This is a private role play between Yuudai [decision lobster] and Shin-mu [Beejoux].

Setting:

Main street. There are musicians performing! Who wouldn't stop to listen?
PostPosted: Thu Jun 03, 2010 6:33 pm

Perched on her brother's back despite the fact that she was fast approaching his own height, Koga Shizuka couldn't have been happier. Her arms were wound tightly around his shoulders, pressed down against his collar so as not to choke him while they walked, and in one fist, she held a brightly colored candy treat. It hadn't been all that difficult for her to convince her brother to carry her, mostly because there seemed to be some sort of performance going on and he didn't want her jostled, but she liked it all the same. No one gave piggybacks like Yuu, she said.

He thought it was cute that she loved them so much, but he was rapidly finding that she was getting much too big for them. His pride wouldn't allow him to admit it, but he was finding himself a little short of breath after hauling her about for the better part of an hour.

"Yuudai." Shifting, she pointed down the street, delight creeping into her voice. "There they are! Can we listen to them?"

Grateful for the excuse to put her down, Yuudai stepped aside, allowing the crowd to push along without them. Shizuka shimmied off his back, rearranging her garments and beaming at him as she did so.

"We have some time, so why not?" She slipped her hand into his, and they ventured closer, but were careful to avoid getting in the way of the regular traffic on Main Street.

Music filtered to them through the sounds of the regular crowd, a pleasant and upbeat song suited to the mood of the day. Before he knew it, he was tapping his foot, a smile curving his mouth as he began to recognize the time of the music. At his side, Shizuka worked studiously on her candy, swaying a bit from side to side.

After a few moments, she popped the sucker out of her mouth, looking over at Yuudai with a faint frown. "There's someone else listening to the music, but she's alone. We should go say hello to her."

Following his sister's gaze, Yuudai observed an elegant looking young woman apart from the rest of the crowd. It was obvious that she was listening to the music, though that alone likely would not have prompted Yuudai to approach her; the look on Shizuka's face, however, did. She was peering at him patiently, expectantly, and tugging at his hand.

"All right." Glancing from side to side, he began to lead his sister over, a faint smile on his face. He hoped the woman was friendly.

The music was the only company Shin needed, that's what she'd told herself anyways when she had left that morning. A few months back she probably would have been right, too. She had never before minded being on her own, bit now that she was attending the academy, forming bonds(however small and insignificant they may be), she found herself wondering if perhaps she'd enjoy herself more if she had company. Of course there was only a small handful of individuals she'd have been happy to spend time with. Miao, the young man with the pet bird, and of course Huang Fu.

Of course neither was present now. This new found attachment to others was something the dark lunarian was not used to dealing with. Or rather, her attachment to him. The indigo youth had been invading her thoughts and dreams, and she found herself wishing to be in his company, and cursing anyone else that may share it when she wasn't there. Jealousy, a new emotion.

Hopefully the day to herself, surrounded by the beauty of the day and the ambiance of music, she could clear her mind. She suspected not, but it was still a hope.

Off to the side, away from the crowd, she'd settled on a bench. Her hands were folded and her posture straight. Long legs crossed at the ankle. She may have been a social clutz, but she was every bit the noble young lady she was brought up to be.

The music was delightful. Light, melodic, and played by skilled hands. Close as she was, it was also somewhat load, and she didn't hear the approach of two sets of foot steps until they were very close. Turning her head to glance over her shoulder she caught sight of the young man and his little sister. Not realizing they were making their way to her side, she turned back to the musicians.

Not rude, but how was she to know they intended to join her?

It was easy enough to assume that they were not approaching her, so Yuudai didn't take offense when the woman glanced at them and looked away again. Instead, he simply leaned forward, knowing that his voice wouldn't be heard unless he spoke over the top of the music, and pulled his sister closer to his side.

"Hello. Do you mind if we share the bench?" At his side, Shizuka shifted her weight, then reached up and tucked some of her flyaway hair behind her ear.

Her smile was wider than her brother's, much friendlier. "We're enjoying the music, too, so... we can enjoy it together."

Chomping down on her lollipop, she dug in her brother's pocket, producing a handful of brightly wrapped candies. She offered these as a bargain, clearly hoping to buy her way into favor.

After a beat, he added, "We come bearing gifts, it seems."

She hid her surprise rather well, masking her subtle jump for simu turning on the bench to better address the two. So what if it had been a little rapid and she ended with a hand pressed to her heart and narrowed eyes quickly softening to something less hostile. She didn't like being startled, it was embarassing and even a little shameful. Unfortunately it was somethig that happened quite a lot. So often lost in thought or in deep concentration, it wasn't exactly a challenge to approach the noble unawares.

Her voice, when it came, may have started with a short note, but had taken on a far more approachable tone by the time she finished. "You startled me. I.. No, I don't mind." The young man alone she might have resisted, but the look the younger sister was turning up to her allowed for nothing short of yeilding to her will. Really, how was one supposed to refuse toffees and that charming smile? If either faction could harness that power, the long standing disagreement would end.

The young lady was awared a rare grin as she accepted the brightly wrapped candies, and she slipped a little further down the bench to allow them both plenty of room to sit. "Thank you very much."

Yuudai was met with a curious glance. Not unfriendly, only thoughtful. Small talk was not a skill of hers, so she didn't know what to say to him. The candies now on her lap provided excellent reason to keep ones mouth shut, and after unwrapping one, she popped it past glossed lips and twitched her gave back to the musicians. She did however remain at an angle that suggested she was open to conversation. Refolding her hands properly over her thighs and the treats that now rested there.

Shizuka hopped up to sit next to the woman, very pleased with herself for negotiating the situation so favorably. A moment later Yuudai lowered himself to the bench as well, crossing one leg over the top of the other in his habitual sitting pose. While it was true that he had things to do later in the day, there was no harm in taking a few moments to just enjoy the morning. He might have insisted they move along if he had been with anyone else, but it was a well known fact around the family that Shizuka was his particular favorite. He simply found it difficult to say no to her when she actually asked him for something.

The woman's posture wasn't exactly inviting, but she didn't seem to be discouraging conversation, either. Shizuka looked between them, sucking thoughtfully on her lollipop, and tugged on her brother's hand again.

"I am Koga Yuudai," he said, reaching up to pass a hand down his sister's hair. "And this is my little sister, Shizuka."

"It's nice to meet you," she said chirpily, wiggling a little on the bench. "You have really pretty hair. Doesn't she, Yuu?"

He had just been admiring her hair moments before, and so he chuckled, much more at ease than he normally would have been in such a situation. "Yes, very lovely. We apologize for startling you."

"Very sorry," Shizuka added sincerely, twirling the stick of the sucker between her hands.

Seated now with unfamiliar company she found it hard to concentrate on the musicians or their playing. Her eyes were forward, but she wasn't really listening to them anymore. No, she was far more aware of the two relative strangers now seated beside her and the expectation of conversation. It wasn't that she didn't like having pleasant conversations, it was just that she wasn't well practiced in starting them.

She was saved from the awkward silence by introductions. Turning a little more, she faced them both more fully, a polite smile resting on her lips. After he'd sated his name she followed the gesture of his hand down to his sister, and she couldn't help the grin that followed her comment about her hair.

"Thank you, I like yours as well." She extended a hand as if to touch the younger sister's hair, but let it fall away, unsure if she really should. She'd had issues in the past with having touched when apparently she ought not to have.

"I'm Xia Shin-Mu, and it's nice to meet you too." She actually thought of a question without prompt. "Do you go to the academy too?
PostPosted: Wed Jun 30, 2010 1:50 pm

Shizuka swelled with pride, and before Yuudai could respond, she nodded fervently. "He does. Yuudai goes to the academy, and he's going to fight bravely to protect everyone." She didn't mention for which side, but only because she'd been firmly instructed not to flaunt her brother's allegiance in mixed company. The results could be disastrous, after all, and the last thing she wanted was to cause trouble for her brother.

Yuudai cast an amused look down to his sister, then lifted his shoulders in a faint shrug. "I am a student, yes. Thank you, Shizuka."

He studied Shin-Mu a moment, wondering why he hadn't noticed her in any of his classes. It was likely he simply hadn't been paying attention; though friendly enough on an individual basis, he rarely went out of his way to initiate conversation. Often he was busy or simply lost in his thoughts, and it didn't occur to him to make friends.

After all, who knew if the people at the academy would be his friend or foe the next time they met?

"I don't believe we've met before. Perhaps we don't share any classes."

She'd been looking to Yuudai for the answer, but dropped her gaze quickly to the youngster sitting between them as she pipped up. Shin found herself a little startled by it, but she smiled all the same. She had no siblings of her own, had no experience with interacting with small children. It was.. odd, but not unpleasant. She found the antics of the child most endearing, and found that in itself surprising. She'd always assumed she wouldn't get on well with younger lunarians.

It wasn't odd that she'd never noticed him at the academy, she seldom noticed anyone that she hadn't met out side of class at least once. Partially she was just too focused on her work, and partially due to her own lack of social skills. She avoided contact while at the academy when she could, and only sought out the company of a very select few.

"Perhaps not, or we simply have better things to pay mind to the the backs of our classmate's heads." Her words could sometimes be blunt, even harsh, but her tone was still soft and sincerely friendly. "In any case, it's nice to meet you." Her gaze dipped to Shizuka. "You as well. Are you enjoying the music?"

The musicians were switching to a new song, one that Yuudai found more pleasant than the last. He began to tap his foot in time to it, and though he didn't smile, the edges of his mouth eased a bit in their severity. He had a good, but untrained, singing voice, and had he been a bit better, he might have joined in when the music allowed. He did not, however, want to be sitting on a bench belting out lines to a song while his little sister was attempting conversation with a lady.

"It's a pleasure," he said, and when Shizuka sought his hand, he curled his larger one loosely around it.

"Yes, very much." Shizuka beamed up at Shin-mu, wiggling a little closer to the other female now that she had the security of her brother's hand. They still weren't touching, but it was obvious she was here for conversation with her, and not her brother. "Music is lovely. Sometimes Yuu sings me to sleep, or he sings when he does dishes or cleans."

Yuudai wasn't embarrassed, but he glanced over and gave his little sister a mildly reproving look. "Anything else you'd like to tell her?" he asked, dryly.

Shizuka considered it, an impish smile on her face, and added, "His favorite color is blue. What about you?"

As the musicians finished their song the darker lunarian shifted, hands lifting slightly as if she meant to applaud, but in the end she simply replaced them on her lap, thumbs smoothing along the tops of her thighs. She'd have applauded, impressed and pleased by the music, but had thought better of it when no others seemed willing or inspired to clap. Not long ago she'd have simply brought her hands together without thought and regretted it after when her applause alone brought every eye in her direction. She knew better now.

A flicker of a smile graced pale glossed lips as she watched Yuudai take his sister's hand. It was obvious that he cared very much for her. Shizuka wiggling closer to her was unexpected, but again, she didn't mind. It was surprisingly easy to talk with her. "Oh is that so? Does he sing very well then?"

She flicked her gaze up to glance at him, catching that reproving look towards the smaller girl, and had a stifle a very soft laugh. "I'm a musician myself. The dizi is my instrument of choice." She pursed her lips, and added as an after thought, "My favorite color is pale green."

He was not a modest man, in that he would promptly and honestly recite his own strong points, but he was also not a braggart. Yuudai didn't claim skills that he didn't own, mostly because he found that sort of thing to be a waste of his time -- he would have to work harder to become good at something that he'd already claimed came easily when he could simply play to his strengths in the first place. He was a busy man on a good day, and wasting time like that was hardly an activity he wanted to engage in.

"I am tolerable," he said, which wasn't generous and it wasn't modest. "I never trained my voice professionally, but I often sang lullabies to my sisters, so there was a lot of practice, anyhow."

The youngest Koga girl seemed pleased by her answer, and she confided, "I like purple the best, but green is pretty, too. I think purple and green are nice together, like on flowers."

Then, a mischievous smile on her lips, she added, "Yuudai presses flowers! He makes very pretty things. You should come by the inn and see them."

Yuudai offered his sister a bland look. "I've never known her to be a walking advertisement before. My apologies."

Defensively, Shizuka said, "I like her!" and then flushed a little, adding, "She seems nice."

Shin-Mu offered Yuu a smile that was half apologetic and half just friendly. It seemed to her that the younger girl between them might be over sharing, much to her brother's chagrin. "I would imagine you have a very soothing voice then, to be able to lull your sisters into sleep." She remembered vaguely the lullabies Rong had sung to her as a small child, and the elderly spirit had had a very calming voice.

Shizuka of course held the reins of their conversation, and it was to her Shin looked next. "I like purple as well, and agree with you. They are a very lovely combination on flowers. She smoothed a hand over the opposite forearm, simply occupying the habitual need to mess with things.

Pale brows rose in response to the declaration of Yuudai's hobby, and she glanced up to him. If flower pressing was an odd habit for a young man then that was news to Shin-Mu. Frankly she was unaware of the gender biases for many things, having never really payed attention to such things in the past. "No need to apologize. Do you have a collection of your work? I'm sure it's very pretty." Her tone was devoid teasing, carrying instead simple honest curiosity.

Shizuka earned a brilliant little grin from Shin. "Thank you. You both seem very nice as well."
PostPosted: Mon Aug 09, 2010 6:45 pm

Deciding for the time being that he was merely a means to an end, Yuudai sighed and leaned back a little, allowing Shizuka to take the reigns of the conversation. Truth be told, had it been any of his other sisters he would have been irritated with them for being so forthcoming with information about him, but this was Shizuka. She was the baby of the family, and more importantly, she was Yuudai's favorite sister; his constant companion, the person who looked up to him the most. It led to him having a gentler hand with her, though he told himself that was partially due to the fact that she rarely required scolding.

Shizuka was a good girl, much more like Masami than she was either Junko or Natsuko. Of course, she wasn't old enough to be troubling him by running around after boys, but that day would come.

He was not looking forward to that day. In fact, he was already preparing himself mentally for it, because he would be much, much worse than their father when it came time to inspecting possible suitors for Shizuka.

Drawn back into the present by a question, Yuudai blinked and folded his hands in his lap. "I do. I sell greeting cards and the like at the inn. You're welcome to stop by whenever you like."

Between them, Shizuka said chirpily, "I'd like it if you did."

Sea green eyes flicked from one to the other for a quiet moment before Yuudai spoke up on answer to her question. Brows arching in soft surprise. "You must do extraordinary work, surely, to be able to sell it." Shad no such skills in crafting, though she could admit to herself that she had never really applied her obvious dexterity to anything beyond her music or puzzles. It made her wonder if perhaps she had skills she had not yet tapped.

The invitation to their family inn made her smile, and she dipped her head in appreciation. " A very kind invitation that I will certainly have to take you both up on." She wasn't often invited places, so it was something of a treat for her.

"Oh Shizuka, for you, anything." For the child alone she would have walked clear across the city, the both of them was really an unfair advantage. The charming young man, and his too cute, endearing sister.

"Where is the Inn?" Well if she was going to come visit, she would have to know it's location.
