Gaia has some very conflicting messages about what nud ity is allowed. There are a number of items to simulate being nak ed and Gaia has named their official softball team coincidentally stare after barely legal porn. There have been a number of Gaia sponsored and endorsed 'nu de' events

This is taken from the picture post thread in the Art forum:
The Admin
Picture Post Rules and Guidelines
Guidelines for Image Posting....

  • Artistic photography is allowed, casual snapshots are not.
    ....
  • Artistic nudity is allowed in Picture Post.
However, if you would like to post such art please include a nudity warning in the topic title and make sure to give a link to the image rather than embedding it in your post. Failure to include a warning or posting the image directly can result in a warning for inappropriate content.
Images that contain graphic sexual content are not appropriate for posting at all.....

But what determines "artistic nudity"? My sister did an entire gallery show of drawings of her nether regions, and it was quite artistic but it was also nothing but her crotch. If she was on Gaia, could she post her nu de art?
We cannot even discuss the writings of Philip K. D ick, who is a wonderful and very influential writer

In your opinion, just what is PG13 appropriate?
What do you think of Gaia's restrictions and examples?

I'm fine with nudity around children if its tasteful (ex: the birth of venus) but if we're talking about hardcore nudity then no. It should be left for adults.

I don't have a problem with nudity and don't see nudity as necessarily even sexual at all but these PG 13 guidlines are kind of vauge and nonsensical.
What is there definition of "artistic" and who decides this?
Can we use a guidline of good taste in a global community where many diverse cultures have differing views on what's acceptable?

There's a scene in My Neighbor Totoro, the Miazaki classic family anime, where the dad is bathing with his two daughters. Nothing sexual or inappropirate, just a normal daily family moment, but it would be unthinkable in an American cartoon.

What about a coffee table book of book on the Suicide Girls? I found a one that had no explicit sexual content, just a beautifully composed photographs of women who were pierced, tatooed and naked. I wouldn't think that's innapropriate, but I can see how others might not see it that way.

Or for an inflammatory example: Charles Dodgeson (aka Lewis Carrol)'s silver gelatin print photographs of children. Nude children. Not an uncommon artfull expression of the Victorian era but in modern debates people aren't sure whether or not to call it kiddie skin pics or just another part or the Victorian era people prefer to pretend never happened.

The PG13 guidline and censoring on Gaia makes it impossible to use even the proper medical terminology for ones own body, let alone have discussions about art, philosophy, anthropology, or even safe sex but doesn't limit coarse sexual discourse at all. If anything it makes it more crude to talk about it.

You bring up many good points. I love all 3 of your examples (their things I like). I've often thought the same thing about that scene in My Neighbor Totoro.

The thing is everyone has a different idea of what should be censored and what's "ok". Also many people are prudes; they think the word v****a is dirty and should not be used. It’s hard to tell the difference between people who legitimately bring up a good point about what is not ok, and the people who are just cry babies and want everything to be repressed.

Have you seen this documentary called "This film is not yet rated"? It brings up many (disturbing) facts about the American film censoring system.

I'll have to check into that.

Right now I'm still working on what I find to be aproprieate. So I don't think I have much room to critizie until I understand myself.

I am agianst censership. It's unconstitutional.

That is a great documentary!
The ESRB video game system of rating is pretty screwed up too.

And speaking of vag*nas, I was not surprised at all that the Perfect Tragedy did not feature anything for the insightful and comedic theater and book hit Vag*na Monolgues.

Also it brings to mind an incident that happened a couple years ago. This man was telling a church room full of visitors and children about the Philipino he knows (I don't recall if the dialect was Illocano or Tagalog) and how ironic the districts Waikiki and Makiki are. Waikiki (tourist spots, nightclubs and bars) means no vag*nas and Makiki (a quiet residential neighborhood) mean lots of them. The host speaker was brain damaged and told this to every one a few times over the course of an hour or so and because he was brain damaged nobody wanted to tell him he was repeating himself. That would be rude, inappropriate and uncalled for. He was just so happy to be able to show off his knowledge of Philipino since there was a Philipino family there. Unfortunately some of the family didn't speak any english and just looked really confused why some guy kept talking about lots of "kiki" and no "kikis".
Yes. Gaia's beloved kitty mascot's name also means, um, 'kitty'

I've spent most of my life in multicultural areas usually surrounded with Asian cultures which have very different takes of what is acceptable.

The religion thing on Gaia is weird too. I doubt that many except radical extremist would sugest censoring the religious content but if you take a look at the items available there are a vast number of god, goddess and deity cosplay items for Shinto, Buddhist, Wiccan, Olympian, Egyptian, and several others belief systems but what items are there for cosplaying followers of the God of Abraham? Is there no demand for these items, would they be too offensive or are Christians, Muslims and Jews being overloode or excluded?
If there aren't items for thes because it's offensive to the God of Abraham faiths, then what does that say about all the Christians Muslims and Jews dressing up as Inari, nekomata, Sidhe and such?

I don't know that hard lines of 'acceptable' can ever really be drawn but vaguely sketching with invisible ink doesn't seems to cause more harm than good. It seems like we sacrifice too much sense and sense of self if we strive to hard to be inoffensive.
