come out. Seeing that there was nobody outside with her quick scan, the mare exited her home, and after a couple steps away from her home, she double checked to see if there was any danger about. The usdia mare still lived in fear and nervousness that originated from a young age, and only got a little better since then. She was less likely to faint at the sight of something that made her scared, and was more willing to converse with others. She definitely did not overcome her stuttering problem, but it was only bad when she was nervous.

After the mare decided that there was no danger about, she walked further out away from her home. She quickly noticed how her hooves would make a squishing noise from the mud. She paid no mind to it, continuing on her way. She needed to stretch out her legs, especially after being cramped up in her cave for so long in solitude. She took a deep inhale of the air around her, enjoying the fresh woodsy scent that was brought out by the fresh rain. It was much better than the moist, damp smell of her hole.

It was not too far in her walk that it started to rain. She looked surprised, but did not mind the rain so much. The cool rain cooled her skin, gradually getting her soaked as she continued on her walk. Her mane and tail was fully soaked, dripping water as she progressed on her way. She didn't pay too much to her surroundings, especially in passing of other Soquili.

Was there nowhere in this godsforsaken forest that was sheltered against the oppressive rain? It was everywhere, and it was turning the dirt beneath her hooves into mud, sure to stain her grey hide until she could find a clean stream or pond. Tired of the sucking sound accompanying her every step, Blade finally stopped and took inventory of her surroundings.

Trees. Rain. The sucking sound accompanying her every step-

But she'd stopped. Blue eyes kindling with excitement, the grey usdia followed the sounds of someone else moving through the forest, pausing frequently to make sure she was going the right direction and not being deceived by the sounds of her own movement.

Finally, despite the rain, she found her quarry. It was another usdia mare! Blade couldn't stop the surprised swear before it escaped her mouth.

"Holy s**t!"

The usdia enjoyed her little walk, finding it a bit relaxing. Her eyes closed, listening to the soothing noise of rain falling on leaves, the ground, and everything else within reach.

It wasn't until she heard a loud exclamation that her eyes flew open in surprise. Her body tensed up in fear, forgetting about the fact that there might be something dangerous out and could devour her in one bite. She tensed up so much that she was starting to shrink into herself by pulling herself into almost a ball, like a turtle retreating into her shell.

The mare couldn't pull herself to turn around and face the thing that exclaimed those words and stuttered out a meek, "D-don't hurt me!"

Blade had never seen someone react with such fear as the stranger mare showed. Her surprise triumphed over her wish to appear tough and in charge of any situation and she cocked her head at the other.

"Now why would I do a silly thing like that?"

She had no reason to hurt an usdia - most (excluding herself of course) were perfectly harmless and fairly gentle. She took a careful step forward.

"Are you okay?"

Pocket Lint swiveled her ears so that they were facing the potential predator, her ears nearly fighting to stay up and be alert and flicked back against her head to protect her ears. "P-pocket d-d-don't know. T-things just ha-happens sometimes."

Her body was tense, hearing the other creature coming up from behind her. She tried to relax. The other creature was worried for her well-being. She had to be good, right?

Slowly, the mare turned her head to gaze at the creature behind her. She was quite surprised to see another mare. An usdia mare to boot! The only other usdia mare she knew of was her own mother, and sister... and her sister's daughter, but that was inside the family! "P-pocket doesn't know. W-will she be okay?" The mare looked timidly to the other mare.

Blade was brought up short by the stranger's odd behavior. She was accustomed to putting the fear of gods into people, but she wasn't even trying and the other mare was reduced to a wobbling mess of jelly. And really, who spoke in the third person? She exerted her will to the utmost trying to keep the scorn off of her face as she tried to figure out what the other was actually saying.

Blade closed her eyes and took a breath. She didn't want to terrify the other and if she didn't calm down she'd do just that.

"What doesn't Pocket know?" the grey usdia asked as gently as she could, lips clamping shut once she got the last word out in a reasonably calm voice.

Princess Pocket Lint nervously flitted her gaze to the other mare to the ground, and back. She could only observe and try to gauge the stranger's feelings. From what she could sense was that the other mare was upset... maybe? It didn't help her feel any better. She hope that was not true. This would be a first, if her own kind tried attacking her.

"P-Pocket doesn't k-know..." She said slowly, trying to keep her calm and remember to breathe, but while she trying calming down, she was well aware that she had to make the other mare wait for her answer. Scrounging her brain for her answer, the mare just looked blank for a moment before replying, "If... you w-would hurt P-pocket?"

Blade kept her lips clamped shut as the other mare stuttered out her answer. Then she continued to stay silent as she worked out just what Pocket was saying. Finally she let out a long slow breath and spoke slowly and carefully. And if there was a bit of an edge to her voice, well, she wasn't shouting at the pathetic creature, was she now.

"I suppose...Pocket wouldn't know. But I won't. I've got no reason to," the grey mare told the stranger. She was trying very hard to not lose her temper - this was reasonably difficult, since it wasn't something she usually worked towards.

"What is Pocket doing, walking alone in the wet forest?" Ye gods, she was even talking like the other mare. Well, at least she wasn't talking in third person. Yet.

Princess Pocket Lint took a good look at the other mare and observed her reactions to her. She did not visibly look upset, or angry. Was that enough indication? Could she really trust the other mare to not hurt her? Her own ears were tilted back in her insecurities and paranoia that the other mare would attack her if she were to do something wrong to displease her.

Maybe she could believe her and trust her a little. It was the least she could do. Although, hearing the mare’s statement had her questioning it. Could she give the other mare a reason to hurt her? Of course she could… but what would that reason be? The mare was too frighten to even think about it lest she do it on accident and set the other mare off…

She had to ponder the next question. Her gaze fell on to the ground beneath her, trying to recall what she had been outside for prior to meeting this new mare. The wet ground, the smell of wood in the air, and the sound around her helped her recall. “P-pocket needed t-to str-retch her legs…” She said quietly, drawing her gaze back up to the other mare. “Too c-cramped in her c-cave..”

"I...see." The words came out stiffly, clipped. Good gods, this mare was...was pathetic! It was difficult for the grey usdia to keep her scorn from showing, but she knew it would just terrify the kid again. Well, the other mare could be any age, really, including older than Blade, but she was still a child in her actions.

The silence stretched on into awkwardness.

"You know," Blade ventured hesitantly, almost gently, "you might try to find a two-legger. A kind one, who can look after you and protect you." There were good and bad two-leggers in this world, she knew, but perhaps if the right one could be found, maybe Pocket could be coaxed out of her fearfulness.

Gods all knew Blade didn't have the time or patience for it.
